    Notes:

Brothers George and Calvin Moore appear to have run most of the family livery business during the Civil War. In the early part of the war George and Thornton stayed in Danville. Calvin came home from the war in June 1863. Both George and Calvin conducted extensive transactions related to the business. Calvin appears to have worked mainly as a stage driver, while George traded, boarded, and rented horses. He owned a number of wagons, carriages, and buggies as well. Since they were in Danville, a good amount of livery and stage business was conducted with the Confederate Army. Surviving Confederate invoices are either signed by or refer to Major William T Sutherlin, the Army's Quartermaster in Danville during the war. After the fall of Richmond the government relocated to Danville. Sutherlin opened his home to Davis and his cabinet during the week which led to Appomattox. Danville became known as the Last Capital of the Confederacy.

The entire family, including 7 brothers and their families, worked the livery as of the 1860 census. 5 of the 7 brothers enlisted in the 18th Virginia Infantry Regiment on April 23, 1861.

    Notes:

John Barnet Shelhorse was born in Aue, Germany on January 24, 1755. His name was Johann Barnet Schelhase. In Germany it is written both ways - Schelhase and Schelhasen.

Johann and two brothers, Peter and Martin, came to America in 1776 as Hessian soldiers, German mercenaries who were employed by Britain in the Revolutionary War against the Colonials. Their unit was with Cornwallis at Yorktown for his surrender in 1781. Martin was killed in the final battle, but Johann and Peter were among those who were sent first to Winchester, Virginia for 6-12 months, then finally to Frederick prison in Maryland. After the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, ending the war, the Hessian troops were ordered to walk to New York, then to be transported back to Germany. Many Hessians deserted during this time, choosing to stay in America. This is what Johann and Peter did. Johann Schelhase changed his name to John Shelhorse, married Mary Hoofman and settled in Pittsylvania County Virginia near Gretna. I am not sure where Peter went...I'm thinking South Carolina.

John Schelhausen is better known as Barnett Shelhorse.

In A HISTORY OF PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA by Maud Carter Clement he is mentioned as John Schelhausen, Schelhausen is the plural of Schelhase in German. Barnett's full name was John Barnett Shelhorse which orginally had been Johann Bernhard Schelhase. Barnett's father was named Jacob (Johann Jacob Schelhase) and his mother was named Elizabeth (Maria Elizabeth Schelhase) which is where the names of Barnett's first son and daughter come from. Jacob (b. 11/14/1789 d. 5/12/1846) first married Mary (Polly) Woodson on August 5, 1812. She passed away on July 21, 1813 and he later married Marry Hanes (b.12/12/1800 d.1/1/1856) on September 24, 1817. They had ten children. Martha Jane was their second child. The Virginia Shelhorse's of today are descended from Jacob Shelhorse.

Will of BARNET SHELHORSE, Written July 18 1837, proved Aug 21 1837. Names wife, Mary, daughters Elizabeth, Sally, Nancy, Catherine, Jane and Susan. To William Yates, "who married my daughter Polly", son Jacob, son William, son Henry.

Ex: sons Jacob and Henry. Witnesses: Richard Jones, William Thomas and William A. Anthony.

John Barnett Shelhorse was born Johann Bernhard Schelhase on the 24th of January 1755 near the village of Aue, Germany. He was the son of Johann Jacob Schelhase (b. August 22, 1721 d. June 25, 1797) and Maria Elizabeth (Korlin) Schelhase (b. 1720 d. August 31, 1770). Barnett arrived at New York on August 12, 1776 as part of Company 2 of the ErbPrinz Regiment Hessen-Kassel. With Barnett were his brothers Peter and Martin. They were among the first Hessians to serve in the American Revolution. Their regiment fought in the battles of Brooklyn, White Plains, and were stationed in New York from 1777 until 1781. In March of 1781 they were sent by sea to Portsmouth, Virginia. They were with Cornwallis at Yorktown when he surrendered in October of 1781. Martin was killed at that battle and Barnett and Peter were first sent to Winchester, Virginia where they were held for 6-12 months before being sent to Frederick Prison in Maryland. After the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, ending the War for Independence, the Hessian prisoners were ordered to walk to New York to be transported back to Europe. Both Barnett and Peter decided not to return and slipped away. They were reported to have deserted in May of 1783. He married Mary Hoofman (b. 1760's d. 1850's) in Pennsylvania about 1784 and by 1791 had moved to northern Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Tradition also says that Barnett received a land grant for his services in the American Revolution which consisted of all the land a man could plow around in a day.

