    Elizabeth Bondurant, formerly Elizabeth Waid, in Campbell Co., VA, 12 Nov. 1828 petitioned the U.S. government and stated that she had never received Revolutionary Bounty Land in right of her father Jacob Waid. Capt. George Lambert, 29 Nov. 1829 in Bedford Co., stated that he had commanded a company of the 14th Regiment, Virginia Continental Line, and Jacob Wade enlisted in it in Dec. 1777 as a Private. Jacob died 1821 in Bedford county. Elizabeth Bondurant of Bedford Co VA on 4 June 1830 again asked for Bounty Land “in the name of her ancestor Jacob Waid.” She was the wife of Ephraim Bondurant.

    Notes:

    On 12 February 1777 Isaac and Jacob Wade enrolled for one year in Captain George Lambert's Company of the 14th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line, under the command of Colonel Charles Lewis. They fought in battles at Brandywine and Germantown in Pennsylvania. Later, Isaac Wade enlisted in the Bedford County, Virginia, militia, which was called-up in August 1781 to go to Little York for the planned battle with Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. There he witnessed the surrender of the British to generals Washington and Lafayette. He was discharged from the militia on the battlefield, immediately after the victory in October 1781.     JACOB WADE, “LATE SOLDIER OF THE CONTINENTAL LINE”

    Bedford Co., VA, Court Order Book 22, 1828-1829, p. 203, recorded information that Elizabeth Wade who died before 1877, “was the daughter and only heir of Jacob Wade late soldier of the Continental Line” in the American Revolution. Elizabeth was the wife of EPHRAIM BONDURANT (abt. 1790 - 1877) of Bedford Co., VA. Ephraim is believed to be one of the children of John Bondurant and Martha ? who moved from Buckingham Co. to Bedford Co., VA, about the time of the Revolution. This John may have been the baby son of John and Sarah R. Taylor Bondurant, who was baptized in King William Parish in 1737, Goochland Co., VA. The Bedford Co. document would qualify descendants of Elizabeth and Ephraim for membership in SAR or DAR, based on Jacob Wade’s service.

    Jacob Wade served as a soldier with his twin brother Isaac in Capt. George Lambert's Co. by enlistment. Capt. Lambert's Co. was in the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment in the 14th Regt. commanded by Col. Charles Lewis. They enlisted in the spring of 1777 for the term of three years, and were honorably discharged.

    Above is contained in a letter by Capt. Ceorge Lambert in the Virginia State Libarary at Richmond, Va.

    Jacob Wade was at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. He was also in the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown.

    Jacob and wife Ann lived on a large farm located on the branches of the Great Otter River, Wolf Creek, Fiddler's Creek and Little Otter. Part of this farm was between the Big and Little Otter. Their daughter married William Carter and William and Mary lived on a farm adjacent to Mary's parents. Following the death of Mary's mother, Jacob Wade remarried and a few years after he died, William and Mary Carter migrated to Ohio and settle in Logan County near Rushylvania.



    Jacob enlisted and served along with his brother, Isaac in 1777 at Bedford, Virginia. The served under Col Charles Lewis 14th Regiment, Capt. George Lambert's Company. Jacob was pensioned in 15 Apr 1818. Both men were at the surrender of Cornwallis and participated in the Battles of Brandywine and Georgetown.

    John Peter Bondurant [Sr.] was born circa 1710 in King William Parish, Goochland Co., Virginia., He married Sarah Rachael Moseley about 1729 or 1736. John died circa 1774 in Buckingham Co., Virginia.

    John Peter Bondurant was listed as a vestryman in King William Parish in 1748. He is first mentioned in his father's will in 1734. John and his wife Sarah lived in Goochland County, Virginia, and later in Cumberland County. He deeded 200 acres of land to his son, John Peter III of Albemarle County, on 9 March 1758.

    Sarah was the widow of Robert L Moseley. The Bondurant Family Association Newsletter reprinting information from The Huguenot Magazine, Vol 25, page 173 gives the marriage date as 1836 but indicates date and place not proved.

