LOCATED, on rt. 703( THE IRISH ROAD), west, off rt.29, at Tightsqueeze va, go past Chatham High School about 2 miles. About 1/4 mile past the Concord Methodist Church on left. cemetery is about 200' off road beside old 2 story house. This house is next door to the home of Mr Edward and Clara Shelton, 681 Irish Rd, the current land owners. This land was once owned by Benjamin Riddle and Nancy Giles Riddle (my gggg-grandparents). I feel very certain that my ggg-grandparents are buried here or directly across the road. My ggg-grandfather was , Jesse McNeely, b abt 1800, d 1837. I have that Dinah Tribble was the daughter of James Tribble and ? (perhaps a Collins*). Her father married (2) Nancy (Spurbanks?) on Apr 17, 1802 in Halifax Co, VA. Dinah's siblings were:
    1. Tabitha Tribble - married (1) Thomas Word; (2) Richard Horn (I have more information of this branch)
    2. Isaac Tribble
    3. Ann Tribble
    4. Mary "Polly" Tribble - married Glennis Blankenship
    * I have an old letter from a distant relative that indicates that Tabitha had said her Mother was a "Collins".
I haven't been able to find out if this is correct or not.

    • Residence: 1749, , Lunenburg, Virginia, USA

    Notes:

Joseph Echols (1735-1789) married first Elizabeth King and second in 1772, Elizabeth Street. On 20 September 1751 Joseph and Isaac Echols obtained individual patents to land on Straightstone Creek in Lunenburg County. We presume this was this Joseph Echols and his brother. Joseph's patent was for 400 acres. We speculate that he was the same Joseph Echols who had a patent for 272 acres in Lunenburg County on both sides of Sandy Creek in 1756. A cousin and uncle of the same name were in the area. As Joseph Echols Jr he had a patent for a 13-acre island in the Staunton River 29 November 1756. In 1785 the plantation upon which Joseph lived had nine cabins, including a 640-square foot dwelling and a mill. Ten whites were then in his family. Joseph was dead by 1792, intestate, and the court granted Obediah Echols administration. A chancery suit and the division of land of Joseph Echols in 1794 reveals the names of his surviving 12 children.

1 Obediah Echols married Nanny Franklin in Halifax County 7 September 1805.
    2 Sarah Echols
    3 John Echols
    4 Rhoda Echols
    4 Drusilla Echols
    6 Mary Echols
7 Joseph Echols married Elizabeth Lambeth, a daughter of Meredith Lambeth, in Campbell County 6 June (bond) 1814.
8 Abraham Echols was a resident of Monongalia County, now West Virginia, in 1797 when he sold his inheritance to James Echols of Bedford County.
9 Rebecca Echols was in Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1797 when she sold her inheritance to James Echols.
10 Tabitha Echols married Elijah Lacy in Halifax County 12 January (bond) 1802.
11 David Echols (14 Jan. 1776 - 18 Feb. 1854) married Diana Tribble (14 Jan. 1784 - 12 May 1848), a daughter of James Tribble, in Halifax County 29 May (bond) 1802. They were the parents of eleven children born 1803-1823.
12 Moses Echols married Elizabeth Hicks in Campbell County 9 February (bond) 1807.
13 Judith Echols , a daughter of Joseph Echols, married Benjamin Gosnell in Halifax County 24 March (bond) 1788. She evidently died before the distribution of her father's estate.

They served three years from January 1777 to February 1780, enlisting at Pittsylvania County Courthouse on January 26 1777, and were discharged in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 4, 1780. Robert and his brother, William, were in the same unit throughout their service.

Their unit was at Valley Forge with General Washington during the winter of 1777-1778. They fought in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth.

The records from the National Archives show Sergeant William Devin, with a variety of name variations, to be listed in the muster and pay rolls of Captain Henry Conway's company for most of the period of December 1776 through March 1779. Then, he was part of Captain Nathan Reid's Company and Lieutenant Colonel Hopkins' Company until November 1779. Finally, William Devin and Robert Devin were assigned to Captain John Overton's Company of Col. Febiger's Detachment, 2nd Brigade until they were discharged.

Robert Devin says in his pension application that Captain Henry Conway's company was formed at Smith's Store, then the Pittsylvania County, Virginia Court House. The records show that Sergeant William Devin was sick (June, July, and August 1778 muster rolls) and then, on extended furlough in Virginia beginning in Septermber 1778 to April 1779. This could be the time when William Devin had Smallpox that nearly cost him his life.

