    Notes:

Brothers George and Calvin Moore appear to have run most of the family livery business during the Civil War. In the early part of the war George and Thornton stayed in Danville. Calvin came home from the war in June 1863. Both George and Calvin conducted extensive transactions related to the business. Calvin appears to have worked mainly as a stage driver, while George traded, boarded, and rented horses. He owned a number of wagons, carriages, and buggies as well. Since they were in Danville, a good amount of livery and stage business was conducted with the Confederate Army. Surviving Confederate invoices are either signed by or refer to Major William T Sutherlin, the Army's Quartermaster in Danville during the war. After the fall of Richmond the government relocated to Danville. Sutherlin opened his home to Davis and his cabinet during the week which led to Appomattox. Danville became known as the Last Capital of the Confederacy.

The entire family, including 7 brothers and their families, worked the livery as of the 1860 census. 5 of the 7 brothers enlisted in the 18th Virginia Infantry Regiment on April 23, 1861.

Jacob died 1821 in Bedford county. Elizabeth Bondurant of Bedford Co VA on 4 June 1830 again asked for Bounty Land “in the name of her ancestor Jacob Waid.” She was the wife of Ephraim Bondurant.

    Notes:

The Staunton River is the boundary line between Campbell and Pittsylvania Counties. The road at left is the old stage road from Danville to Lynchburg, Virginia. William Pleasant Moon (1800-1879)and his daughter's husband Daniel Barber settled here before the Civil War. Daniel died as a Confederate soldier. John Ellis Jones married Daniel's daughter after the War and moved in with his widow.

In 1857 Daniel Barber and his father-in-law William Pleasant Moon, bought adjoining farms, which totaled just over 200 acres. The land was on Beechtree Creek, near Staunton River and the Hill Grove Post Office. The Pleasant Moon log cabin, which is still standing, is east of the old stage road from Danville to Lynchburg, which crossed the Staunton River at Ward's Bridge.

The large family graveyard is across the spring branch east of the Moon cabin. Daniel and Mary buried many children here. One-year-old Jenny L. Barber died in 1859. George W. Barber, age three, died in 1860. Diphtheria swept though the house in September 1862. During that one month, four children died. Nancy was two; Susan, four; Thomas, six; and Mary, eight years old. My grandmother Martha would have been 12 or 13. Daniel had enlisted in the Confederate army on March 10, 1862, and was not at home to bury his little ones. He died on April 3, 1863, at Guinea Station, of smallpox. His son-in-law, John Ellis Jones, was buried here in 1889.

1870 census: Daniel Barber died of smallpox, as a solder, in 1863, at Guinea Station, near Fredericksburg, during the Civil War. His widow, Elizabeth Barber, had four children at home and her son-in-law John Ellis Jones. Here, John appears to be a child because the census taker failed to list him and Martha's last name. John and Martha were married earlier that year on February 17, 1870.

In 1908, Dan and Annie Jones bought four lots at the corner of Washington and Valley (later Aspen) Streets, in Pittsylvania County. These lots were a hundred yards from the city limits, which crossed Washington Street at Sixth Street. The city annexed this area in 1931.

William married Mary Woodson Holt on 7 Feb 1820 in , Charlotte, Virginia, USA. Mary (daughter of John F Holt and Henrietta Smith) was born on 17 Dec 1800 in , Charlotte, Virginia, USA; died on 4 Jun 1880 in , Pittsylvania, Virginia, USA; was buried in Grit, Pittsylvania, Virginia, USA. Later, Isaac Wade enlisted in the Bedford County, Virginia, militia, which was called-up in August 1781 to go to Little York for the planned battle with Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. There he witnessed the surrender of the British to generals Washington and Lafayette. He was discharged from the militia on the battlefield, immediately after the victory in October 1781. JACOB WADE, “LATE SOLDIER OF THE CONTINENTAL LINE”

Bedford Co., VA, Court Order Book 22, 1828-1829, p. 203, recorded information that Elizabeth Wade who died before 1877, “was the daughter and only heir of Jacob Wade late soldier of the Continental Line” in the American Revolution. Elizabeth was the wife of EPHRAIM BONDURANT (abt. 1790 - 1877) of Bedford Co., VA. Ephraim is believed to be one of the children of John Bondurant and Martha ? who moved from Buckingham Co. to Bedford Co., VA, about the time of the Revolution. This John may have been the baby son of John and Sarah R. Taylor Bondurant, who was baptized in King William Parish in 1737, Goochland Co., VA. The Bedford Co. document would qualify descendants of Elizabeth and Ephraim for membership in SAR or DAR, based on Jacob Wade’s service.

