    Notes:

    Maj. Lewis Burwell II
Hon. Lewis Burwell (1652-~1710) was the son of Maj. Lewis Burwell and Lucy Higginson, born circa 1652. He was married twice, first to Abigail Smith (11 Mar 1656/57 - 12 Nov 1692, cousin of Nathaniel Bacon), daughter of Anthony Smith and Martha Bacon, 1672 at Gloucester Co., Virginia and second to Martha Lear, daughter of Col. John Lear.He resided at King's Creek, York Co., Virginia. He resided at Carter's Creek, Gloucester Co., Virginia. He was a governor of the College of William and Mary in 1702. He was a member of Council between 1702 and 1711 at Virginia. he died circa 1710. He is the namesake of "Burwell's Bay" in Isle of Wight County This bay was originally called Warascoyack Bay until he acquired significant land upon its shores.

The Burwells (known as the Burls among Virginians) were among the First Families of Virginia in the Colony of Virginia. John Quincy Adams once described the Burwells as typical Virginia aristocrats of their period: forthright, bland, somewhat imperious and politically simplistic by Adams' standards. In 1713, so many Burwells had intermarried with the Virginia political elite that Governor Spotswood complained that " the greater part of the present Council are related to the Family of Burwells...there will be no less than seven so near related that they will go off the Bench whenever a Cause of the Burwells come to be tried." The Family was closely associated with the Fairfield Plantation, Gloucester County, Virginia, but several Burwells also built other famous Virginia plantations. Lewis Burwell III built the Kingsmill Plantation's manor house beginning in the 1730s. A few years later, Carter Burwell built Carter's Grove immediately to the east in what became the modern day Grove Community. Several place names such as Burwell's Bay in Isle of Wight County, Virginia are named after the Burwells. Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller, (aka Chesty Puller) is a war hero (from West Point, Virginia) takes his name from three generations of Lewis Burwells who had a large influence on early Virginia. The Burwell family of Virginia originally came from England – Bedfordshire. Their early history is not completely known but by 1607, they were living in Harlington, Bedfordshire, at Harlington House – now known as Harlington Manor.

    Lewis Burwell 1621-1653

    Lewis Burwell 1621-1653

Lewis Burwell was born to Edward and Dorothy (Bedell)Burwell in Harlington,
County Bedford, England. His mother's brothers,Gabriell and John Bedell, were
members of the Virginia Company and came toJamestown with the Second Supply in
    1608.

After the death of his father, his mother had marriedRoger Wingate. In October
1633 Wingate and Edward Kingswell arrived inJamestown aboard the ship Mayflower
with a plan to create a settlement inCarolina. Finding that their promised
transportation to Carolina was notyet available, they remained at Jamestown
through the winter until early springwhen they decided to give up the project.
In March Wingate left with hisfamily and returned to England and Kingswell
followed in June. They shouldhave been more patient, for the promised ship
    arrived in July.

Lewis Burwell arrived at Jamestown about 1640 - a timewhen the original first
generation had failed to carry their leadership over tothe next generation. The
new immigration of 1640, of which Burwell and hisbrothers were a part would give
to Virginia the progenitors of her greateighteenth-century families.

Roger Wingate, Burwell's stepfather, was the residuarylegatee of the land for
which his now deceased partner, Kingwell, had claimed bythe headright system.
Wingate did not immediately claim the land to whichhe was entitled until the
spring of 1648. 2300 acres were granted jointlyto Burwell and Thomas Vause on
the "lower part in Yorke River about 7 miles upthe Narrow on the South side
thereof". In the summer of the same yearBurwell claimed the headrights he
inherited form his stepfather, he received2350 acres "lying upon the North Side
of York River up Rosewell Creek on theSouthward side thereof" for the
transportation of forty-seven persons. This was the largest patent issued in
    1648.

Nevertheless, the estate could not have been so large asto have guaranteed
Burwell and his descendants a position ofundisputed eminence in the colony.
But while everything did notproceed smoothly, he appears to have been a hard
worker who devoted much of hisefforts to the acquisition of land. His
landholdings expandedrapidly, and in 1650, for the transportation of thirty-two
persons, he received1600 acres in Northumberland County "upon the South side of
Potomeck River andEast side of Machotick River". The next day he was alloted
500 acres -this time on the "South side of Potomeck River upon West side of
NomenyRiver". Two years later, in October, 200 acres "100 acres of which
lyeswithin the Pallisade at the Middle plantation...the other with out
thePallisade" were granted to "Major Lewis Burwell and Lucy, his wife".

When he died in 1653, he had been in Virginia for lessthan fifteen years.

    Notes:

A son of William Armistead, of Elizabeth City county, and grandson of Anthony Armistead, of Kirk Deighton, in Yorkshire, England, settled in Gloucester county, of which he was sheriff in 1676, and a justice and lieutenant-colonel of horse in 1680. In 1685 he was a member of the house of burgesses, and on Feb. 14, 1687-88, Gov. Effingham wrote to the English government that a vacancy had occurred in the council and that he had nominated Col. John Armistead as in every way qualified for the place. This nomination was confirmed on April 30, 1688, and Col. Armistead was sworn as member on Oct. 18 of the same year. He remained a councillor until 1691, when, feeling that he could not consistently with the allegiance he had sworn to James II., take the same oath to William and Mary, he declined and was accordingly removed from the council. It is probable that he later realized the hopelessness of the Stuart cause, and relented in his determination, for in 1693 Gov. Andros wrote that Col. John Armistead had retired from the council. He died soon after. He left two sons and two daughters and through them was the ancestor of many distinguished Virginians.; ; III--Colonial Councillors of State