Robert Devin was born 6 Apr 1759 in what is now Pittsylvania Co, Virginia. He died 10 Apr 1834 in Pittsylvania Co, Virginia. He married Nancy Parrish 22 Jan 1791 in Pittsylvania Co, Virginia.

    Notes:

    Martha Ellington Motley
Gave up her life for her country
Martha was the wife of Captain Joseph Motley of Amelia and Pittsylvania Counties, Virginia, and was murdered during the Revolution. She refused to divulge to a Tory raiding party the hiding place of supplies which Captain Motley had for the Continental Army, or the whereabouts of her husband.

Martha was alone in the "Old Place" except for servants and the little children at home. She was recuperating in bed from the recent birth of her eleventh child, Elizabeth. She was served by Rachel, a very extraordinary servant who is purported to have been an African Princess. This servant was kidnapped from the rice fields of her homeland by slave traders. The record also states that she spoke a different language from the other servants and wore beautiful flowers tattooed on her breasts. This servant later raised the children who were left orphaned when Martha was murdered.

Present that fateful day were four little girls, daughters of Martha and Joseph. Obedience was eight, Prudence was six, Sally was four and Delilah was two. They were under foot when the party of men on horseback arrived at the front gate to be greeted by Rachel. The spokesman of the group asked to see Captain Motley. When told he was not at home, they demanded to talk to Mrs Motley. Although informed by Rachel that Mrs Motley was ill in bed and could not be disturbed, on the insistence of one of the men, the servant allowed them into the house. Later Rachel disclosed that she recognized one of the men as a neighbor of the Motleys. The party of men hurried past Rachel and the little girls and barged up the stairs to Martha's room. In the excitement of a child's fancy, Obedience ran to see what this was all about, and was present when the neighbor and 'friend' demanded to know where her father and brothers were and where the provisions were kept. She heard her mother refuse to give them any information and saw them take the arm of her mother and (despite Martha's struggles and cries) pierce her arm with a knife and leave her faint and unconscious.

Of the little girls there that day, the baby-in-arms, Elizabeth, lived to adulthood and married Floyd Tanner. Delilah married Benjamin Terry; Sally married Francis Anderson; Prudence married Joshua Stone. They all lived in Pittsylvania County. Obedience married John Morehead of Rockingham County, North Carolina in 1790.

CHAPTER IV A PART OF LUNENBURG COUNTY, 1745-1752

    page 53

There were three very early roads which led across Pittsylvania to the west, known as Hickey's Road, the Irish Road, and the Pigg River Road. Hickey's Road led from a point on Staunton River in northern Halifax to the settlement that had been made at the foot of Wart Mountain in western Patrick, a distance of near 120 miles. The Wart Mountain isnow called Bull's Mountain and lies east of the main range of the [p.53] Blue Ridge, as shown on Jefferson's and Fry's map. Mayo River takes its rise near by and for this reason the settlement was called the Mayo settlement.

Hickey's road was authorized at a court held for Lunenburg in June, 1749:

'It is ordered that a road be laid off and cleared the best and most convenient way from Staunton River to the Mayo Settlement at the Wart Mountain, and it is ordered that Joseph Mayes and all the male Laboring Tithables convenient to the said road forthwith mark off and lay open the best and most convenient way from Staunton River to Allen's Creek and keep the some in repair according to law. [p.54] 'Richard Parsons is appointed surveyor of that part of the New Road leading from Staunton River to the Mayo Settlement at the Wart Mountain, to-wit from Allen's Creek to Banister River.

CHAPTER V A PART OF HALIFAX COUNTY, 1752-1767

    page 62

'The emigrants usually left Pennsylvania in the early fall, after harvest was over, reaching Virginia or North Carolina before hard winter set in. Almost all were farmers, but were artisans as well, making almost everying they needed. The Germans were industrious and economical;the Scotch-Irish, ambitious, alert and grasping.' These upper inhabitants of Halifax had increased in numbers until now they began to petition for more roads. In March,19 I753, Richard Parsons and William Adkins were ordered to mark a road from the mouth of Snow Creek to Hickey's Road. In July the inhabitants on Pigg River and Snow Creek (Franklin County) petitioned for a road from the uppermost of the inhabitantsto the Snow Creek Road, and Thomas Hall and William Hill were orderedto lay off the road. The following year the same inhabitants begged that the road laid off by Hall and Hill be extended to the top of the Blue Ridge, which was accordingly ordered, with Tully Choice as surveyor. This road led across Franklin County to the mountains.

