    • Deed-Purchase: 03 Apr 1803, , Jackson, Georgia, USA
    • Will: 25 Jul 1822, , Jackson, Georgia, USA

    Notes:

    Birth:
Pittsylvania Co., VA, DB 1, p. 391 - Creel from Cornwell
William Bennett and his father John are witneses to deed. John Creel and Peter Cornwell are prominent members of the Broad Run Baptist Church. William must have been at least 19 years old to have witnessed this deed giving a birthdate of about 1750.

    Residence:
William Bennett appears to have moved to Jackson County in the later half of 1801. On 11 Apr 1801, William is on the tax list of John White in Pittsylvania County. He is absent from the 1802 tax list of Pittsylvania County. On 15 Jan 1802, Armstead Bennett purchased land in Jackson County from Jesse Bennett with Lewis Hardy as a witness. All are identified in the deed as being of Jackson County. Armstead is the son of William and Lewis Hardy is a son-in-law. Therefore, William likely moved his family to Jackson County between 11 Apr 1801 and 15 Jan 1802. His oldest son, Hezekiah, did not move with him, but followed a year or two later.

    Deed-Purchase:
On 3 Apr 1803, William Bennett purchased 200 acres of land on Turkey Creek from John Hase (Hasey) for $450. This was part of a 575 acre grant originally made to John Palmer.

    • Will: 11 Nov 1782, , Pittsylvania, Virginia, USA

Fauquier County Court, 26th of May 1763

"We present David Thomas, Thomas Dodson, Abraham Dodson, Elisha Dodson, Joseph Dodson, Edmund Hayes, Peter Cornwell, Obed Cornwell, Alexander Higgins, & (William Davis on the Biskett Mountain), John Davis, William Carter, Timothy Stamps, John Stamps, William Stamps, Mary Stamps, John Bennett, Fortunatus Dodson, Joshua Owen, Joshua Dodson, John Creel, Rawleigh Dodson, Samuel Bailey, William Shirley, William Young, Joseph Owens, Joshua Scurlock, Edward Hughes, John Cundiff, Anthony Seale, James Shackleford, Henry Hampton, John Shirley, Joseph Morrison, Benjamin Edwards, Anthony Morgan & George Bell of Hamilton Parish for absenting themselves from their Parish Church within this six months last past."

    Census:
Alexander Lee, Thomas Bennett and John Bennett, Sr appear in order on the 1782 census list taken by John Dix in the District of Capt. John Wynn and Capt. John Walters. Alexander Lee is listed with 4 white persons in his household, Thomas Bennett with 4 white persons and John Bennett with 6 white persons. None of the three have any slaves listed.

    Will:
This will was proved on 18 July 1791. The record indicates it was further proved on 20 Feb 1797 and ordered to be recorded. This last date may not be accurate. The will was recorded in Deeds & Wills Book 9 covering the years 1791-1794. If it was recorded in 1797, as the document says, it would have been in Book 10 which covers the years 1794-1797. I believe it likely that the date the will was recorded was 1792. An examination of the wills recorded immediately before and after this one would reveal whether or not this suspicion is true. Furthermore, an inventory of the estate was submitted to the courts on 5 Mar 1792 further reinforcing the idea that the proving of the will was in February 1792.

Deeds and Wills 9, Page 28

In the name of God Amen I John Bennett of the County of Pittsylvania and the State of Virginia planter being very sick and weak in body, but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God. Calling to mind the mortallity of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make & ordain this my last Will and Testament, that is to say

    Died:
In a 1794 deed from Robert Maddin to Samuel Walker, John Bennett, deceased, is identified as an adjoining property owner. (DB 8, p. 489) It is likely that John died in 1785 or 1786. John was present in the 1785 tax list of Pittsylvania County. He was absent from the 1786 land tax list and every year thereafter. In 1787 Elizabeth, John's wife, was listed as head of household on the tax list. Since only single women and widows were included on the list, it appears that John had died before 1787. His absence from the land tax list of 1786 suggests that he died sometime after the 1785 tax list was recorded.