John Armistead was a member of the governor's Council of Virginia late in the seventeenth century. A planter in Gloucester County, he also entered into several successful business ventures. Becoming active in politics, Armistead sat on the county court and served as sheriff. He opposed the tobacco cutting riots and favored English policies put in place after Bacon's Rebellion (1676–1677). Armistead twice represented Gloucester in the House of Burgesses before the governor appointed him to the Council in 1688. Armistead relinquished his seat in 1691 when he refused to take the oaths to the new monarchs William and Mary. Although restored to his place later in the decade, Armistead did not rejoin the Council. His date of death is unknownArmistead was the second of three sons and one of at least four children of William Armistead and Anne Armistead, of Kirk Deighton, Yorkshire, England. He may have been born in Virginia, his parents having settled in Elizabeth City County in the mid-1630s, which is the most likely approximate time of his birth. When he reached adulthood he moved to Gloucester County, where he lived and farmed for the rest of his life. His father had prospered so rapidly after immigrating to Virginia that both of his surviving sons began their adult lives as substantial planters. He may have sent John Armistead to Gloucester County in the 1650s to manage the properties he acquired after that section of the colony was first opened to English settlement.

Sometime in the 1660s Armistead became associated with Robert Beverley (1635–1687), an association that led to several profitable joint business ventures. The relationship grew even closer when Armistead married Beverley's sister-in-law Judith Hone. Armistead had two sons and two daughters, and he acquired even more influential family connections later, when one of his daughters married Ralph Wormeley (d. 1701) and the other married Robert "King" Carter.

Destruction of most of the records of Gloucester County has obscured the details of Armistead's participation in politics. He probably became a vestryman of Kingston Parish within a few years of moving to the county, and by 1670 he was a member of the county court as well as a colonel in the county militia. He became sheriff in 1676 and again in 1680. In 1682 he arrested several local women who were destroying tobacco plants. This put him in opposition to Robert Beverley, the putative instigator of the plant-cutting riots, by which the perpetrators hoped to reduce the supply of tobacco and thereby raise its price. Armistead differed from Beverley on political issues, too. Beverley grew increasingly outspoken in his opposition to English policies designed to control Virginia after Bacon's Rebellion, while Armistead inclined favorably toward the new order.

Armistead served in the House of Burgesses twice. Elected in 1680, he sat at the first meeting of the General Assembly of 1680–1682. His part in suppressing the plant cutters may explain his absence at the second session, and he did not return to the House until 1685. By the mid-1680s he was on friendly terms with Governor Francis Howard, baron Howard of Effingham, who resided at times with Armistead's son-in-law Ralph Wormeley. The association with Effingham proved beneficial, and in 1688 Effingham appointed Armistead to a vacancy on the governor's Council. He was sworn in on October 18, 1688, but his tenure lasted only two and a half years. In April 1691, following the Glorious Revolution, Armistead refused "thro Scruple of Conscience" to swear allegiance to the new monarchs, William and Mary. He consequently lost his seat on the Council. Seven years later the Crown ordered him restored to his place, but Armistead did not take the oaths after the commission was presented to the Council on December 9, 1698.

John Armistead may have been dead by that date, but he could also have been alive and in political retirement in Gloucester County while continuing his refusal to forswear his oath to James II. The date and place of his death are not recorded.

    Dorothy Bedell Burwell Wingate Notes
Dorothy Wingate, widow of Roger Wingate, Esq., gift of the quit rents, remaining due to her husband, to her "only and well beloved son, Lewis Burwell", dated 21st of July, 1648. Visitation of Bedfordshire (pub. by Harleian Society) shows that Edward Burwell's wife was Dorothy, daughter of William Bedell of Catworth, Huntingdonshire, and married, secondly, Roger Wingate, Esq.

Dorothy’s family appears to have been of somewhat more prominence than that of her husbands. Two of her brothers, Gabriell and John Bedell, were members of the Virginia Company and went to Jamestown with the second supply in 1608. Their names are on the Second Charter, May 23, 1609. Gabriell Bedell is listed on a document of 1618/19 as one of the "Adventurers in Virginia", and both brothers are recorded in "A Declaration of the State of the Colony and Affaires in Virginia". Their last appearance in the colonial record is in 1623-1624.

Letters of administration on her husband Edward Burwell's estate were issued to her on November 9, 1626. Dorothy and Edward had two daughters and three sons, and possibly two more sons. Dorothy and Roger had at least one daughter. Dorothy was a widow when she married Roger Wingate.

    Clayton Torrence writes:
"Wingate, with his wife and family, returned to England in March, 1634.
Roger, and his wife Dorothy, returned to Virginia, and he was Treasurer of the Colony from 1639-1641 and member of the Governor's Council, 1639."

Roger Wingate and his wife Dorothy are mentioned in the will of Edward Kingswell, of London, Esquire (dated January 30, 1635/6; proved April 6, 1636), as 'My Brother and sister Mr. Roger Wingate and Dorothie, his wife.'"
ROGER WINGATE: Roger was distinguished for his interest in colonial affairs. He was a partner with Edward Kingswell in a venture to plant a colony in Carolina in 1633. In October that year Kingswell and Wingate, with their families and forty persons, arrived at Jamestown in Virginia, on the way to make a settlement in Carolina, but, as no vessel was there to carry them to their destination, they waited in Virginia until the next spring, when the proposed colony seems to have been abandoned.

The expedition was abandoned and Wingate returned to England in March 1634.
When Kingswell died, his will was proved in 1636, and headrights passed on to Roger Wingate. Roger was made Treasurer of Virginia in 1639. He was a member of the Council.