    Grinnell, in his manuscript, indicates that John died in Manakin in 1744. A pedigree chart in The Huguenot, Publication No. 30, submitted by Mary V Bondurant Epling, indicates that John died about 1744 in Buckingham County, but before 1776, and that his death was recorded in Powhatten County. A GEDCOM received from Ruby Talley Smith indicated he died in 1774.

    This indenture made this eleventh day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty BETWEEN Jeremiah Wade of Cumberland County, Pierce Wade and Thomas Cothon of Albemarle County Executors of Joseph Ballenger Decd of the one part and John Britt of Goochland County of the other part.

    Witnesseth that the said Jermiah Wade, Pearce Wade and Thomas Cothon for and in consideration of Sixty pound of lawfull money of Virginia by him the said John Britt to them the said Jeremiah Wade, Pearce Wade and Thomas Cothon in hand paid before the sealing and delivery hereof the receipt whereof they the said Jeremiah Wade, Pearce Wade and Thomas Cothon doth hereby acknowledge and thereof doth acquit and discharge the said John Britt his heirs executors and administrators hath granted bargained sold ens?? and confirmed and by these presents doth grant bargain sell enf?? and confirm unto the said John Britt his heirs or assigns all that Massuage Plantation and tract of land whereon the said John Britt now dwelleth situate which said land is lying and being in Goochland County on the Byrd Creek containing by estimation one hundred and twenty eight acres be the same more or less and being bounded as followeth to witt/BEGINNING at the corner at the Byrd thence on John Hadens line to a corner on Bryan Connelys line thence on the said Connelys lines and Arthur Hopkins line to the Bryd and thence down the Bryd according to its meander to the place begun at which said tract of parcel of land was left by the aforesaid Joseph ballenger, Deceased to be sold by his aforesaid executors as may apear by the records of the County Court of Goochland and the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders Rents Issues and profits thereof with the appurtances.     James George, William Britt and John Faris proved this deed with the livery of seizin and receipt endorsed to be the acts and deeds of Jeremiah and Pearce Wade which were ordered to be recorded.

    KNOW all men by these present that we, Jeremiah Wade of Cumberland County and Pearce Wade of Albemarle County at held and firmly bound unto John Britt of Goochland County in the sum of four hundred pounds of Lawfull money of Virginia to be paid unto the said John Britt his heirs Executors and Admrs to them which payment well and truly to be made, be bind ourselves our heirs Execrs and Admrs firmly by these presents, Sealed with our seals and dated this 24th day of February in the year of our lord 1749.

