    Notes:

    William was born ca 1698, probably in Sweden. He was brought to America by his parents at about the age of seven and was raised in New Castle County, Delaware. He married Magdalena Petersson, daughter of Peter and Karin Petersson, at Holy Trininity Church in New Castle County, Delaware on April 21, 1720. The Peterssons were a Swedish family. The last record of the William Vardaman family in Delaware is the baptism of a daughter in 1724. William next appears in the Rockfish Gap area on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains in what is now Albemarle County, VA, but was then in Goochland County in 1734. By 1744 he has moved a little further south to the Peaks of Otter area of the Blue Ridge Mountains in what is now Bedford County, VA. In 1744 this area was in Brunswick County and later, in 1746, in Lunenburg County. Bedford County was created out of Lunenburg in 1754. In 1766 William with his second (or possibly third) wife and youngest son, James, relocated to the Dutch Fork area of what is now Newberry County, South Carolina, but was then in Craven County and later included in the judicial division known as Ninety Six District. William purchased 150 acres on the south side of the Enoree River on Indian Creek on 13 Dec 1766. The deed refers to William as a merchant. William died ca 1789 in Newberry County naming his wife Bridgit and four sons John, William, Jr., Peter and James, in order in his will. The first three were probably f from his first wife, Magdalena Petersson, while the last son, James, was probably with his last wife, Bridgit Tinkler. Based on details included in the various biographies of his grandson, Rev. Jeremiah Vardeman of Kentucky and Missouri, William raised a very large family. Since there were only 4 sons, there are likely several daughters. Unfortunately, we know the names of only two: Maria and Jemima. While it can't be proven, there is likely another daughter named Frances who married Peter Bennett. Beyond this we are unable to conjecture with any degree of confidence on the names of any additional daughters.

Between William Bennet Senr of the County of Pittsylvania of the one part and Reubin Bennett a grandson of the said William Bennet and a son of Peter Bennett of the other part. Witnesseth that the said William Bennett for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which he hath for the said Reubin Bennett hath given and granted and by these presents doth give grand and confirm unto hihim the said Reubin Bennett his heirs and assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred and ninety four acres (be the same more or less) being the lower part of a parcel of two hundred and sixty four acres conveyed to the said William Bennett senr by the Executors of Richard Randolph Gents of Henrico deceased situate in Pittsylvania County on the south side of Staunton River and bounded as followeth Viz.     Micajah Bennett married Ann Johnson on June 27, 1811 in Wilkes County. The same day Salley Evans married Weaver Cotton in Wilkes County.Salley Evans is listed as a widow and given one draw in the 1803 and 1806 land lottery. Micajah Bennett of Jackson County, GA left a will dated 8 Apr 1824 naming Salley Cotton as a beneficiary. Apparently, Salley is the daughter of Micajah Bennett. These records show that Micajah Bennett migrated from Wilkes Co., GA to Jackson Co., GA sometime between 1811 and 1824.

    P 50-51: Micajah Bennett. Will dated April 8, 1824, probated July 5,1824, recorded Will Book A, pp. 103-104. 'In the name of the Holy Trinity Amen. I Micajah Bennett ? being indisposed in Body ? I give & bequeath to my two Sons Jesse I. Bennett & Jeptha Bennett, the Tract ofLand whereon I now live, including the Plantation & farming utentials, two Horses, one yolk of oxen & cart, a cow & calf a peace, all my Stock of Hogs, two feather Beds & furniture, all my Household & kitchenfurnniture except two other feather Beds & furniture to be disposed ofas hereafter directed together with the services of my Negroe man Spencer, & my Negroe woman Jude, during the time of their (my Sons aforesaid) minority; with this request, & it is my will that after the expiration of the age of minority, my, the said Negroe woman Jude, shall beset free under such regulations as the Laws of the State do or may authorize, but that Spencer shall remain the property of my sons aforesaid.'

    The division of the real estate of Richard Bennett can be seen in the Pittsylvania County Land Tax List. Richard Bennett appears in the list through 1840. In 1841, Richard is absent. The land tax list shows nine properties in 1841 which the new owners received from Richard Bennett deceased. It appears that Richard Bennett died in 1840. Examination of each of these properties helps us determine the heirs of Richard Bennett.
