| Calvin Moore Confederate Service Record (18) Calvin enlisted 23 Apr 1861 as a Private in the Danville Grays, Company B, 18th Virginia Infantry. He was wounded twice in battle; first at Seven Pines on 1 June 1862, and again at Sharpsburg(Antietam). on 14 Sept 1862. He was discharged as a Sergeant on 24 June 1863.
|
| Danville Business Records (60) During the Civil War George stayed in Danville and ran the family livery business. Calvin returned home in June 1863. They did quite a lot of business with the Confederate Army; trading and boarding horses, running a stage line, selling firewood & fodder, etc. |
| 18th Virginia Infantry Regiment (5) The 18th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in May, 1861. Its members were recruited at Danville and Farmville, and in the counties of Nottoway, Cumberland, Prince Edward, Appomattox, Pittsylvania, and Charlotte. The unit fought at First Manassas under General Cocke, then was assigned to General Pickett's, Garnett's, and Hunton's Brigade. It participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from Williamsburg to Gettysburg except when it was detached to Suffolk with Longstreet. Later it served in North Carolina, returned to Virginia, and took an active part in the battles of Drewry's Bluff and Cold Harbor. The 18th endured the hardships of the Petersburg trenches north of the James River and saw action around Appomattox. It lost 6 killed and 13 wounded at First Manassas and in April, 1862, had 700 men fit for duty. The unit reported 206 casualties during the Seven Days' Battles, and of the 120 engaged in the Maryland Campaign, thirty-six percent of the 312 in action were killed, wounded, or missing. Many were captured at Sayler's Creek and only 2 officers and 32 men surrendered. The field officers were Colonels Henry A. Carrington and Robert E. Withers, Lieutenant Colonel George C. Cabell, and Major Edwin G. Wall. |

Notes |
- Brothers George and Calvin Moore appear to have run most of the family livery business during the Civil War. In the early part of the war George and Thornton stayed in Danville. Calvin came home from the war in June 1863. Both George and Calvin conducted extensive transactions related to the business. Calvin appears to have worked mainly as a stage driver, while George traded, boarded, and rented horses. He owned a number of wagons, carriages, and buggies as well. Since they were in Danville, a good amount of livery and stage business was conducted with the Confederate Army. Surviving Confederate invoices are either signed by or refer to Major William T Sutherlin, the Army's Quartermaster in Danville during the war. After the fall of Richmond the government relocated to Danville. Sutherlin opened his home to Davis and his cabinet during the week which led to Appomattox. Danville became known as the Last Capital of the Confederacy.
The entire family, including 7 brothers and their families, worked the livery as of the 1860 census. 5 of the 7 brothers enlisted in the 18th Virginia Infantry Regiment on April 23, 1861.
Pittsylvania County Wills vol. 3 p. 74
Will recorded 9-18-1871.
Buried in Danville at Greenhill Cemetery.
