    Notes:

Richard E. Moore was an inventor and pioneering engineer in rotorcraft technology. Moore's aviation career spanned nearly 50 years with McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company and its predecessors; Hughes Helicopter, Inc. and the Aircraft Division of Hughes Tool Company; General Motors Corporation; Gates Lear jet Corporation, and as a rotorcraft consultant to the US Army.
Moore was a 1942 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and finishing his studies in the top 10 percent of his class. He joined the Aircraft Division of Hughes Tool Company in 1952 but left the company in 1968 to work on the design of a new twin-engine helicopter being developed by Gates Learjet Corporation. When the project was cancelled, he worked for the US Army as a consultant. Moore rejoined the company in 1972.
He was instrumental late in his career in planning the transition of McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company's research and development facilities into an industry leading position. His studies or research, engineering and test laboratories throughout the aerospace industry led to the development of the company's year old Advanced Development Center, a 300,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility dedicated to adavanced rotorcraft technology.
Moore received a patent in 1986 for his work on helicopter transmission systems that allow variations in main and tail rotor speeds. He was chairman of the company's patent committee.
"Thanks to Dick Moore, the center's capabilities are unmatched in the helicopter industry," said Norm Hirsh, executive vice president of MDHC and AHS Board Chairman.
"He was the principle designer of the drive system for the OH-6," said Hirsh. "His designs have stood the test of time and have been adapted to all succeeding MD 500 series helicopters."
"Dick Moore was a valuable asset to this company for more than 30 years," Hirs said. "He also contributed measurably to the industry through his contributions to the design of helicopters and through his constant search for safer rotorcraft flight."

Richard Moore died on September 12, 1987. He was 68.

Obituary from Western Union employee newsletter.
Minneapolis, Assembly No 88 - Reed D Smith
Born at Adrian, Mich, Jan. 31, 1851. Died at Minneapolis, Minn, Nov 3, 1922. This office was shocked by the sudden death of Reed D Smith, assistant early night testing and regulating chief, and one of the oldest employees in the service. Mr Smith worked up to Thursday, the day preceding his death, he complaining of not feeling well Thursday evening and went home early. On Friday morning he passed away suddenly due to heart failure. Mr Smith was 71 years old at the time of his death and held the positions of night chief operator and early night assistant testing and regulating chief for 34 years in the Minneapolis office, the latter position being held by him the past five years. He entered the service of the Western Union at the age of 21 years and worked in several small offices in the vicinity of Adrian, Mich, later being transferred to Elkhart, Ind, Chicago, Ill, Sparta, Wis, Sioux Falls, S Dak, and finally Minneapolis, where he rendered long and faithful service in the T and R department. Many of the oldtimers can recall many instances where he remained on duty indefinitely and came to the office at any hour of the night when severe storms ranging from blizzards to tornadoes wrought havoc to the wires. "SM," as he was popularly known, was known by the entire telegraph fraternity of the northwest, who will miss him and mourn his loss. Funeral services were held at 2pm, Monday, November 6, at Lakewood chapel, interment being at Lakewood cemetery. All members of the Association of Western Union employees and the telegraph fraternity as a whole extend their heartfelt sympathy to the family in their bereavement.

    Notes:

Brothers George and Calvin Moore appear to have run most of the family livery business during the Civil War. In the early part of the war George and Thornton stayed in Danville. Calvin came home from the war in June 1863. Both George and Calvin conducted extensive transactions related to the business. Calvin appears to have worked mainly as a stage driver, while George traded, boarded, and rented horses. He owned a number of wagons, carriages, and buggies as well. Since they were in Danville, a good amount of livery and stage business was conducted with the Confederate Army. Surviving Confederate invoices are either signed by or refer to Major William T Sutherlin, the Army's Quartermaster in Danville during the war. After the fall of Richmond the government relocated to Danville. Sutherlin opened his home to Davis and his cabinet during the week which led to Appomattox. Danville became known as the Last Capital of the Confederacy.

The entire family, including 7 brothers and their families, worked the livery as of the 1860 census. 5 of the 7 brothers enlisted in the 18th Virginia Infantry Regiment on April 23, 1861.

