    Obituary for Rosa (Therese) Schuette
    From Der Nord Westen, 25 Feb. 1904:
    Word was received here yesterday, entirely unanticipated,
    of the death Tues. of Mrs. Therese Schuette, wife of well-
    known local banker, John Schuette, in St. Mary's Hospital,
    Milwaukee, following an appendix operation. Mrs. Schuette
    had gone to Milwaukee ten days ago to see a specialist
    concerning an eye illness. During her stay in Milwaukee
    she fell ill with appendicitis and the doctors advised an
    operation. On Mon. it was reported that the patient was
    recovering. However, her condition worsened and death
    occurred the next day. Mrs. Schuette was well known for
    her charitable activities, so her early death was deeply
    felt. Mrs. Schuette was born 04 June 1845 in the then
    Principality of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, daughter of
    F.X. Stauss, and came to America with her parents in 1853.
    The family first settled in Baltimore but moved to Manitowoc in 1856 where the deceased has lived ever since. On 22 Feb. 1867, she married John Schuette. In addition to her deeply grieving husband she leaves 2 sons -Louis And Edwin Schuette, and 3 daughters -Misses Gesine And Rose Schuette, and Mrs. R. Walker in Menominee, Michigan. She is also survived by 2 brothers -Max and Robert Stauss, as well as a sister, Mrs. Staehle. The funeral will take place Fri. at 2 p.m. Friends are requested not to send flowers.

    AUGUST SCHMIDT (d. 1920) AUGUST SCHMIDT OVERTAKEN BY SUDDEN DEATH Sudden death overtook August Schmidt, pioneer residnet of the city at his home Saturday evening. Mr. Schmidt was up and about during the day and had the evening meal with the family but shortly after complained of being unwell and died at 9 o'clcok. Death was due to heart failure. Mr. Schmidt was 83 years of age, having been born in Germany June 24, 1837. He came to Manitowoc county with his parents when a youth of 17 and the family located at Neshoto. Mr. Schmidt was married Feb. 10, 1861 to Louise Stueck and for many (missing) and flour mill at Shoto, later removing to this city where he was engaged in the lumber business. He was owner of the schooner Lydia and interested in operation of the boat. Mr. Schmidt served as a member of the city council and took active interest in public affairs and was known for his uprightness and honesty at all times, He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Louis Schuette who is at present in California and will not be able to reach here for the funeral which will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 from the late home, the Rev.     LOUISA SCHMIDT (d. 1925) MOTHER OF MRS. L. SCHUETTE PASSES AWAY Mrs. Louisa Schmidt, widow of August Schmidt, pioneer coal dealer of the city and the mother of Mrs. Louis Schuette, passed away at her home on Franklin Street at 7 o'clock last night, aged 79. Mrs. Schmidt was in poor health for some time but had been seriously ill only a few days. Funeral sesrvices which will be private, will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 from the home. Mrs. Schmidt was born in Germany, August 17, 1846 and had been a resident of this city many years. Besides her daughter, she is survived by one sister, Mrs. Aug. Drews.     Louis Schuette, vice president of the Manitowoc Savings Bank and well known in financial circles of Manitowoc county, is a member of one of the old and honored families of this section. His grandparents, John and Katherine
    (Schade) Schuette, natives of Oldenburg, Germany, came to the United States in 1848 and settled in Manitowoc, where John Schuette carried on a grocery business until his death. He and his wife had seven children: Gesine, the
    widow of Gus Bloquelle, a resident of Manitowoc; Henry, deceased, who was engaged in the grocery business; John, the father of Louis; Martha, the widow of Eugene Alter; and Fred, August and George, merchants of Manitowoc.
    John Schuette, father of Louis, was born September 25, 1837, in Oldenburg, Germany, and after the death of his father formed a partnership with his brother, Henry, and engaged in the grocery business. He sold his interests,
    however, in 1884, and organized the Manitowoc Savings Bank. The building at the corner of Eighth and Jay streets, which had formerly been used for the
    same purpose, was purchased and the bank established under the state laws, the capital being fifty thousand dollars, and the first officers being as follows: John Schuette, president; C. E. Esterbrook, vice president; Joseph
    Staehle, cashier. At the present time the officials are: John Schuette, president; Louis Schuette, vice president; Ed Schuette, cashier; Henry Detzen, assistant cashier. John Schuette was also the owner of the second flour mill in Manitowoc, which he still operates; had the government
    contract in 1867 and 1868 for the building of the harbor at this point; is a stockholder in the Eastern Wisconsin Trustee Company; and president of the Manitowoc Electric Light Company. He has served as alderman and mayor of Manitowoc, and in 1875 and 1876 was sent by his fellow townsmen to the state senate. He married Rosa Stauss, and they had five children: Louis and Edwin, associated with their father in business; Gesine, residing at home with her parents; Lillie, who married Dr. Walker, of Menominee, Michigan; and Rosa, who married Dr. Babcock, of Milwaukee. The reputation of the Manitowoc Savings Bank is of the best, and all of its officials are men of known integrity.
