CAPTAIN HERMAN PRUSS

After a 3 mo. long severe illness, Hermann Pruss died Mon. night. The deceased, who had been perfectly healthy
heretofore, fell suddenly ill on 26 Aug. with a liver illness. The doctors were unable to stem the course of the disease. His loss was felt throughout the entire city and county. Hermann Pruss was born 27 May 1842 in Neustadt in Schleswig-Holstein. His father was a boatman and so as soon as he finished school he went directly to sea. He rose from ships boy to ordinary seaman to helmsman, traveling to Europe, America, Asia and Africa, finally coming to America in 1854 to New York. Later he settled in New Orleans from where he served on the West Indian route. During the Civil War he was drafted into the Confederate military. After the war he came to Manitowoc on 14 June 1868 and served from here as captain of various sailing ships on the Great Lakes. In later years he gave up the sailor’s life and operated the “ Delmonico” Tavern until his recent hospitalization. Captain Pruss married on 21 June 1868. He is survived by his widow and 3 daughters. His funeral will take place today at 2 p.m. in the city cemetery.

MARIA GAUGER
DEATH COMES TO MRS. C. GAUGER, HERE SINCE 1866

Death came yesterday morning as a relief to the suffering of Mrs. Maria Gauger, wife of Carl Gauger, who passed away at her home 1017 South Fifteenth street. Mrs. Gauger had been in poor health since January but for the last week her condition had been critical and her death was not unexpected. Born in Multzhan, Germany, March 7, 1845, Mrs. Gauger whose maiden name was Maria Kurth, came to this country locating at Manitowoc, in 1866, and two years later was married to Herman Preuss. There are three daughters, Mrs. Otto Alter, Mrs. W.C. Urbanek and Mrs. Lydia Hrabik. Mr. Preuss passed away in 1891 and in 1894 she was married to Carl Gauger who now survives. In addition to her three daughters and her husband, Mrs. Gauger leaves one brother, William Kurth of this city, three step children, August Gauger of this city, Edward of Milwaukee and John of Porterville, Calif., and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Gaugeer was a member of St. John's Evangelical church, and a member of the Ladies' Aid society of the church and when her health permitted was active in these organizations. The funeral will be held at the home at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and at the church at 2:30. The Rev. G.A. Winger will offiicate and burial will be at Evergreen.