Barnett and Mary raised a large family, three boys and seven girls.

Barnett and Mary's ninth child was Henry Fleming Shelhorse who was born on September 4, 1808. The Georgia Shelhorse's are descended from Henry.

Barnett is buried in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on the farm owned by H. Odell Owen.

    BARNETT SHELHORSE (c. 1753 to 1837)
The origins of the Shelhorse family are shrouded with mystery, but a story exists in all branches of the family that the original ancestor came to the United States during the Revolutionary War as a Hessian soldier. The Hessians were Germans who had been hired by the British to fight their rebellious Colonists.

It is known the Hessians fought in Pennsylvania and it is assumed our ancestor served there. We are first able to definitely pick him up in court records a number of years after the Revolutionary War. His name was Barnett Schelhausen, and by 1790 had married and moved with his wife and beginning family to northern Pittsylvania County, Virginia. In Pittsylvania County, he Americanized his name to Shelhorse. (With the spelling and pronunciation that we use to this day). Barnett and his wife Mary spent the rest of their lives in Pittsylvania County, farming, and raising a large family. There were ten children, seven girls, and three boys.

By the early 1800s, the United States was expanding with the addition of the new lands to the west, and several of Barnett's children chose to leave Virginia and follow the southern and westward routes. One son, William, and two daughters Nancy and Jane, moved to Missouri where they married and raised families. Another son, Henry Fleming Shelhorse, went with his young wife, Elizabeth, to northern Georgia. The third son of Barnett Shelhorse, Jacob, chose to remain in Pittsylvaina County and continue farming as his father had.

    JACOB SHELHORSE (1789 to 1846)

In 1812, the year that the War of 1812 between the United States and Britain began, Jacob Shelhorse here in Pittsylvania County was probably not particularly interested in the war because he, a young man of 23 had just married, his sweetheart Polly Woodson, who was only 15 years old at the time. A year later, tragedy struck young Jacob's family. Polly died.

It was five years before Jacob remarried, by the time he had reached the mature age of 28. His new bride Mary Haynes was 17. In this marriage Jacob found a happy life, raising a large family and farming the land of Pittssylvania County, as his father had.

Jacob had ten children, five boys and five girls. Jacob's children were not struck with the wanderlust of the west and most remained during their lives in Pittsylvania County continuing as farmers. Interestingly, two of Jacob's sons chose to marry sisters. William Henry Shelhorse and James Moody Shelhorse (brothers) married Cecilia A. Crider and Susan C. Crider (sisters) respectively.

William Henry Shelhorse (1824 to 1893)

Ironically Jacob's eldest son, William Henry Shelhorse, repeated his father's tragic marriage pattern. William Henry married in 1851. His new bride, Parthenia Hall, died within two years of their marriage, leaving William with an infant daughter, who also died two years later. William, like his father, picked up the pieces of a broken life and remarried in 1857. His second bridem Cecilia Adeline Crider, bore his five children, and they lived a long life together, disturbed only by the Civil War.r

When the Civil War began in 1861, William Henry and Cecilia had just begun to raise their family. Young George Washington Shelhorse was 4, Mary Elizabeth 3, and William Henry Jr. was only and infant. Nevertheless, William saw it as his duty to leave his family and enlist with his 4 brothers in the Confederate Army. They joined Company I (known as the Gatham Greys) of the 53rd Virginia Infantry Regiment. William was immediately discharged, being over age. But toward the end of the war, when soldiers were desperately needed, he rejoined his unit and was captured in fighting as Five Forks (near Petersburg). He was sent to Point Lookout Military Prison, Maryland and remained there until the war ended in 1865. His release slip provides the earliest physical description that we have of any of the Shelhorse men. He was described as 6 feet 1 inches tall, with hazel eyes, grey hair, and a dark complexion. (At that time William would have been 41 years old.) Cecilia and the children survived the Civil War, and after William's return two more sons were born. Chesley Martin Shelhorse and Lee White Shelhorse.

