- The Last Will and Testament of William Mathews 1684
This Will and Testament is on file in the New Haven Court Record.
"The last will and Testament of William Mathews" Dated 14 April 1684. Being weak of body, but sound in perfect understanding and memory, I do give my soul to God in Jesus Christ, and my body to a Christian burial. My will is concerning the disposal of my estate:.
"Firstly: That my son Caleb shall have my dwelling house and home lot, paying back to ye others of my children so much as it shall be found more than his share".
"Secondly:, Concerning the rest of my goods that shall be left when my debts are paid, equally devided between the other three children".
"Thirdly:, My sons Thomas and William--, Thomas to live with Thomas Goodsell, untill he is eighteen years old, if the executors see cause, and the boy is used well, and son William to be left with Hoadley (William) Sr., Eleaser Stone, and John Frisbee.* To be placed out by these friends that I do have as my executors till he (William) shall be of age, as witness my hand (see the letter "N" as his sign) between the name William (N) Mathews this fourteenth day of April 1684".
Probated April 19, 1684