    Charity Ballenger & Jeremiah Wade
    Jeremiah, born c. 1710, was probably the brother of Pearce Wade, who married Charity's sister Mary Ballenger. Their father may have been Robert Wade of Hanover County, VA, and Robert in turn may have been the brother of Charity Wade Ballenger, mother of both girls.
    c. 1723: Charity Ballenger was born in New Jersey.
    Jeremiah and Charity were already married before Joseph Ballenger made his will on 5 Jun 1744.
    21 May 1745: Jeremiah purchased 150 acres on Great Byrd Creek in Goochland County from John and Sarah Denny for £45. The parcel adjoined John Martin, John Hinson, Ebenezer Adams, deceased, and John Denny. The witnesses were Pearce Wade, James George, and Joseph Pare.[1]
    20 Dec 1748: Jeremiah and Charity Wade sold 150 acres on Byrd Creek to John Faris for £45. The adjoining landowners were Richard Adams, John Hinson, and Colonel John Martin. Witnesses: John Mosely Junior, William Robards, and Benjamin Denny.[2]
    26 Dec 1748: Jeremiah bought 197 acres on Old Johns Creek in Goochland from Charles and Tabitha Rayley for £70. It was bounded Stephen Hughes, Daniel Stoner, William Runnals, and John Rayley. Witnesses: Robert Hughes, Tucker Woodson, Robert Hughes Junior, and R. Walton.[3]
    24 Feb 1749: Along with Pearce Wade, Jeremiah Wade of "Cumberland County" was security on a bond of £400 for John Britt of Goochland County as executor for John Britt, deceased.[4] Cumberland County was formed from Goochland that year.
    11 Apr 1750: As co-executors of the estate of Joseph Ballenger, Jeremiah Wade of Cumberland County and Pearce Wade and Thomas Cothon [Cawthon] of Albemarle County sold 128 acres on Byrd Creek in Goochland County to John Britt for £60. The parcel was adjoined by John Haden, Bryan Connely, and Arthur Hopkins. The sale was witnessed by James George, William Britt, and John Faris.[5] John Britt was apparently already living on the acreage.
    12 Jul 1751: Jeremiah Wade, planter, purchased 180 acres on Thrasher's Creek in Albemarle County from Howard Cash, planter. Witnesses: David Wade, Michael Smith, and Chisley Daniel.[6]
    2 Apr 1752: Jeremiah sold land adjoining Pearce Wade to David Wade. Witnesses: Pearce Wade, James George, and Christly Daniel.[7]
    2 Jul 1752: Jeremiah sold the parcel bought from Charles Rayley to David Siser. The land was now in Cumberland County, while Jeremiah was described as being of Albemarle County. Witnesses: Tarleton Woodson Junior, Ben Watkins Junior, Stephen Tampton Junior, Drury Woodson, and Thomas Pleasants.[8]
    2 Jul 1763: Along with Pearce Wade and Richard and Joseph Ballenger, Jeremiah sold 800 acres, part of a grant of 2,000 acres, on the south side of the Buffalo River under the Tobacco Mountains in Amherst County, VA to George Seaton.[9] Originally granted to Richard and Joseph, 400 acres each had been granted by them to Jeremiah and Pearce.
    20 Aug 1768: Jeremiah sold 114 acres on the top of Smith's Mountain adjoining Joseph Ballenger and William Cabell to Joseph Ballinger for £10. On the same day, he sold 378 acres on the headwaters of Thrasher's and Franklin Creeks to John Parks. This second conveyance was witnessed by Matthew Tucker, Drury Tucker, and Joseph Ballenger.[10] Jeremiah was described as being of St. Ann's Parish.
    According to William Scroggins, Jeremiah sold three slaves to Hector McAllister, but the date wasn't available to him. He also reports that, along with Neil Campbell "and others", he sold 400 acres on Rockfish Creek to George Donald and Company.[11] Could the latter have been a trust deed? Neil Campbell's mistress, Tabitha Ballowe later married Joseph Ballenger.
    17 Feb 1772: Jeremiah Wade Senior sold 378 acres in the fork of the James River adjoining Matthew Tucker, Drury Tucker and Lacy Sine in Albemarle to Richard Bennett.[12]
    8 Jul 1772: Jeremiah made his will in Bedford County, VA, naming executors Richard Ballenger and James and Nathan Hilton. In it, he left his estate was to be equally divided among his children, but he made no mention of a wife, thus Charity must have predeceased him. Witnesses: Abraham Ervine, Jesse Hilton, and Elizabeth Mitchell. It was proved 28 Sep 1772, with Guy Smith serving as security for James Hilton. Executor Hilton made his inventory and appraisal on 10 Oct 1772.[13] Jesse Hilton had been surety for the marriage daughter Mary Ballenger Wade to Whitehead Ryan.

    Jean Pierre Bondurant was born on 18 July 1677 in Génolhac, Gard, France. He married Ann Tanner, daughter of Edward Tanner [Sr.] and Mary Hatcher, circa 1708 in Manakin Town, Virginia. Jean died before 25 January 1734/35 in Manakin Town, Virginia. Jean was also known as John Peter. He was first baptised a Huguenot, then at the age of seven rebaptised Catholic in order to preserve his right to inherit family property. With the Revocation both of his parents, and his grandfather and step-grandmother renounced their Huguenot faith and were "newly converted" Catholics.

    Jean Pierre was orphaned in 1695 and left in the guardianship of his cousin, Andre Bondurant, who was an apothecary and also the mayor of Génolhac. In September 1697, with Andre's consent, Jean Pierre's property, the mills at l'Aribal and Calquières inherited from his parents, were sold. Jean Pierre left France and arrived in Aarau, Switzerland in February 1697/98 where he joined his maternal uncle, Guillaume Barjon, Pastor of the Huguenot refugee Church there. On October 3, 1697, Jean Pierre recanted the Catholic faith and became a Huguenot again.

