| George Ehrhard Beer This framed miniature portrait of George Beer was kept by his wife, Julia, after his death. With frame it measures about 4.5" by 4". This type of remembrance disappeared with the growth of photography. Perhaps the lack of a photo of George is why she had one made of her daughters at the death of her husband. http://jemgen.com/TNGV7/showmedia.php?mediaID=337 |

| Bremerhaven ex Rochester The US ship ROCHESTER was built at Bath, Maine, by Levi Houghton in 1837. 563 tons; 131 ft 2 in x 30 ft 10 in x 15 ft 5 in (length x beam x depth of hold). In 1850, the ROCHESTER was purchased by a Bremen shipowner, LF Kalmann, and renamed BREMERHAVEN. In 1865, during the dispute over Schleiswig-Holstein, the BREMERHAVEN was re-registered under the neutral Russian flag. In 1870, the BREMERHAVEN ex ROCHESTER was sold to a Norwegian firm. Its last recorded voyage was from London to New York in 1877.

Notes |
- George emigrated from Bavaria in 1853 with Ernst Kern. It appears they came together on the ship, and went into the mercantile business together in Manitowoc. They may have been boyhood friends. They married sisters and had families in Manitowoc, George dying in 1864 at age 43, and Ernst in 1876 at age 48.

DIED
In this village on the 26 of Oct., 1864(sic), Mr. George Beers(sic), aged 42 years. The large concourse of people which followed the remains of Mr. Beers to the grave, was ample testimony of the esteem in which our citizens hold him. As a businessman, he was honest and upright and as a neighbor and friend, he was kind and amiable. An eloquent tribute was paid him at the grave by Adolph Wittmann, Esq., in a feeling address, which touched the hearts of all his hearers.
