    This Indenture made and entered into this 8th day of January 18 hundred and forty one between Abraham Rorer of the County of Caldwell & State of Kentucky, attorney in fact for Sarah Rorer of the first and Reuben Bennett of the County of Pittsylvlvania and State of Virginia of the second part. Witnesseth, That the said Abraham Rorer, attorney as aforsaid in consideration of the sum of six hundred and twelve dollars and fifty cents Lawful money of this Commonwealth, to him in hand paid bby the said Reuben Bennett at or before the unsealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath bargained & sold & by these presents doth bargain and sell unto the said Reuben Bennett his heirs &c forever onone certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Pittsylvania State of Virginia on the waters of Pig river and adjoining the lands of the said Reuben Bennett, Willis Yeatts & others and being the same land drawn by Sarah Rorer in the division of the land whereof Richard Bennett died seized and known and designated as Lot No. 9 in the division of the same, and bounded as follows to Wit; Beginning at corner pointer in the back line N55E 188 poles, thence crossing a branch to corner pine N 67 W 152 poles thence to a corner Maple on the river side thence S 15 W 8 poles thence with the meander of said river S 58 W 44 poles S 15 W 52 poles S 42 W 22 poles thence with the meander of the said river to the beginning. Containing Eighty seven and a half acres be the same more or less. To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land unto him the said Reuben Bennett his heirs & assigns forever and the said Abraham Rorer Attorney as aforesaid for himself & his heirs, the said piece or parcel of land with all and singular the premises and appurtenances unto the said Reuben Bennett his heirs & assigns, free from the claim of him the said Abraham Rorer, Attorney as aforesaid, and of all and every person or persons whatsoever, shall will & doth warrant and forever defend by these presents.     My loving wife Frances Bennett during her life in widowhood all my estate. At her decease all may be sold and the money divided between my children William Bennett, Mary Lawson, Reubin Bennett, Elizabeth Perry, Micajah Bennett, Rachel Bennett, Abner Bennett and Richard Bennett as if her directed Viz. my sons Wm. and Reuben Bennett do discount 30 pounds 10 shillings each from an equal proportion of the money becausethey have already received that sum each in the the land they now live on and all the other named children to receive a just and equall proportion.
    If at any time after my decease my now loving wife should marry my estate may be sold by the discretion of my Executors and the money divided as aforesaid allowing my wife a child's part only. If any time before there be a division of my estate there should be a decease of any of the above named children without being of age or proper heir, my estate may be divided betwixt those that be then living.

Judgment for the plaintiffs against William and Richard Bennett for 38 Lbs 12s, to be discharged by the payment of one half the amount plus interest. (Halifax Co.Plea Book 3, p. 22)

    Notes:

    William was born ca 1698, probably in Sweden. He was brought to America by his parents at about the age of seven and was raised in New Castle County, Delaware. He married Magdalena Petersson, daughter of Peter and Karin Petersson, at Holy Trininity Church in New Castle County, Delaware on April 21, 1720. The Peterssons were a Swedish family. The last record of the William Vardaman family in Delaware is the baptism of a daughter in 1724. William next appears in the Rockfish Gap area on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains in what is now Albemarle County, VA, but was then in Goochland County in 1734. By 1744 he has moved a little further south to the Peaks of Otter area of the Blue Ridge Mountains in what is now Bedford County, VA. In 1744 this area was in Brunswick County and later, in 1746, in Lunenburg County. Bedford County was created out of Lunenburg in 1754. In 1766 William with his second (or possibly third) wife and youngest son, James, relocated to the Dutch Fork area of what is now Newberry County, South Carolina, but was then in Craven County and later included in the judicial division known as Ninety Six District. William purchased 150 acres on the south side of the Enoree River on Indian Creek on 13 Dec 1766. The deed refers to William as a merchant. William died ca 1789 in Newberry County naming his wife Bridgit and four sons John, William, Jr., Peter and James, in order in his will. The first three were probably f from his first wife, Magdalena Petersson, while the last son, James, was probably with his last wife, Bridgit Tinkler. Based on details included in the various biographies of his grandson, Rev. Jeremiah Vardeman of Kentucky and Missouri, William raised a very large family. Since there were only 4 sons, there are likely several daughters. Unfortunately, we know the names of only two: Maria and Jemima. While it can't be proven, there is likely another daughter named Frances who married Peter Bennett. Beyond this we are unable to conjecture with any degree of confidence on the names of any additional daughters.
