    Misbehavior of John Lightfoot.
    On 25 September 1696 the Minutes of the Council of Virginia show that John Lightfoot produced the King's Letter for his admission to that body. In view of his reputation for ill behavior the Council decided that he would not be sworn! The Council considered (and denied) his admission twice more. Finally, on 30 October 1696 he was summoned to the Council. His associates included Richard Lee, William Byrd, Edmund Jennings, Daniel Parke--all leading men of the colony.

    Sometime before 1700 Col. John Lightfoot had a mansion erected in keeping with his official position. The White House was a commodious dwelling, with room for large entertaining. John Lightfoot's sons conveyed the estates that had been his to Col. John Custis. Col. John Custis' son, Daniel Parke Custis, married Martha Dandridge, who later maried George Washington. It is from the White House on the Pamunkey that the White House in Washington got its name.

    While at one time John Lightfoot enjoyed the patronage of the Royal Governor. Francis Nicholson, in later years their friendship was strained. John Lightfoot was a member of the group which drew up a petition to Queen Anne, complaining of Nicholson's maladministration.

    John Lightfoot became a Vestryman at St. Peter's parish on 1 June 1703.

    John III and his brother Phillip arrived with their parents in the New World in about 1670 at a time when the entire immigrant population of Virgina numbered less than 40,000. The two boys may have lived with their Uncle Phillip while their father was at sea if their mother was deceased. In any case, the colonial records show that John III married Anne Goodrich of Rappahanock in that county in 1681. He subsequently took up residence in New Kent Co. (later Orange and then Culpeper Co.) and appears in a variety of colonial records indicating that he was active in civil and military affairs attaining the rank of Colonel in the Army of Virginia. His fortunes were no doubt improved in 1683 through the inheritance left to him by his Grandmother Elizabeth and the inheritance of his father`s estate in 1687. In addition he acquired substantial property rights as a dowery of his wife Anne which were later sold to his brother Philip. It is also recorded that he visited England on at least one occasion in 1692 as a member of the Colonial Council. In 1699 Col. John Lightfoot was a [Tax] Collector for the country between the James and York Rivers (Salisbury MSS), and in 1701 he voted as a Council member for the recall of Nicholson, a widely unpopular governor. At that time he also served as Commander in Chief of the militia of King and Queen Co., VA. He died on 28 May 1707 in New Kent Co.

    John III was born in 1648 in Middlesex county, England. He and his brother Phillip arrived with their parents in America about 1670. The two boys may have lived with their Uncle Phillip while their father was at sea.

    John III married Susannah (Anne) Goodrich on Dec. 3, 1681. John and his wife lived in New Kent County, Virginia (later Orange and Culpepper County), and he appears in a variety of colonial records indicating that he was active in civil and military affairs, attaining the rank of colonel in the Army of Virginia.

    John died on May 28, 1707, in New Kent, Virginia.

    Notes:

    Records show that John II followed briefly in his father's footsteps attending both Lincoln College and Gray's Inn Law School (1641-1643). He does not appear to have practiced law for any extensive period leaving the family profession to his younger brothers William and Richard. John II is identified as a Captain of the Royal Navy operating in the waters off Virginia in 1666. His ship was lost in that year. He also commanded the HMS Covertine of London which returned from a voyage to Virginia in 1670. He migrated with his two sons to America shortly therefater. On 10 June 1670, he was appointed Auditor General of Virginia to replace Thomas Stegge who had died in office. English records clearly establish that John II died in the West Indies (Surinam) or the waters therof in 1686.

    John Lightfoot II is probably the most elusive and mysterious link in the Lightfoot genealogy. His migration to America and profession as a Ship's Captain contributed to that somewhat. In addition, he was occasionally confused with his son John III by some early genealogy researchers. The inability of researchers to identify his wife is particularly vexing and curious. She apparently died young since they produced only two heirs ( John III and Phillip ) and since John II was identified as a "widower" at the time of his death in 1686.

    The records do show that John II followed briefly in his father's footsteps attending both Lincoln College and Gray's Inn Law School (1641-1643). But he does not appear to have practiced law for any extensive period apparently leaving the profession and family business to his younger brothers William and Richard. He apparently migrated with family ( sons John III and Phillip ) to America shortly thereafter. But his residence there is uncertain.

    John II is identified as a Captain of the Royal Navy operating in the waters of Virginia in 1666 when he lost his ship, and is also believed to have commanded the "Covertine of London" which returned from a voyage to Virginia in 1670. On 10 June, 1670 he was appointed the Auditor General of Virginia to replace Thomas Stegge who had died in office.

    In any case English records clearly establish that he died in the West Indies (Surinam) or the water thereof in 1686. His brother William (in England) was subsequently appointed executor of his estate in England to administer the goods etc. of the said deceased during the absence and for the use of the said children ( John III and Phillip ) living in parts beyond the seas (America). His sons would have been in their mid-twenties and presumably beginning their own careers at that time.