"Richard Parsons is appointed surveyor of that part of the New Road leading from Staunton River to the Mayo Settlement at the Wart Mountain, to-wit from Allen's Creek to Banister River."
"This road led from a point on Staunton River in Northern Halifax, by Mount Airy, Chalk Level and Chatham, crossing Banister River near the Poor Farm, and turning west led across Henry and Patrick counties. The eastern part of this road continues a well known highway today. It took its name from John Hickey, who had made a settlement and opened a store near its western limits."

"These upper inhabitants of Halifax had increased in numbers until now thay began to petition for more roads. In March, 1753, Richard Parsons and William Adkins were ordered to mark a road from the m outh of Snow Creek to Hickey's Road. In July the inhabitants on Pigg River and Snow Creek (Franklin County) petitioned for a road from the uppermost of the inhabitants to the Snow Creek Road, and Th omas Hall and William Hill were ordered to lay off the road. The following year the same inhabitants begged that the road laid off by Hall and Hill be extended to the top of the Blue Ridge, which wa s accordingly ordered, with Tully Choice as surveyor. This road led across Franklin County to the mountains."

Richard Parsons is the son of Joseph Parsons and Sarah Woodson. He was born before 1714 in either Henrico County, Virginia. His will was written on December 22, 1783 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and his estate was probated there on February 21, 1785.

Lydia Briggs was the daughter of Ralph Briggs and Elizabeth Mary Wright and brother of George Briggs. She was born in 1720 in Goochland County, Virginia. She died in Pittsylvania County Virginia in 1787.
John Wright (probably an uncle) was appointed as her guardian after both of her parents died (I do not have this date). John Wright died between March 14, 1729/30 and May 1730 at which time her brother George must have been of age, and become her guardian, because when George died in June of 1734, Lydia chose a new guardian, Richard Parsons. Hence, George must have been her guardian at the time. Lydia also inherited 400 acres of land from George on the south side of the James River along Muddy Creek.

Richard and Lydia were married in 1740 in Goochland County, Virginia. They had the following children, all born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia:

    Joseph (abt 1742 - 13 Aug 1833) m1. bef 1764, Margaret "Peggy" Griffith; m2. 26 Aug 1824, Sarah "Sally" Thompson
    Mary Agnes (abt 1744 - ) m. 1760, John Midkiff, Sr.
    Hannah (abt 1746 - ) m. Joseph Midkiff, Sr.
    George (abt 1750 - 16 Jun 1846) m1. Anne Griffith, m2. Sarah Hardin
    Samuel (abt 1752 - 1819) m. 21 Dec 1779, Rebecca Farthing
    James (1753 - )
    William (abt 1756 - 16 Mar 1818) m. Mary Blanks
    Richard (1758 - )
    Lydia (1760 - Aft 1805) m. 1775 Stephen Yates, Sr.
    John (abt 1762 - d. 20 Jun 1808) m1. Mary Simmons, m2. bef 1784, Sarah (Sary) Adkins

The Richard Parsons who married Lydia Briggs is documented from 1735 to about 1745 in Goochland County, Virginia. The Richard of Lunenburg/Halifax/Pittsylvania County is documented from 1748 to his death around 1785. He died testate in Pittsylvania County, Virginia naming his children and mentioning his wife only as 'my wife'. So far, I have not found a document that states Richard of Goochland and Richard of Pittsylvania are the same Richard. However, Richard sold his land in Goochland County and then a Richard appears in Lunenburg/Pittsylvania County shortly thereafter. Also, Christopher Parsons also appears in court records in Goochland and then appears in Lunenburg in the same year as Richard, as well as some other Pittsylvania families. The Richard Parsons of Surry County, North Carolina was married Elizabeth Feathers. He died 30 years after the Richard of Pittsylvania County also leaving a will. There is no documentation that links the two.

In August of 1734, Lydia Briggs, both her parents having previously died, was permitted to choose Richard Parsons her guardian. This indicates that she was a minor and he was at least 21 years of age.

On January 30, 1741, Richard Parsons patented 80 acres on the branches of the North Branch of Muddy Creek (alias Little Muddy Creek) in Goochland County, Virginia. [Library of Virginia, Digital Collection, Patents 20, 1741-43, P. 129].

On January 16, 1743 from Robert Yancey of the Parish of St. Martin and County of Louisa sold to Francis Amoss of the Parish of St. James and Goochland, 400 acres on the south side of James River in the Parish of St. James and Goochland, that was bounded by Richard Parsons

On April 22, 1743 Richard Parsons of Goochland County, Virginia, sold to Nicholas Spears 80 acres on Muddy Creek on the south side of James River for 5 pounds.