    The following is recorded in the congregational record:
    The 3rd of October 1697, Seigneur Jean Pierre Bondurant, apothecary, presented himself in front of us, claiming that he was extremely affected by the fault he committed in his youth, which was to attend the worship of the Roman [Catholic] Church; showing his repentance by asking God to forgive this sin and after he claimed that he would live and die in our Holy Religion, he was admitted into the peace of the Church and to participate in the Holy Sacraments.

    Because Jean Pierre had left France with money from the sale of his mills, he did not appear on the Swiss charity records as did the Barjons and most refugee Huguenots. Being financially independent also shielded him from scrutiny and perhaps enabled him to buy his first land when he later went to Virginia. He was listed as a "fugitive from the Kingdom because of religion" in 1712. This late date is not significant, as such listings were normallly late; and his father's cousin was Consul General in charge of the listings.

    In 1699, in the company of Pastor Barjon and other refugees, he went to Karlshafen, Germany. There is no record of his travel from Karlshafen to England, but he was among Huguenot refugees arriving at the mouth of the James River in Virginia on 20 September 1700 aboard the ship Ye Peter and Anthony which had sailed from England. This was the "second transport" of Huguenots from London. The immigrants were taken up the James River in smaller boats as far as the shoals (present day Richmond). They went overland to Manakin Town, where they joined the "first transport" settlers who had occupied a deserted Monacan Indian village near Fine Creek the previous year. Jean stayed with the colony until 1701 and then, as a single man, went elsewhere looking for more opportunity. He practiced medicine in Henrico County (part of which later became Goochland County) for many years.

    Jean Pierre's grandfather was a Doctor of Law and was apparently successful. His father, Jean Pierre Bondurant, Sieur de Cougoussat, Advocate, did not seem to be as successful as he was in debt when he died. At one time, Jean Pierre, the immigrant, was forced to accept public assistance from the Church of Rome. He was apprenticed to his father's cousin, Andre, a Master Apothecary, where he learned enough medicine to be accounted a Doctor in the Colonies in Virginia.

    In 1704, the Huguenot men petitioned to become citizens of the colony and by an act passed in 1705, they, including Jean Pierre, were granted citizenship by the Governor and House of Burgesses.

    Jean Pierre obtained 200 acres of land on Old Town Creek, near present Matoaca, across the Appomattox River from Petersburg. He sold that on 29 Dec 1708 to John Wilson Sr., acknowledged in court 1 June 1709. In 1711 he registered a cattle mark with the Virginia governor. On March 24 he purchased, from the King of England, 400 acres on the south side of the James River located on Jones Creek and Matthews Branch in Henrico County, later part of Goochland County. In 1729, sons Peter and John were listed as tithables on this land, but the father does not appear on the tithables lists until 1730. This seems to indicate that the parents were living elsewhere and the sons had come ahead to prepare the new land. This land was divided among his sons in his will in 1734. Jean Peire was elected to the Vestry of King William Parish Church, but died before he could take office.

    It is not known if he was married more than once and, if so, which children belong to each wife. A wife Ann, the mother of his son Peter, is mentioned in his will. Many researchers had thought that his wife was Ann Faure but this appears incorrect. She may have been Ann Tanner. The will of Mrs. Mary Tanner, Albermarle Co., Virginia, in the 1760s, left $1 to her daughter Ann Bondurant. Whether this is the widow of Jean Pierre has not been proven. Also, the marriage date cannot be confirmed. The date shown is given by some researchers but it has never been proven.

    In 1990 the Bondurant Family Association erected a fence and placed a commemorative plaque at the posited graves of Jean Pierre and Ann Bondurant. The graveyard is located on Birdsong Lane (Road No. 1217) near Powhatan, in Powhatan County, Virginia. The plaque reads:
    To the glory of God and in memory of Jean Pierre
    Bondurant and his wife Ann. Born in Génolhac,
    France 18 July 1677, Jean Pierre (John Peter)
    Bondurant escaped to Switzerland in 1697, and
    reached Jamestown with other Huguenots in 1700.
    Trained as an apothecary, he practiced medicine
    in Virginia where he married Ann. Members of
    King William Parish. He died near Manakin
    1734/35. Their five children were John, Peter,
    Joseph, Ann and Frances.
    Erected 1990 by descendants.

