| Anund's Mound in Västerås Anundshög (also Anundshögen and Anunds hög) is a tumulus near Västerås in Västmanland, the largest in Sweden. It has a diameter of 60 metres (200 ft) and is about 9 metres (30 ft) high.
Assessments of the era of the mound vary between the Bronze Age and the late Iron Age. A fireplace under it has been dated by radiocarbon dating to sometime between AD 210 and 540.
Some historians have associated the mound with the legendary King Anund, while others regard this as speculative. It is purported also that the name is taken from the large runestone at the site, (Vs 13) the central stone in a row of 15 alongside the mound, re-erected in the 1960s and apparently marking out the route of the Eriksgata. The inscription on the runestone reads:
+ fulkuiþr + raisti + stainn + þasi + ala + at + sun + + sin + hiþin + bruþur + anutaʀ + uraiþr hik + runaʀ
"Folkvid raised all of these stones after his son Heden, Anund's brother. Vred carved the runes."
At the foot of the mound are 2 large stone ships placed end to end, 51 metres (167 ft) and 54 metres (177 ft) long. The site was a thing-place and the ship settings may be associated with this function. |

Provenance Brig. Gen. Lewis Addison Armistead carried this sword and scabbard during the war. He used it when he was leading his brigade as part of Pickett's Charge. Upon leaping the stone wall near the colors of the 72nd Pennsylvania, Armistead fell mortally wounded. Sgt. Michael Specht, of Co. K, 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry, picked up the sword with scabbard and kept them until he, with the 72nd Pennsyvlania Infantry, gave them to the 56th Virginia Infantry (Capt. Thomas D. Jeffress as commander) at the "Reunion of the Blue and Gray" at Gettysburg on September 15, 1906 on the spot where Armistead fell. The 56th Virginia gave the sword and scabbard to the Museum with the statement that Armistead's heirs had claim to the items. Armistead's grandsons laid claim but donated the sword and scabbard fully in 1907.

| Give Them Cold Steel Boys! By Don Troiani Pickett's Charge was a bloodbath. While the Union suffered 1,500 casualties, the Confederates had over 6,000. Over 50% of the men sent across the fields were killed or wounded. Pickett's division alone, out of about 5,500 men, lost 224 killed, 1,140 wounded, and 1,499 missing/captured. Pickett's three brigade commanders and all thirteen of his regimental commanders were casualties. Kemper was wounded, Garnett killed, and Armistead mortally wounded.
Abram Fackler was at Gettysburg with Company I of the 53rd Virginia Infantry Regiment, "The Chatham Greys" of General Lou Armistead's Brigade of Pickett's Division. The sergeant of Company I was Sgt. Robert Tyler Jones, the grandson of former president James Tyler. Seventy-five yards from the stone wall at Gettysburg General Louis Armistead screamed over the sounds of battle to Colonel Rawley W. Martin and said "colonel, we can not stay here" Colonel "Billy Martin screamed back "then sir, we must go foreward. The Don Troiani painting of the battle of Gettysburg is an accurate depiction showing General Armistead leading his men to the stone wall with his hat on the tip of his sword, look close and behind him you will see the fluttering battle flags of the 53rd and 57th Virginia. For a few brief seconds in history, The "Chatham Greys" held the stone wall... and Sgt Robert Tyler Jones fell, Colonel Whitehead fell, Colonel R.W. "Billy" Martin fell with a shattered leg, General Louis Armistead was mortally wounded by the cannon.... and our boys grudgingly retreated. |