On August 13, 1743 Richard and Lydia Parsons of Goochland County, Virginia, sold to Nicholas Davies 200 acres on Muddy Creek on the south side of James River for 20 pounds. This is the first mention of his wife.

On December 17, 1743 Richard and Lydia Parsons of the Parish of St. James and Goochland sold to John Alexander 200 acres on the south side James River on the west side Muddy Creek for 70 pounds. [Goochland County Deeds, Virginia Deeds, 1741-1745, Deed Book 4, Page 346]

Lydia's brother George Briggs was first granted the above 400 acres in 1733. George died about 1634 and Lydia inherited the land.

On February 25, 1744 Francis Amoss of Goochland and Parish of Southam sold to Richard Ligon 400 acres on both sides of the upper branch of Muddy Creek alias Little Muddy Creek, and bounded by Richard Parsons.

On November 20, 1745, Richard Parsons is mentioned []Goochland County, Virginia 1741-1745, Deed Book 4].

On March 7, 1747, Richard is granted 400 acres on both sides of Great Cherrystone Creek in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

On Noveber 2, 1748, Richard is granted an additional 400 acres in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, adjoining his other lands.

On June 14, 1749, Richard Pasrons is grated 2000 acres on Mill Creek in Virginia.

In June of 1749 Richard Parsons was appointed as surveyor of the new road between Staunton River and the Mayo Settlement at the Wart Mountain in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

In July of 1752, Richard sells land to John Watson in Halifax County, Virginia.

Between 1752 and 1755, Richard Parsons is granted permission to construct a grist mill on Cherry Creek in Halifax County, Virginia.

In March of 1753, as surveyor, he was ordered to mark a road from the mouth of Snow Creek to Hickey's Road in the same county.

On March 20, 1760 is in Halifax County, Virginia.

In a deed recorded in Halifax County, Virginia, April 19, 1764, Richard Parsons sells his son Joseph Parsons 100 acres of land for 10 pounds [Halifax County Deed Books 2-6, compiled by Marian Dodson Chiarito] .

On May 14, 1764, Richard Parsons sold to his son George Parsons, both of Halifax County, Virginia, for 10 pounds, 100 acres on the south side of Little Cherrystone Creek, being the land that George was living on at the time. It was recorded June 21, 1764

In 1765, Richard and George Parsons were listed in the Halifax Voters List. [Halifax County, Virginia Deed Books]

On June 10, 1767, Richard (Persons) and his son Joseph are named for Cambden Parish in Pittsylvania County's first list of Tithables (The History of Pittsylvania County, Viginia, by Maud Carter Clement. Reprinted by The Pittsylvania Historical Society, 1988, page 278).

In 1767, Richard Parsons, as surveyor, was ordered to mark the road from mouth of Snow Creek to Hickey's Road (in Franklin Co) [Halifax County, Virginia Deed Books]

In 1768, George Parsons was in Antrim Parish [Halifax County, Virginia Deed Books]

On July 29, 1768, Francis Bucknal was granted a patent in Pittsylvania County for 238 acres on both sides of Great Cherry stone Creek adjoining Parson's Land. [Land Office Patents No. 37, 1767-1768, p. 243 (Reel 37), Virginia State Land Office. Patents 1-42, reels 1-41].

In 1771, Richard Parsons is found in the Pittsylvania County Court Order Records [Halifax County, Virginia Deed Books]

On August 3, 1771, John Hicks was granted a patent in Pittsylvania County for 400 acres on the branches of Little Cherrystone Creek adjoining Richard Parsons. [Land Office Patents No. 40, 1771-1772, p. 516 (Reel 39), Virginia State Land Office. Patents 1-42, reels 1-41].

In May of 1777, Richard signed the Oath of Allegiance in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

In 1782, Richard and his sons, William, Samuel, John, Joseph and George are named in the Pittsylvania County Census. Richard had 5 persons. [Halifax County, Virginia Deed Books]

On December 22, 1783, Richard and Lydia according to his will, are living with their daughter Lydia Yates and her husband Stephen Yates. Stephen ran the Old Yates Tavern in Gretna, Virginia. (The old Yates Tavern still stands today about ten miles from town.)

In the Pittsylvania County, Virginia Deed and Will Book #11, p. 159, probably February 21, 1785, Richard Parsons' will is recorded.