    Jean made a will on 25 September 1734. The will of John Peter Bondurant, Gouchland County, Virginia:
    In the name of God Amen, I John Peter Bondurant, being sick and weak by of good sound disposition mind and memory, all praise be given to God for it, and now minding to settle my worldly estate which it has please God to bestow upon me before I depart this life: I do make and appoint this my last will and testament in manner and form following:
    First: I give my soul to God who gave it, and my body to the earth from which it was taken, to be decently buried according to the discretion of my Executors hereafter named.
    Item: I give and bequeth unto my son John Bundurant, one hundred and forty acres of land which he now dwelleth on and one horse and one hog and blanket and rug and sheet and hide and bed cord and frou pot, and dish and basin and three plates and one cow and calf that he is now possessed of him and to his heirs forever.
    Item:I give and bequeath unto my son Peter Bondurant one hundred and fifty acres of land on Age Creek and up along creek Goos, and a horse named Smoker and one cow and calf and two sows and four shoats and one pewter dish and one basin and one porringer and six pewter spoons and one frou pot and one rug and blanket and sheet and brown lining to make him a bed, to him and his heirs lawfully begotten forever, but if one or all of my sons die without issue, then to the survivor and his heirs lawfully begotten forever.
    Item: I give and bequeath to my son Joseph Bondurant one hundred and fifty acres of land with the purtenances belonging thereto, where he now dwelleth, and one cow and calf in the possession of James Ford and two sows and four shoats and one ram sheep, and one mair with the hors colts the she has and the mair fols to return to me and two dishes, one large and one small, one basin and six plates and one Porringer and one paint pot and one sow and four shoats, to him and his heirs forever.
    Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Ann Ford one heifer eighteen months old, and one sow and pigs to her and her heirs forever.
    Item: I give to my daughter Frances Salle one heifer at the age of eighteen months and one sow and pigs to her and her heirs forever.
    And I do give unto my son Peter Bondurant all my wearing clothes and it is my desire that my wife keep them and let him have them as she sees fit and my carpenter tools and shoemakers tools and croscut saw and wagons I lend for the use of my wife and two sons and their heirs be no hinderance or molestation of any persons or persons whatsoever.
    Item: I give to my loving wife Ann Bondurant after all my just debts and funeral charges and legacies are paid, all the remainder of my estate real and personal in this place or also wherever to her and her heirs forever, and I do allow my loving wife Ann Bondurant whole and sole Executor of this my last will and testament, revoking all other wills by me made heretofore.

    It is my desire that my son Peter Bondurant heirs his share of land on the S. & E. of Age Branch and my son John Bondurant and my son Joseph Bondurant to have their share on the S. & W. of my branch to be equally divided between them according as the lines go and to have the liberty of cutting any pine or pine trees upon my son Peter Bondurant's land for their house.

    His will was proved on 25 January 1734/35. At the court held for Goochland County January 25th, 1734, this will was proved by the oaths of John Cook and James Ford, two of the witnesses hereto and was admitted to probate.

    Timeline of Joseph Ballinger's Life

    1691: Joseph Ballenger was born in Burlington County, NJ.[24] There are several researchers who have reservations regarding Joseph's parentage. They'd like more proof that he was the son of Henry and Mary Harding Ballenger and ask the quite relevant question: Where was he between 1710 and 1729?

    1694: Charity Wade was born in New Jersey.[25] Her parents are not known by this researcher, but many have speculated that her father was James Wade and that Charity may have been the sister of Robert Wade, who also moved to Goochland County, VA. There is no doubt, that the Wades were Quakers. (William S. Scroggins has an excellent web site with information on the Wades at wgscroggins.kueber.us.)

