  There is a family tradition among the descendants of Edmond Fitzgerald 1745 (who married Millicent Payne) that Edmond was born on the "high seas” and it is presumed that John, Sr., Matthew, Christopher, and Garrett Fitzgerald of Pittsylvania and Halifax Cos, Va are brothers or close relatives of Edmond. It is possible this group of Fitzgerald’s descended from Garrett Fitzgerald, Sr. first mentioned in Rappahannock Co records (later Essex and Richmond Cos.) as early as the 1680s. In the family records for Edmund, born 1745, at sea, it mentions that he was from the House of Lord Edward Fitzgerald. And that the family migrated to this country due to oppression. That history mentions that they first came to New York, then went to VA, settling near the Peaks of Otter in Bedford County VA, then went to Pittsylvania County VA, settling on the Bannister River there.
