  Elliot was one of nine children born to William H. Oakes and his wife, Elizabeth (Elliot). Elliot married Sarah Ann (Kellam) on December 27, 1797, in Guilford Co, NC. Their 7 children, all born in Guilford Co, NC: (1) Ann, b. about 1798; in 1838 Ann still unmarried, living in Guilford Co, NC (2) James Washington, b. 01/10/1800 #15650946 (3) John B., b. 06/20/1801 #68861380 (4) William I., b. about 1802 (5) Isaac H., b. 03/06/1806 #34662854 (6) Sarah, b. 1811 #68862434 (7) Elliot H., b. about 1816 #64076383 Elliot appeared on the 1815 tax list in Guilford Co, NC, with 100 acres of land and living next to the John P. Kellam family (his in-laws); his estate was settled in 1819. Carl Oakes feels Elliot died in 1817 because Sarah was granted an adminstratix bond in Guilford Co, on Nov. 18, 1817, which was probably not long after he died. Joel Estes was appointed guardian of Elliot's children in a June, 1819, Pittsylvania Co, Va, court session. Deed Book #43, page 14, dated 10/01/1838: "Ann, James, William, Isaac, John, Sarah, & Elliot H., all heirs of of Elliot Oakes, deceased, make a deed to Richard Corum for land for $70.00. The land (35 acres) is from their grandfather, William Oakes, deceased."*Ann Oakes & Elliot H. Oakes signed the deed with a mark "X", which means they could not write.