    Although Joseph was born and raised among the Society of Friends, he eventually became a member of the Church of England, the only sanctioned church of the Virginia Colony. There is no record, however, of his having been disowned by the Quakers, perhaps because, like so many others, he simply drifted away after moving to the Virginia frontier. Although some have reported that he became a minister in the Anglican Church, performing many marriages, this would seem unlikely. An Anglican vicar needed a divinity degree obtainable only in England, the major cause of the perpetual shortage of vicars in the Colonies. Far from having a divinity degree, Joseph signed his will with his mark. It would therefore make more historical sense if he had become a Baptist minister or an Anglican layman.[26] In any case, he may have become confused with his son Joseph who did perform marriages.

    1710: Joseph purchased 340 acres in Burlington County from his father Henry. It was Joseph's share of 1,200 acres that Henry Ballenger deeded to his sons Joseph, Josiah, and Henry.

    c. 1720: Joseph married Charity Wade in Burlington County.[27] Or not? The record cited by Reeves shows no trace of Joseph or Charity. We therefore have no documented event that could fill in the lost years of 1710-1729.

    A group of Quakers formed under Alexander Ross and Morgan Bryan in Pennsylvania for the purpose of settling in Maryland and Virginia. Brothers Joseph, Josiah, and Henry supposedly joined this group: "Associated with Ross were Joseph Ballinger and James Wright".[28] (James Wright was the father of Josiah's wife Mary Wright Ballenger and Henry's wife Hannah Wright Ballenger.)

    22 Aug 1729: Joseph Barringer [doubtless Ballinger] purchased 128 acres on the main fork of Bird [Byrd] Creek on the north side of the James River in Goochland County, VA from Henry Reynolds for £15.[29] Robert Wade purchased land lying "near" Bird Creek on the same day.

    19 Sep 1732: Joseph Barringer was named surveyor of the road 2 miles above the mouth of Bird Creek as far as Buck Island.[30] Bird Creek lies in the southwester corner of the county.

    15 May 1733: Samuel Buck was appointed surveyor of the road from Joseph Barringer's to Buck Island.[31]

    21 Jan 1734: Various tithables were ordered to work on the road on the south side of the North river above "Barrenger's Road".[32]

    March 1735: The case of Joseph Barrenger against James Howlin was dismissed by the court in Goochland County.[33]

    18 Nov 1735: The court fined John Henderson £10 for abusing "Charity Barrenger . . . by words, speaking scandalous of her, and striking her in the face". The complaint had been brought by husband Joseph Barrenger. The court also required Henderson to give a bond of £100 to insure his good behavior for 1 year and 1 day, "especially towards Charity".[34]

    c. 1736: Joseph Barrenger served on jury hearing case of John Johnston versus John Scruggs for trespass in Goochland County.[35]

    5 Oct 1736: Joseph Ballenger was mentioned as an adjoining landowner in a deed for William Mattock on the north side of the James River close to Little Byrd Creek.[36]

    9 Jul 1737: Joseph Ballenger received a land patent for 200 acres on the south side of the Fluvanna River in Goochland. This land may have been called the "Seven Islands".[37] Reeves incorrectly claims that the tract was patented to Samuel Jordan in 1736 and only "formerly granted to Joseph Ballenger".[38]

    18 Jul 1739: Joseph Barrenger's tithables were ordered to work on the road from the Bird Creek bridge to the Crooked Falls on the Rivanna River.[39]

    15 Sep 1741: Joseph and Charity Ballenger sold 200 acres on the Rivanna River adjoining George Nicholas in St. James Parish to Thomas Walton for £30. This parcel was described as having been granted to Joseph on 9 Jul 1737. Witnesses: Robert Walton, William Witt, John Popham, and Julius Sanders. Signed by Joseph (x) and Charity (x) Ballenger.[40] The James River was called the Rivanna.

    15 Sep 1741: John Henry was appointed to clear a bridle path from Mountain Road to "Barringer's on the Rivanna River".[41]

    24 Feb 1742: Land sold by Richard Mullins to Bryan Connerly was described as adjoining Jospeh Ballenger on north side of James River.[42]

    5 Jun 1744: Joseph signed his will with his mark.