    William Alexander Parker Family
    Toshes/Toler’s Ferry, Virginia.

William Alexander Parker’s ancestors landed at the Cliffs, St. Mary’s County, Maryland, in 1635. Some of the Parkers migrated to the Baltimore and Washington, DC areas. William Alexander Parker, youngest of his family, moved to Fauquier County, Virginia. He then left Fauquier County and moved to Pittsylvania County in 1768 – to get away from the Indians and to raise tobacco. He and his wife built a home at Toshes, near Toler’s Ferry. It is believed that his wife’s name was Henrietta. Some of their children were David, Benjamin and George. It is told that William Alexander had two other sons who were killed at Braddock’s Defeat in 1755. David and Benjamin moved to Hardin County, Kentucky.
David was there in 1820, when David’s wife accidentally used arsenic instead of soda when preparing their bread; poisoning herself, David and two of their children. Benjamin, David’s considerably older brother, became the guardian of his brother’s surviving children. Some of the Kentucky Parkers moved to Illinois, while others, during the early and mid-1800’s ventured to Texas (Fort Parker) where one of the Parker children, Cynthia Ann, nine years of age, was kidnapped during a Comanche raid in 1836. Cynthia Ann married a Comanche chief. One of her children was Quanah Parker, a well known Comanche chief, who made numerous trips to Washington, DC to negotiate on behalf of his people.

-The Last Comanche Chief, The Life and Times of Quanah Parker, Bill Neeley, published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc).

George Parker married Frances Oaks and stayed at the home place in Pittsylvania County (Toshes). Frances Oaks is related to the Toler family – also spelled Towler. George was born in 1769 and died April 5, 1859. He and his wife are buried at the Parker/Rorer home place, Toshes.
George and Frances had a large family. David Parker, one of their offspring, was born 1802; m. 1st Mary A. Toler (Toler’s Ferry), 1849; m. 2nd Mary Amanda Goggin, 1855; and they also lived in the same house as David’s parents, George and Frances (Oaks). It became the Parker ancestral home. Mary Goggin’s 2nd cousin was Mark Twain (Samuel L Clemens) (see Our Kin, Ackerly and Parker, Bedford County, Virginia families). Mary Goggin Parker had a brother, the Reverend Thomas C. Goggin, well known preacher in Bedford County during the 1800’s.
Another one of George and Frances’ children was the Reverend Joseph Parker, who served a number of churches, and who was very well known and beloved during his lifetime. His farmhouse was renovated in more recent times, and is currently known as Bernard’s Landing (Smith Mountain Lake) in the Bedford, Virginia area. (Moneta). David and Mary (Goggin) Parker’s children were William (Willie) David, Penhook, Pigg River; George Stephen, Vinton, Va; Mary Emily (Emma) m. Jimmy Rorer (Emma and Jimmy Rorer established their residence at the old Parker home – in order to be with her aging and widowed mother, Mary Goggin Parker) – thus it became known as the Parker/Rorer place; and Charles (Charlie) Ross Parker, who m. Mary A. Tuck (Mary Tuck related to Glenns and Whiteheads of Pittsylvania County). Charlie and Mary lived on the Staunton River, Toshes, Virginia. The family attended Summersett Baptist Church. Alice Parker, wife of Giles Jefferson Morton was the youngest of their nine children. She lived in Pittsylvania County all her life.