William C Burgess listed as a researcher of this line

Lydia Briggs--She had a brother named George Briggs who had given Lydia 400 acres of land on the south side of the James River. This was sometime between 1733 date of the patent to George Briggs and 1743, when Richard and Lydia sold 200 acres of the 400 to a John Alexander. (Goochland Co, Virginia Deeds 1741-1745)

After her parents died, Lydia chose John Wright as her guardian. He died in Goochland Co. Lydia's brother George, chose Robert Hughes.

In the will of Lt. Col. George Jordan, dated May 28, 1671, he gives to "George Briggs, alsoe God-Children, each a silver soon, worth ten shillings." I have a George Briggs with sister Lydia in Goochland County in 1733 when he patented land. George died abt. 1734 when his will was presented in court and Lydia, the executrix, was allowed to choose Richard Parsons as her guardian, because she was not of age.

Also wonder about Lydia Briggs. It appears she starts out with John Wright as her guardian, but shifts to Richard Parsons later. Her brother makes a move as well, which I suppose indicates the death of John Wright. Do you have a copy of his will you could share online?? 1730 John Wright of Goochland County, Virginia, died between March 14, 1729/30 and May 1730. That would have clearly necessitated the appointment of a new guardian for Lydia Briggs.

Per comments that I have read, Joseph Parsons of Henrico County, Va, did NOT mention a son named Richard in his LWT. so unlikely Joseph was Richard’s father.

JEAN Thomas From what I read it said that Richard was Joseph father.

In 1782, Richard and his sons, William, Samuel, John, Joseph and George are named in the Pittsylvania County Census. Richard had 5 persons. [Halifax County, Virginia Deed Books]her.

    Notes:

Yates Tavern is located 1/4 mile South of Gretna, Va. === Yates Tavern is the only block-house standing in Pittsylvania County, Va. and possibly the state. It is located on U.S. 29 business about a fourth of a mile south of Gretna. It was built around 1750 and sheltered travelers in what was then a western wilderness. It is said to be the only dwelling in Virginia constructed with Elizabethan or Tudor over-hangs or front and back jetties. It is deemed a blockhouse because of the 10-inch overhang of the second story. Indian campgrounds were mentioned in deeds on Potter's and Reddies' creeks a few miles away. Saponi Town, near Altavista, was only about 12 miles away. The Yates family came to Pittsylvania County earlier than 1767 when both John Yates and John Yates Jr. were listed among the first tithables. It is not clear which of the Yates family members built the tavern. According to 18th Century Landmarks of Pittsylvania County by Madalene Vaden Fitzgerald and Frances Hallam Hurt, Stephen Yates paid a tax of $8.50 in 1813 to keep an ordinary at his house. In 1818, Yates paid the sum of $1.67 tax and a license was granted him "to keep a house of private entertainment where he now resides." The house is made from weather-boarding and has a rock chimney. There is a large public room with a rock fire-place beneath an impressive mantel. A smaller adjoining main floor room has an under the staircase closet. The corner stairway leads to a two-roomed loft upstairs. The English basement, half in and half out of the ground, has walls two-feet thick. It was in the enormous basement fireplace that meals were prepared. There is trap door access from the main floor into the basement. One of the first acts of the Gentlemen Justices in 1767 was to set prices for liquors and lodging. Overnight lodging with breakfast or dinner was six shillings, with the same for a horse. Brandy was eight shillings a gallon; whiskey, six; West India rum, 10; with Virginia beer and cider going for two shillings, six pence. Near the tavern was Pigg River Road which ran from Peytonsburg to Smith Mountain and from which Yates Tavern drew its customers. Several members of the Yates family are buried in a nearby cemetery. The tavern was restored through grants from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Virginia Landmarks, Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors and the late DeWitt Wallace of Reader's Digest.

