"Spels," 1s. 8d.; for 30 morning snacks and 30 gills whiskey, Jan. 15, 1781. (Footnote: "Spels" was doubtless spelt, a grain related to wheat and barley, much used for food in Germany and Switzerland. It is also called "German wheat." This is a circumstantial touch reminding us that most of the early settlers of Rockingham came from Germany and Switzerland. The "Spotts" sold by Fred. Armentrout were likely some grain or vegetable, also.)