    MADS ORNES
Sudden death during the night from Saturday to Sunday took the life of Mads Ornes, a well-known resident of our city. Ornes, who had suffered with rheumatism for a long time but did not let it lower his spirits, went to bed Saturday evening but was unable to sleep and was still awake at midnight. The death must have come shortly thereafter. No one in his family had any warning of his passing until they tried to wake him Sunday morning. Ornes, who was born in Norway, came to Manitowoc in 1870 and has resided here ever since. He was 70 years of age and is survived by his sorrowing widow and 4 children. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon.

Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, August 19, 1907 P1
    DEATH CAME WITH NO WARNING
Mads Ornes, Aged Resident of the City, Dies During Night's Sleep. Death's summons was unexpected and came suddenly and without warning to Mads Ornes, one of the city's best known residents, who was found dead in bed Sunday morning by members of the family. Mr. Ornes whose family home is on N. Tenth street, had retired early Saturday evening but had been unable to sleep and at midnight he was awake. Death must have occurred sometime after that hour, and was not discovered until the family called him for the morning. Mr Ornes had been a sufferer from rheumatism for some time and while his condition was not serious there has always been the danger that the heart might be affected, and this is what resulted and caused death. Mr Ornes was a native of Norway and was married there 50 years ago, the golden wedding celebration having been held Feb 19, this year.
Coming here in 1870, Mr Ornes was for years engaged as a ship carpenter and was well known. Mrs Ornes and four children survive, being Mrs C Pugh, Catherine and John, of Minneapolis and Fred of Mt Vernon, Wash. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from the late home to the First Norwegian Lutheran church, 8th and State street and interrment (sic) will be at Evergreen.

    DIED
In this village on the 26 of Oct., 1864(sic), Mr. George Beers(sic), aged 42 years. The large concourse of people which followed the remains of Mr. Beers to the grave, was ample testimony of the esteem in which our citizens hold him. As a businessman, he was honest and upright and as a neighbor and friend, he was kind and amiable. An eloquent tribute was paid him at the grave by Adolph Wittmann, Esq., in a feeling address, which touched the hearts of all his hearers.

LOCATED, on rt. 703( THE IRISH ROAD), west, off rt.29, at Tightsqueeze va, go past Chatham High School about 2 miles. About 1/4 mile past the Concord Methodist Church on left. cemetery is about 200' off road beside old 2 story house. This house is next door to the home of Mr Edward and Clara Shelton, 681 Irish Rd, the current land owners. This land was once owned by Benjamin Riddle and Nancy Giles Riddle (my gggg-grandparents). I feel very certain that my ggg-grandparents are buried here or directly across the road. My ggg-grandfather was , Jesse McNeely, b abt 1800, d 1837. His wife was Francis (Fannie) Riddle McNeely (daughter of Benjamin and Nancy Riddle), b abt 1794, d Jan 1823 (at child-birth). I believe that Benjamin and Nancy Riddle and their son Rueben Riddle are buried here too. They all were living here at the time of their deaths. The farm was sold to a Mr Anthony after Rueben died. Anthony was a minister at the OLD BANNISTER RIVER BAPTIST CH, which was about was about 1/2 mile farther down the road, just past the river, on north side of road.

I have that Dinah Tribble was the daughter of James Tribble and ? (perhaps a Collins*). Her father married (2) Nancy (Spurbanks?) on Apr 17, 1802 in Halifax Co, VA. Dinah's siblings were:
    1. Tabitha Tribble - married (1) Thomas Word; (2) Richard Horn (I have more information of this branch)
    2. Isaac Tribble
    3. Ann Tribble
    4. Mary "Polly" Tribble - married Glennis Blankenship
    * I have an old letter from a distant relative that indicates that Tabitha had said her Mother was a "Collins".
I haven't been able to find out if this is correct or not.

    Notes:

Johannes appears to have started the shipbuilding at Haagenvik. The Haagenvik property was situated on the fjord, in an ideal place to build and launch large boats. He took over the ownership of the property from his father-in-law Frederick Stockfleth von Krogh. Frederick and his wife had 7 daughters and no son to inherit the estate. At that time it was not possible for a female to inherit the assets of one's father. Since Catherine was the oldest of his daughters, her husband became the legal successor. Johannes came from a family rich in sailing and shipbuilding tradition, and Haagenvik, with its direct access to the fjord, was a perfect place to build and launch ships. After this transfer, the name von Krogh dropped from association with the Haagenvik property.

