Notes |
- Birth: Sep. 18, 1797 Virginia, USA
Death: 1828 Colbert County Alabama, USA
Sally's last name was definitely Toney and not Taney. When she married Silas she used the alias Young and some think that that meant that she was a widow. But she was only 17 so too young to have been married, widowed and then ready to remarry. No trace of a previous marriage for her or of a Mr Young. The fact is that she and Silas were first cousins (their mother were Bondurant sisters from Bedford, Virginia) she probably used the name Young to avoid the prohibition of cousins marrying.
Sally was the oldest child of Charles Toney Sr and his 2nd wife Zelpha Bondurant. They married 20 Dec 1796 in Bedford Co, Virginia. Sally and all of her siblings except Amelia were born in Virginia before the family moved to the Mississippi Territory, later Colbert Co, Alabama) Siblings were Caleb Toney 1799 VA –1847 Al, Edmund Toney 1805 Va–1877 Al, Lucinda Toney 1806 Va– ?.
Sally married Silas Fuqua in Madison, Mississippi territory on May 25, 1814 and had children Elizabeth "Eliza" Fuqua Al-Tx 1815–1842, Harriet Fuqua Al-Tx 1817–1834, Galba Fuqua Al-Tx 1819–1836, Caroline Fuqua Al 1821–1824, Lucas Fuqua Al-Tx-Al 1822–1848, Fabius Fuqua Al-Tx 1824–1897, Sabrina "Sat or Satira" Fuqua Al-Tx 1825–1867 before her death in about 1824 to 1828.
In 1828 Silas along with his brothers Benjamin and Ephraim and the remaining children (except Sabrina) moved to Stephen Austin's colony in Texas. In about 1830 they moved from there to the DeWill colony in Gonzales County.
Silas died in 1834 and family history says that Benjamin and Galba were treated like members of the family by Col John King and his wife. Benjamin Fuqua married Nancy King in 1834 and 1835 was one of "The Old Eighteen of Texas" who fought with the Mexican Army to retain a small cannon that had been given them by Mexico to repel Indians at the Battles of Gonzales. Benjamin died in Jan 1836. In early March 1836, the call went out for volunteers to man The Alamo against the expected invasion of Mexican General Santa-Ana. 17 year old Galba Fuqua volunteered as did Col John King. However a member of his family was sick at the time so his 15 year old son William King offered to go in his place. They road to the Alamo on 1 march 1836 and were both killed there on March 6, 1836. They were the two youngest men to die there.