THREE LIPFORD BRIDES FOR THREE YATES BROTHERSJohn Yeardley Yates, William D. Yates, and Byrd R. Yates were sons of Samuel Yates and Mary (Polly) Davis Yates. They were grandsons of Stephen Yates and Lydia Parsons Yates, all of Pittsylvania County. Elizabeth Feline Lipford , Mary B. Lipford, and Julia R. Lipford were all granddaughters of Anthony Par Lipford and Elizabeth Robinson Lipford. John Yeardley Yates, born January 1, 1807 in Pittsylvania County, married Elizabeth Feline Lipford on December 16, 1825. Elizabeth, born December 1, 1814 in Pittsylvania County, was the daughter of Daniel Lipford and Elizabeth (Betsey) Robertson Lipford. Her grandfather Anthony Par Lipford was bondsman for her marriage to John. John Yeardley Yates and Elizabeth Feline Lipford Yates had thirteen children: William Anthony Yates, Henry Fleming Yates, George Washington Yates, Richard Davis Yates, Susan Jane Yates, Beverly Arnold Yates, Ferdinand N. Yates, Thomas Monroe Yates, Hartwell F. Yates, Elvira A. Yates, Mary Elizabeth Yates, John David Yates and James B. Yates. The family was living in Pittsylvania County in 1850 and by 1860 they had moved to Patrick County. John Yeardley Yates was listed on the Muster Roll of the 53rd Regiment of Pickett's Division during the Civil War, and five of his sons served in the war. Shortly after 1870 the family moved to Floyd County, where John died on February 16, 1882, and Elizabeth died on March 24, 1908. They are both buried in the Yates Cemetery. William D. Yates, born April 20, 1813 in Pittsylvania County, married Mary B. Lipford on November 20, 1838 in the county. Mary was born 1823, the daughter of Amos Lipford (who consented to the marriage) and his wife Elizabeth Frizzell Lipford, and the granddaughter of Anthony Par Lipford. William and Mary had eight children: Margaret F. Yates, Abram Yates, Eliza Virginia (Jenny) Yates, Rebecca Jane Yates, Isaac Anthony Yates, Jacob Thomas Yates, Benjamin G. Yates, and Sybil William (Sibby) Yates. William inherited Yates Tavern, located ¼ mile south of Gretna, from his father Samuel Yates in 1840 (Pittsylvania County Deed Book 44, page 157). William D. Yates died about 1864 in Gretna. After the death of her first husband, Mary B. Lipford Yates married William S. Yates, son of William Thomas Yates and Mary (Polly) Shelhorse Yates. Mary B. Lipford Yates died June 1873 in Gretna and her second husband William S. Yates died August 1873. Byrd R. Yates, born about 1823 in Pittsylvania County, married Julia R. Lipford October 27, 1842. Julia was the daughter of Amos Lipford and Elizabeth Frizzell and also the granddaughter of Anthony Par Lipford. Julia and Byrd had two children: Elizabeth Ann (Bettie) Yates and James Yates. Julia died 1846-1847 in Pittsylvania County. After Julia's death, Byrd married Perninah "Nina" Keesee. Byrd R. Yates died December 1, 1860 in the county.

In 1815, with his son Samuel, Stephen Yeatts took out a license to operate an ordinary (an early American term for a bar or tavern) at the Yates Tavern (see notes below), in Gretna, Virginia. In the feverish days of 1777, Stephen took the oath of allegiance to the new country and against the King from Abraham Shelton. The Yates Tavern, called the only building of its kind in Virginia by the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission, is unique for its jetties. These are second-floor protrusions of some 10 inches giving a bit more space in the upper floor. This little building, constructed in the mid-1700's, was home to several generations of the Yates family, who also from time to time took out licenses to operate an "ordinary," a sort of frontier bed-and-breakfast. It was strategically located along the old Pigg River Road and only a few miles from Hickey's Road, the first major road
penetrating this part of western Virginia from the east. It is likely to have been an especially convenient stop during the Revolutionary War days, at which time Peytonsburg (14 miles to the southeast) was one of nine busy supply depots in Virginia.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: 1782, , Halifax, Virginia, USA

    Notes:

Moza Hurt moved from Caroline County, Va. to the part of Bedford County, Va. that was created from Bedford County and made into Campbell County in 1781. This move was before July 1768. He moved across the Staunton River into Halifax County, Va. between 1780 and 1782 and died there in 1793.

His will dated 12-15-1791, probated on 1-28-1793 and recorded in Halifax County, Va. in Will Book 3, page 35, names seven children, all by his first wife, Mary.