Thus the old officer farm became property of the Magnus family. The shipyard delivered its first vessel in 1852. At the time, Johannes Magnus lived in Hogganvik. He was a strong fellow from what is told about him. He was 6 feet and 6 inches tall. One time, some lumber had been ordered from Dokskar, and it was brought to Hogganvik as a raft. Johannes Magnus was not satisfied with the lumber. "What kind of material is it that you are bringing? It is nothing but garbage" he said with a thundering voice. The man from Dokskar got upset and said that if Johannes Magnus could carry the largest piece of timber on his shoulders, he would give him the whole shipment for free. Magnus took the largest timber on his shoulders and carried it all the way from the docks to the barn, where he threw it on the ground. The timber remained at this spot as a reminder of Johannes' strength.
Johannes Magnus had several sons and the two first born, Frederik and Morten, became the great shipbuilders at Haagenvik.

Johannes married Anna Marie Catherina Von Krogh on 28 Dec 1819 in Vikedal, Rogaland, Norway. Notes:

JOHN VELIE MUNGER, a prominent and well-to-do farmer of Hudson Township, was born at Stillwater, Saratoga Co., N.Y., July 17, 1829. He is a son of John and Maria (Velie) Munger, both of whom were natives of the Empire State, and pioneers of the wilds of Michigan, having come to this State when it was yet a Territory, in 1835.

The father of the subject of this sketch was born in Saratoga County, N. Y., May 26, 1796, while yet that part of the State was but sparsely settled and largely covered with primeval forests. When he was some four years old, the family removed to Erie County. Pa., where they made their home until 1835. at which time his father started for the Territory of Michigan, where he hoped to build up a new home in the wilderness. He was accompanied by his wife and eight children, including our subject, and came by way of the lake to Toledo, Ohio. On arriving at the latter place, he left his family and started on foot for his future home in Hillsdale County. He had visited the Bean Creek Valley the year previous, and had entered some Government land on section 36 in what is now Pittsford Township. On his arrival in Hillsdale County, he procured a yoke of oxen and a cart, and returning to Toledo for his family and house hold goods, brought them to their new home. His land at that time was thickly covered by the forest that had grown and luxuriated for centuries undisturbed. Knowing that it would take some time to clear enough of it to raise a crop to support his family, he rented a tract of improved land, on which they lived for that year. During this time he disencumbered a portion of his own place of its leafy covering, and prepared the land for cultivation. Putting up a log cabin in 1836 he therein installed his family, and entering upon the arduous duties of a frontier farmer patiently endured the hardships and privations attendant on a pioneer life.

On this farm, which he had literally hewn out of the forest, the father resided until 1855, when he sold out and removed to Amboy Township, Lee Co., Ill., where he purchased 160 acres of prairie land of the Government, and commenced to break up a new farm, but two years later was called upon by the Angel of death to cross the dark river. His wife, who was before marriage Miss Maria Velie, was also a native of Stillwater, Saratoga Co., N. Y., and first drew the breath of life on the 25th of May. 1804; she died in Amboy, Ill., in 1875.

John V. Munger, the subject of this sketch, was but six years oid when he came to Michigan with his parents, and is a living witness of the great changes that have taken place since his early days. The deer, wolves, beers and wild turkeys that were so plentiful here in his boyhood, have entirely vanished, and the forest wilderness has given place to beautiful farms and thrifty towns and villages. He remained beneath the parental roof, attending the pioneer schools and assisting his father in his agricultural labors, until he was some nineteen years old, when he commenced an apprenticeship to the trade of carpenter and joiner. Having completed that trade, he has followed it ever since, with the exception of about ten years, when he was engaged in the manufacture of extension tables. In 1855 he removed to the village of Hudson, and purchasing a house on West Main street, took up his residence therein, and remained there until 1876, when he moved into a fine brick mansion which he had just erected. He made this latter house his home until February, 1888, when he commenced agricultural pursuits upon the Kenyon farm, where he is now living.