On 12 February 1777 Isaac and Jacob Wade enrolled for one year in Captain George Lambert's Company of the 14th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line, under the command of Colonel Charles Lewis. They fought in battles at Brandywine and Germantown in Pennsylvania. Later, Isaac Wade enlisted in the Bedford County, Virginia, militia, which was called-up in August 1781 to go to Little York for the planned battle with Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. There he witnessed the surrender of the British to generals Washington and Lafayette. He was discharged from the militia on the battlefield, immediately after the victory in October 1781. JACOB WADE, “LATE SOLDIER OF THE CONTINENTAL LINE”

Bedford Co., VA, Court Order Book 22, 1828-1829, p. 203, recorded information that Elizabeth Wade who died before 1877, “was the daughter and only heir of Jacob Wade late soldier of the Continental Line” in the American Revolution. Elizabeth was the wife of EPHRAIM BONDURANT (abt. 1790 - 1877) of Bedford Co., VA. Ephraim is believed to be one of the children of John Bondurant and Martha ? who moved from Buckingham Co. to Bedford Co., VA, about the time of the Revolution. This John may have been the baby son of John and Sarah R. Taylor Bondurant, who was baptized in King William Parish in 1737, Goochland Co., VA. The Bedford Co. document would qualify descendants of Elizabeth and Ephraim for membership in SAR or DAR, based on Jacob Wade’s service.

Hello & thanks for your reply: Full name is DANIEL COLEMAN EDWARDS, b. abt 1750 in VA. Ancestry.Com always show birth as being in Bedford Co but I find no proof. He was supposely the son of WILLIAM EDWARDS & Grizzel Coleman, dau. of Daniel & PATIENCE ELLIOTT. DC's will was probated in Cumberland Co [Southam Par] 22 Jan 1770 & refers to his dau. Grizzel as Grizzel Edwards. Patience's will was probated 26 Aug 1771, Southam Par, Cumberland Co. per "Abstracts of Cumberland Co, VA Will Books 1 & 2, pp. 43 & 47.I went to Cumberland Ct House & searched for Daniel but found only William. In Pittsylvania Co. I found a copy of an Indenture in Deed Book 11, pp 246-247 dated 15 Feb 1798 whereby Bennett sold to DANIEL C. EDWARDS OF THE COUNTY OF BEDFORD. Proving his residence prior to that date was Bedford Co & then became resident of PittsCo. In another deed dated 15 Sep 1820 Daniel's full name is used [DCE].In "Marriages & Deaths From Lynchburg, VA Newspapers 1794-1836 sponsored by Randall Holt Chapter, NSD of the American Colonists, p. 180 has a brief obit & from there I found a complete copy of same: MR. EDWARDS WAS A SOLDIER IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR...Obit has a title ANOTHER REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER GONE. That statement is not enough to prove his service as I submitted DCE DAR last year & was told that I needed more proof. He has never been submitted before. If I had to guess, I would guess that he lived in BedCo during the War years... so far, no proof. No Oath taken in PittsCo. but I cannot find any such list for Bedford. I queried PittsCo Historical Society, nothing there in the way of anything! So: if DCE's parents are in fact Wm. & Grizzel, why was he born in Bedford Co. & lived there for a good part of his adult life? He is not to be found in Maude Carter Clement's book, nor in the 1777 Oaths list of PittsCo, nor VAs Colonial Soldiers nor VA Military Records but for one DANIEL EDWARDS who was paid along with others for work on the fort at York Towne, p. 464. DAR replied that he would not have traveled to York Towne just to help build a fort. Someone once suspected he had been in the 14th or 15th VA Reg. No proof yet.Do I know too much! Also know he did not give food, animals tot he War effort in any of the 3 counties.ThanksPJ- Original Message ----- From: "marsha moses" <[log in to unmask]>To: <[log in to unmask]>Sent: Saturday, July 02, 2011 9:11 AMSubject: Re: [VA-ROOTS] Pittsylvania & Bedford Co, VA. William Edwards 1720-1784 married Grissel Coleman in 1750 Cumberland Co., VA. Grissel Coleman 1725-1788 has long been confused with her aunt Grissel Coleman 1705-1759 who died in Goochland Co., VA. The 1782 Cumberland Co., VA tax list has William Edwards as head of household, however in 1784 Grissel Edwards is listed as Head of Household, and the Estate Inventory of William Edwards deceased was filed in the Jan 1786 Cumberland Co., VA court.