Moza Hurt (also known as Moses) was born in 1730 probably in or near Bedford County, Virginia. A number of records exist pertaining to his life. His land deeds, marriage records, and will, as well as records of his children?s marriages, are all preserved. He held substantial amounts of land in three counties: Bedford, Halifax, and Caroline, and he bought and sold land all his life. He acquired land on the Rappahannock River, where he lived in St. Margaret's Parish in Caroline County. He was appointed Constable there in 1752. From 1755 to 1758 he was road-overseer. He married a young lady named Mary (last name unknown) by 1758. They had seven children: Philemon, born 1758; Jane, Betty, Sarah Ellen, born by 1763; James, born 1763; and twins Patience and Prudence, born by 1774. In 1763, at the urging of his wife, Moza gave some slaves to his then four children: Philemon, Jane, Bettey, and Sarah. Why he did this, and why young children needed slaves of their own, is unknown. In 1776, the family moved to Bedford County (cut from Lunenburg County in 1753) where they bought 284 acres of land.
The Hurts fought with the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. It doesn't look like Moza fought, but he did supply aid to the Continental Army. The Bedford County Lists of publick claims filed by citizens lists Moza Hurt being returned provisions that had been collected in 1781 by Christopher Irvine. A Moses Hurt was recorded as having supplied 1 beef, 9 diets, 4 pecks corn. A Mosses Hurt supplied 2 diets and 2 pecks of corn. In 1782, a new county, Campbell, was cut from Bedford County, where the Hurts had been living. Sometime by 1782, Moza's wife, Mary, died, and he moved to Halifax County (cut from Lunenburg County in 1752), not necessarily in that order. Three and one half months before his second marriage, Moza persuaded his children to file a disclaimer to the slaves given them by Deed of Gift about 1763 in Caroline County. He then married Phebe Vaden, daughter of William Vaden and Frances Wilson, on April 10, 1782. She was the widow of Robert Mann who had died of smallpox.

The 1782 Heads of Households Census from Halifax County, Virginia, lists Moza Hurt with fourteen whites and nineteen blacks in the household.

The 1785 Heads of Families Census from Halifax County, Virginia, lists Moza Hurt with eight whites, one dwelling, and eight other buildings.

Moza died 1793 in Halifax County. His sons, James and Philemon, were the executors of his will. Phebe died two years later in 1795. His will read:
    Sons Philemon and James, Executors.
To my son James Hurt, land whereon he now lives in Campbell County Virginia 617 acres
To my daughters: Patience and Prudence Hurt

Children of Moza and Mary Hurt
James Hurt was born in 1763 in Caroline or Campbell County. He married his stepsister, Agnes Mann Harrison, daughter of Robert and Phebe Mann, and widow of Peterson Harrison, on June 10, 1782. He died in Campbell County in 1819.

Jane died by January 5, 1782, before Moza, married John Adams.

Elizabeth (Betty) and Sarah apparently were not taught to write because they did not sign their names on official documents, but simply made their marks.

    Betty married Michael Prewitt, Jr.

Sarah Ellen married Byrd Prewitt. Her father signed his consent in February, 1782.

Patience married Samuel Hubbard in 1791. I don?t have any info on Prudence. Since Patience married in 1791, and had to be at least 17 years old to do so, she must have been born by 1774.

Philemon was born on October 6, 1758 in Caroline County, Virginia.

    Notes:

William's family was said to be of Huguenot descent (French Protestants who were driven out of France in 1680 due to the Edict of Nantes). Devin is probably French--meaning sage, seer, foreteller of events. Surnames were adopted after 1000 AD in Europe and so our Devin ancestor was probably "le devin" (the seer) and the "le" was probably omitted with time. There were many Devins who did not leave France in 1680 and stayed Catholic. Some of these Catholic Devins came to Canada and there are many Devins in Canada today.

The Progenitor of the Devin Family in America was William Devin, Sr. William Devin Sr. came to America in 1745 or 1746 and in 1750 married Sarah Smith, and settled in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. They were members of the Presbyterian Church and accumulated some wealth. They had eleven children some dying in childhood. William Sr. named some of his children in his will recorded April 19,1802.

WILL-DEED AND WILL BOOK 11, PAGE 243, PITTSYLVANIA CO., VIRGINIA RECORDED APRIL 19, 1802
"In the name of God Amen, I, William Devin Sr.--of the County of Pittsylvania, in good health and of sound mind and memory for which I thank God; and calling to mind the mortality of man, knowing it is appointed of God for all men once to die, do make constitute and ordain this, my last Will and Testament--I first of all give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it me and my body to be decently intered at the discretion of my Executor and to such worldy Estate as it has pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give and dispose of in manner and form following, that is first of all my just Debts--to be honestly paid. Secondly, I give to my children, James Devin, Mary Biggar, William Devin Jr., Robert Devin, and Joseph Devin--twenty shillings to each of them, their heirs or assigns forever. Third, I give to my daughter Sarah Devin, the house in which I now live after being well covered out of money arising out of my estate and the land adjoining thereto and bounded as follows, by William Devin Jr. lines on the south, by Joseph Devin and Spragin on the east, by Robert Devin on the north, and by Wimbish and Spurling on the west to inclose part of my new survey agreeable to Robert Devin's marked line
for dividing the said survey. I also give said Sarah, one negro boy, Alleck, one mare Finnex, or her value in cash, or another creature of near equal value, one cow and calf, exclusive of a white cow I admit to be her own property, one bed and furniture of her choice and half of all the other of my household furniture; one ewe and lamb, if any belonging to my estate, and lastly two sows and pigs, the choice of my stock and provisions of every kind that I may die possessed of for her and those free persons that I may leave in my family at my death for one year after. My further will is that if my daughter Sarah Devin should die without lawful heir of her body that in that case she has a right only to dispose of half the property to her given as she may think proper, and the other half my will is that it may be equally divided between all my surviving children or their lawfully begotten heirs of any they have or assigns forever. Item--I give to the children of my daughter Margaret Reynolds--twenty pounds cash to be under the direction of their father, Joseph Reynolds for the use of the said children that may live to enjoy it. And my further will is that all the land and negroes I may be possessed of at my death with all and every kind of property to me belonging not before in this last will given shall be sold my Executor at one years credit and the money arising therefrom after all legal and lawful expenses are paid for the execution of the will, the surplus if any, to be divided equally between my children as follows to wit--William Devin Jr., Mary Biggar, Robert Devin, the children of Margaret Reynolds (deceased) Sarah Devin and Joseph Devin, their heirs or assigns forever....."