The subject of this sketch has been twice married. April 21. 1855, he entered into a matrimonial alliance with Miss Emily Allen, a native of Seneca County, N.Y., and the daughter of Robert Allen, also a Native of the Empire State. Her parents had settled in Hillsdale County in 1855, locating in Jefferson Township on a farm, and sometime subsequently removed to Reading Township, where they died. Mrs. Munger was called away by death April 25, 1881, leaving one child, Edith, now the now the wife of Lewis Graham of Wheatland Township. The second marriage of Mr. Munger took place May 10, 1882, at which time he espoused Miss Louise M. Kenyon. She is a native of this township and county, having been born on the farm where she now lives Feb. 15, 1840, and is a daughter of Sylvester and Eliza (Goodrich) Kenyon. Her father was one of the earliest settlers of Hudson Township, having located here in 1834. He was born in Hinesburg, Vt., Dec, 4, 1808, and grew to manhood among the green hills and valleys of his native state. May 11, 1834, he was united in marriage with Miss Eliza, a daughter of George and Clamania (Lee) Goodrich, who was born in Williston, Vt., Feb. 22, 1814. On the 14th of May following his marriage. Sylvester Kenyon started with his young bride for the West, to seek in the wilderness a new home. He came by way of the Erie Canal and the Lake to Detroit, and thence by team to Tecumseh, Lenawee County. Arriving at the embryo village, he left his wife and started on foot for the Bean Creek Valley, and found at Lanesville, now Hudson, but one log cabin, then occupied by Beriah Lane. Mr. Kenyon purchased a tract of land of Mr. Lane, adjoining the present site of the village, but after paying for it, he had but a few shillings left in his pocket, and therefore returned to Tecumseh, and worked on the territorial road to earn money enough to carry them through the winter.

Before the snow began to fly, Mr. K. removed to his place, where he had erected a log cabin, and during the winter felled some of the timber that covered the ground. The next season he raised a crop of corn and potatoes among the logs and stumps, which he had not yet time to destroy. After bringing his place to a high state of cultivation, he remained upon it until his death, which occured March 29, 1879. Mrs. Eliza (Goodrich) Kenyon died Dec. 24, 1879, nine months after the death of her husband. They left three children, the eldest, Mrs. G.G. Williams, now a resident of Vanderbilt, Otsego Co., Mich., but still owning the east half of the Kenyon homestead; Mrs. J.V. Munger, of Hudson, and Mr. Martin Kenyon, now a resident of Pittsford, Hillsdale Co., Mich.

Mrs. Kenyon died on the homestead. Mrs. Clamania Goodrich was born in Wells, Vt., June 16, 1790, and after her marriage settled with her husband at Williston, where they remained until 1836. At that time they started for the Territory of Michigan, by way of Lake Champlain to Troy, N.Y.,
and from there by Erie Canal and the Lake to Toledo. From the latter place they proceeded by team to Pittsford Township in Hillsdale County, where they settled upon a farm, where her husband died June 2, 1850. Mrs. Goodrich died on the old homestead, Dec. 13, 1863.

John married Maria Viele on 3 Jun 1823 in Stillwater, Saratoga, New York, USA. Maria (daughter of Stephen Viele and Sarah Toll) was born on 25 May 1804 in Stillwater, Saratoga, New York, USA; died on 6 Feb 1879 in Sublette, Lee, Illinois, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Asa Brown

    d: 1876

Asa Brown, an early hotelkeeper, was born in Vermont, and married Lucy Baker, of Ohio. After their marriage they located in Indiana, where Asa was one of the contractors on the Wabash canal. After the completion of the canal he located in Noble county, purchased a tract of land, and founded the village of Lisbon. Here he also erected a hotel which he conducted for several years. In 1861 he removed to Alexandria, Minn., built and conducted a feed and flouring mill, and remained three years.

In 1864 he came to Austin, Minn., and purchased what afterward became the Lacy House. Three years later he sold out and purchased a farm in Fillmore county. After farming three years he came to LeRoy and engaged in the hotel business a year. Then he and his wife spent two years in Kentucky, afterward taking up their residence in Lansing township.

Here Asa Brown died in 1876 at the age of eighty-three years. His wife died in June, 1909, at the age of eighty-seven.