    John Lightfoot married Elizabeth Tailor, daughter of John Tailor of Maidstone, Kent, England. She died before him since he is listed as a widower who died at Surinam in the West Indies. We know that Capt John Lightfoot was in Virginia waters in 1666 when he lost his ship. We also think it is very likely he was the Captain Lightfoot who commanded a merchant ship, The Covertine of London, which had just returned from a voyage to Virginia in June 1670.

    He was known as the "Honorable" Captain John Lightfoot of Middlesex County, England and he died before 7 Mar 1687 in Surinam, West Indies as War Captain of his Majesty's Ship.

    John Lightfoot a Captain of one of the H.M. Ships, died at Sea: Anno.1682 Aet: Circa 55 years, 1682.

    He was admitted 18 Feb 1641 into Gray's Inn, aforesaid as the eldest son of John Lightfoot, one of the Fellows. We may assume that he was about nineteen years old at the time since that was the age at which his father was admitted to Gray's Inn.

    Notes:

    Elizabeth Underwood married first James Taylor. She felt compelled to appeal to the Governor and Council for a separation in order that she could return to the house of her mother. There apparently was physical abuse as she feared being killed or maimed. Before the matter was finally settled the husband died according to the first record book of Surry County, Recorded 26 March 1654. Her daughter Elizabeth had married John Catlett who was mentioned as son in law.

    1 May 1655, the estate account of James Taylor returned among other items is where Mr. Slaughter was paid one third of the estate in right of his wife (This is apparently the Francis Slaughter shown as her first husband as follows:

    Elizabeth Underwood married first Francis Slaughter; then John Catlett, Sr. per The Family Register of Nicholas Taliaferro with notes by William Buckner McGroarty, William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Volume 1 Second Series, July 1921, Volume 3.

    On 6 November 1655, Francis Slaughter for and in consideration of two cowes with calves and 2000 pounds of tobacco to be paid the 10th of October next and 1000 pounds more to be paid the 10th of 8ber 1657 by Thomas Culmer of Surrey Countye Chyrurgion all claim (in right of his wife) unto the house and plantation where he now lives.

    It seems that they removed to Rappahannock River soon after settling this property but he died not long after the removal since his will was recorded on page 83 of the volume containing records from 1656 to 1664 but the date is mutilated.

    It was before Mrs. Margaret Upton married Capt. Thomas Lucas as he bequeathed to his mother-in-law Mrs Margaret Upon 10 shillings to buy a pair of gloves, to brother-in-law Coll More Fantleroy a book entitled Hookers Eclestical policy, to Andre Dew his overseer as much broadcloth as will make him a suite, to dear wife Elizabeth (Underwood) Slaughter residue of estate lands, houses and to her heirs except my rapier belt and young mare that runs either about Lawnes or Lower Chippox Creek. Friend and loving **** Humphrey Booth assistant to wife. 10 April **** Elizabeth Slaughter of Rappahannock in Virginia for & in Consideration ...affection & motherly love .... beloved son to him the said Francis another mare foal in lieu of ...... the age between .... teen and thirty years which are to be (God willing) had & Soleminized shortly between me the said ........ said Francis Slaughter when he attains the age of twenty one years formerly privileged by his father Captain Francis Slaughter ..... the said Elizabeth Frrely give and bestow unto him the female increase with a feather bed and all appruts. Witnesses Thomas Hawkins, Ant. Stephens.

    This deed of gift is recorded in volume 1656-84, page 34, Rappahannock County apparently just before she was going to marry her third husband John Catlett.

    She had married him by 17 January 1664 when she made a power of attorney to her weloved kinsman Mr. Thomas Hawkins to acknowledge her consent to sale of land from her husband John Catlett to James Yeats (1656-64, page 408, Rappahannock County).

    Colonel John Catlett survived for some years and is said to have been killed while defending a fort at Port Royal against Indians. They had four children, John Catlett; Elizabeth Catlett; William Catlett and Sarah Catlett who are mentioned in the will of their mother.

    On 20 April 1672 there was recorded a marriage agreement between Amory Butler of Rappahannock County, Clerk and Mrs. Elizabeth (Underwood) Catlett which was dated May 1671 in which the said Mr. Butler was to relinquish all right which might accrue to him by the said marriage now in her possession as administrator of her late husbland Colonel John Catlett deceased or any right in her dower. Her children now in England. Trustees were Major William Pierce of Westmoreland County and Mr. Edward Rowzee. Witnesses: Anthony Bridges and John Rosier (Vol 1672-76, page 19)

    This much married lady did not long survive her fourth matrimonial venture as her will was entered for probate 7 May 1673, just two years from the date of her marriage agreement.