Hello & thanks for your reply: Full name is DANIEL COLEMAN EDWARDS, b. abt 1750 in VA. Ancestry.Com always show birth as being in Bedford Co but I find no proof. He was supposely the son of WILLIAM EDWARDS & Grizzel Coleman, dau. of Daniel & PATIENCE ELLIOTT. DC's will was probated in Cumberland Co [Southam Par] 22 Jan 1770 & refers to his dau. Grizzel as Grizzel Edwards. Patience's will was probated 26 Aug 1771, Southam Par, Cumberland Co. per "Abstracts of Cumberland Co, VA Will Books 1 & 2, pp. 43 & 47.I went to Cumberland Ct House & searched for Daniel but found only William. In Pittsylvania Co. I found a copy of an Indenture in Deed Book 11, pp 246-247 dated 15 Feb 1798 whereby Bennett sold to DANIEL C. EDWARDS OF THE COUNTY OF BEDFORD. Proving his residence prior to that date was Bedford Co & then became resident of PittsCo. In another deed dated 15 Sep 1820 Daniel's full name is used [DCE].In "Marriages & Deaths From Lynchburg, VA Newspapers 1794-1836 sponsored by Randall Holt Chapter, NSD of the American Colonists, p. 180 has a brief obit & from there I found a complete copy of same: MR. EDWARDS WAS A SOLDIER IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR...Obit has a title ANOTHER REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER GONE. That statement is not enough to prove his service as I submitted DCE DAR last year & was told that I needed more proof. He has never been submitted before. If I had to guess, I would guess that he lived in BedCo during the War years... so far, no proof. No Oath taken in PittsCo. but I cannot find any such list for Bedford. I queried PittsCo Historical Society, nothing there in the way of anything! So: if DCE's parents are in fact Wm. & Grizzel, why was he born in Bedford Co. & lived there for a good part of his adult life? He is not to be found in Maude Carter Clement's book, nor in the 1777 Oaths list of PittsCo, nor VAs Colonial Soldiers nor VA Military Records but for one DANIEL EDWARDS who was paid along with others for work on the fort at York Towne, p. 464. DAR replied that he would not have traveled to York Towne just to help build a fort. Someone once suspected he had been in the 14th or 15th VA Reg. No proof yet.Do I know too much! Also know he did not give food, animals tot he War effort in any of the 3 counties.ThanksPJ- Original Message ----- From: "marsha moses" <[log in to unmask]>To: <[log in to unmask]>Sent: Saturday, July 02, 2011 9:11 AMSubject: Re: [VA-ROOTS] Pittsylvania & Bedford Co, VA. William Edwards 1720-1784 married Grissel Coleman in 1750 Cumberland Co., VA. Grissel Coleman 1725-1788 has long been confused with her aunt Grissel Coleman 1705-1759 who died in Goochland Co., VA. The 1782 Cumberland Co., VA tax list has William Edwards as head of household, however in 1784 Grissel Edwards is listed as Head of Household, and the Estate Inventory of William Edwards deceased was filed in the Jan 1786 Cumberland Co., VA court. Notes:

John Moon was born about 1755, probably in Albemarle County, Virginia, American Colony, along the Hardware River -- in the part that by 1810 became part of Fluvanna County. His father, William, had land on the Hardware, adjacent to land owned by his brother, Jacob, though Jacob sold his tract and moved to Bedford County, Virginia. He is named in his father William Moon's will, among William Moon, the father, and children Pleasant, William, Archer, John, Martha, Judah, Elizabeth, Salley, Mildred and Roxey.

John Moon married Martha Sampson December 19, 1782, most likely in Cumberland County, Virginia, but no record has been found outside of family history. William Pleasant Moon is found on numerous Legislative petitions, along with his father-in-law, William Sampson. He is listed in the will of Martha's father, William Sampson, which was written in 1792 and not probated until 1803, in Halifax County, Virginia. In that will, he left to "my daughter Martha Moon, all the monies due me by her husband John Moon." Some have transcribed this will as John Moor and Martha Moor, but compared to other writings by the same Clerk of Court of Halifax County, Virginia, what people often transcribe as "Moor" is "Moon."

Cumberland County, Virginia, contains legislative petitions from Cumberland County, beginning in 1776. William Sampson, John Moon, William Moon, Thomas Moon, Daniel North, Thomas North, William McKinney, Gilbert North, Isham Carter, Stephen Moon and many more signed petitions. Some of these men ended up as husbands of daughters of Archibald, John, William C. and Stephen Moon, in Charlotte County, and later moving to Halifax County.

A Cumberland County deeds book lists William and John Moon having bought land from Moses Arnold in 1776. That land was sold to John Ford, in 1780.

John Moon is found in 1784 purchasing land with William C Moon, with part of the agreement being, "This indenture, made this 28th day of October in the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty four, between William Samson of the county of Charlotte, party of one part, and William Moon and John Moon, both of the county aforesaid, parties of the other part, hath granted, bargained and sold property including land with all woods, underwood ways, swamps, low grounds, mines, minerals and all other advantages whatsoever with the Estate, right, title and interest, to have and to hold the said parcel of land to the said William Moon and John Moon. Signed sealed and delivered at a Court held in Charlotte County the 7th day of March 1785."

William Sampson moved to Halifax in 1792, as there is a deed from William Sampson to Stephen and John Moon.

In 1810, in Charlotte County, Virginia., "A return of the sale of John Moon dec'd made the 17th day of December 1825." Pleasant Moon, Jane Moon, Stephen Moon, Isham Moon and Archbald Moon are listed individually as having received household furnishings, cattle, farm equipment and land. Part of the record is "At a Court help for Charlotte County the 1st day of May 1826 ... This account of sales of the Estate of John Moon, deed made the 17th date of December 1825 was this day returned into court and ordered to be recorded. Teste. Winslow Robinson."