From the Pittsylvania Co., Virginia Courthouse records, the following items: "William Devin Sr. to William Devin Jr. a deed February 17,1794"

"William Devin Sr. listed as head of family 1785"

    MILITARY RECORDS
William Devin Sr. war services: War records no. 4 p. 166: "received a certificate for balance of full pay, according to act passed November session 1781, as Sergeant of Infantry...Virginia Continental Line."

The Devin property in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia is shown by deeds and records to be near the Sandy River, S.W. corner of Pittsylvania Co., N.W. of Danville and east of Martinville, Virginia. Pittsylvania Co. was formed in 1767 from Halifax Co., absorbed Patrick Co. and Herry Co. in 1777. In 1753 Halifax Co. was part of Lunenburg Co.

In records, various spellings of the Devin name is given...Davin, Deaven, Divean, Diven, and Divin. William Devin and his son, William Devin, Jr., took turns serving in the Military and sometimes only for three-month periods between farm work on their acreage, the military archives does not have any distinction between them, as all the records are just under
"William Devin". His first four sons were in the Revolutionary War.

William married Sarah Smith in 1750 in Chatham, Pittsylvania, Virginia, USA. Sarah (daughter of Capt. Thomas Smith) was born on 20 Mar 1728 in , Pittsylvania, Virginia, USA; died on 22 Nov 1800 in , Pittsylvania, Virginia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  30. 61.  Sarah Smith was born on 20 Mar 1728 in , Pittsylvania, Virginia, USA (daughter of Capt. Thomas Smith); died on 22 Nov 1800 in , Pittsylvania, Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

"Not named in the will of her husband which was dated 25 November 1800. Dessa's booklet mentions a letter to Alfred Harrison Devin written b Rev. Robert Ira Devin son of James, son of William Jr., son of William Sr. The letter is said to make the following statement: "Records of the Parish of Camden: Sarah Devin born March 20, 1728". "

"William Devin, Senior is considered to be the Progenitor of the protestant Devin family in the United States of America. William Devin, Senior of Virginia was born in Dublin, Ireland and came to America in 1745 or 1746. In 1750, he married Sarah Smith and settled in what is now Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
    --The Devin Family, page 1.

A William Davin along with son James Davin is listed in the 1767 list of Tithables for Pittsylvania County, Virginia Colony.

Like many landowners of the era and region, William Devin Senior owned slaves. His will states that he owned at least one male slave, named Alleck, which he bequeathed to his daughter Sarah Devin.
    -The Devin Family, page 2.

William Sr. served as Sergeant of Infantry, Virginia Continental Line. He "received a certificate for balance of full pay, according to act passed November session 1781". [more likely this was his son William Jr.]

Robert Devin, Joseph Devin, heirs of Margaret Reynolds, decd.

Dessa's booklet mentions a letter to Alfred Harrison Devin written by Rev. Robert Ira Devin son of James, son of William Jr, son of William Sr. The letter is said to make the following statements: 'William Devin born 1724.'"

These statements may be accurate, but Dessa's booklet, as written, seems to relate that these records have Irish origins. There is a Camden Parish in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. If the referenced records are from the Virginia parish, why do they mention the marriage of William and Martha Devin? Is the Sarah Devin mentioned in the records actually William Sr.'s spouse rather than his sister? Another theory is that the William and Martha Devin mentioned in the parish of Camden records is William Devin and Martha Mitchell and the 2 in 1720 is actually an eight.
