    • After the deaths of both his parents, Richard lost his 2 brothers in the Civil War; 17 year old William was killed at Chester Station during the Seven Days Battle, and 21 year old James died of wounds suffered at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.

      Living with his sister Sally, they moved to Memphis and Mississippi. He returned to Pittsylvania County and managed a general store at Weal and then married. He ran the store for about a year after his marriage then farmed with his father in law. Marriage performed by William Motley.
