Notes:

Robert and William Devin Jr. served with Captain Henry Conway's Company of the 14th Virginia Regiment of Foot in the Continental Army. They served three years from January 1777 to February 1780, enlisting at Pittsylvania County Courthouse on January 26 1777, and were discharged in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 4, 1780. Robert and his brother, William, were in the same unit throughout their service.

Their unit was at Valley Forge with General Washington during the winter of 1777-1778. They fought in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth.

The records from the National Archives show Sergeant William Devin, with a variety of name variations, to be listed in the muster and pay rolls of Captain Henry Conway's company for most of the period of December 1776 through March 1779. Then, he was part of Captain Nathan Reid's Company and Lieutenant Colonel Hopkins' Company until November 1779. Finally, William Devin and Robert Devin were assigned to Captain John Overton's Company of Col. Febiger's Detachment, 2nd Brigade until they were discharged.

Robert Devin says in his pension application that Captain Henry Conway's company was formed at Smith's Store, then the Pittsylvania County, Virginia Court House. The records show that Sergeant William Devin was sick (June, July, and August 1778 muster rolls) and then, on extended furlough in Virginia beginning in Septermber 1778 to April 1779. This could be the time when William Devin had Smallpox that nearly cost him his life.

Robert Devin was born 6 Apr 1759 in what is now Pittsylvania Co, Virginia. He died 10 Apr 1834 in Pittsylvania Co, Virginia. He married Nancy Parrish 22 Jan 1791 in Pittsylvania Co, Virginia.

Nancy's father Abraham Parish bought land from the Pigg family in 1796. The indenture was witnessed by Shadrack Corder. On the 1850 census she and Clement Pigg are neighbors. (Clement Pigg as in Pigg v Corder.) On the 1840 census she lists 34 slaves in her household. On 1850 census her real estate is valued at 2886. In 1856 Nancy declares the death of a male slave, 8mo old, died of flux.

Moza Hurt moved from Caroline County, Va. to the part of Bedford County, Va. that was created from Bedford County and made into Campbell County in 1781. This move was before July 1768. He moved across the Staunton River into Halifax County, Va. between 1780 and 1782 and died there in 1793.

His will dated 12-15-1791, probated on 1-28-1793 and recorded in Halifax County, Va. in Will Book 3, page 35, names seven children, all by his first wife, Mary.

Moza Hurt (also known as Moses) was born in 1730 probably in or near Bedford County, Virginia. A number of records exist pertaining to his life. His land deeds, marriage records, and will, as well as records of his children?s marriages, are all preserved. He held substantial amounts of land in three counties: Bedford, Halifax, and Caroline, and he bought and sold land all his life. He acquired land on the Rappahannock River, where he lived in St. Margaret's Parish in Caroline County. He was appointed Constable there in 1752. From 1755 to 1758 he was road-overseer. He married a young lady named Mary (last name unknown) by 1758. They had seven children: Philemon, born 1758; Jane, Betty, Sarah Ellen, born by 1763; James, born 1763; and twins Patience and Prudence, born by 1774. In 1763, at the urging of his wife, Moza gave some slaves to his then four children: Philemon, Jane, Bettey, and Sarah. Why he did this, and why young children needed slaves of their own, is unknown. In 1776, the family moved to Bedford County (cut from Lunenburg County in 1753) where they bought 284 acres of land.
The Hurts fought with the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. It doesn't look like Moza fought, but he did supply aid to the Continental Army. The Bedford County Lists of publick claims filed by citizens lists Moza Hurt being returned provisions that had been collected in 1781 by Christopher Irvine. A Moses Hurt was recorded as having supplied 1 beef, 9 diets, 4 pecks corn. A Mosses Hurt supplied 2 diets and 2 pecks of corn. In 1782, a new county, Campbell, was cut from Bedford County, where the Hurts had been living. Sometime by 1782, Moza's wife, Mary, died, and he moved to Halifax County (cut from Lunenburg County in 1752), not necessarily in that order. Three and one half months before his second marriage, Moza persuaded his children to file a disclaimer to the slaves given them by Deed of Gift about 1763 in Caroline County. He then married Phebe Vaden, daughter of William Vaden and Frances Wilson, on April 10, 1782. She was the widow of Robert Mann who had died of smallpox.

The 1782 Heads of Households Census from Halifax County, Virginia, lists Moza Hurt with fourteen whites and nineteen blacks in the household.

The 1785 Heads of Families Census from Halifax County, Virginia, lists Moza Hurt with eight whites, one dwelling, and eight other buildings.

Moza died 1793 in Halifax County. His sons, James and Philemon, were the executors of his will. Phebe died two years later in 1795. His will read:

Children of Moza and Mary Hurt
James Hurt was born in 1763 in Caroline or Campbell County. He married his stepsister, Agnes Mann Harrison, daughter of Robert and Phebe Mann, and widow of Peterson Harrison, on June 10, 1782. He died in Campbell County in 1819.

Jane died by January 5, 1782, before Moza, married John Adams.

Elizabeth (Betty) and Sarah apparently were not taught to write because they did not sign their names on official documents, but simply made their marks.

Betty married Michael Prewitt, Jr.

Sarah Ellen married Byrd Prewitt. Her father signed his consent in February, 1782.

Patience married Samuel Hubbard in 1791. I don?t have any info on Prudence. Since Patience married in 1791, and had to be at least 17 years old to do so, she must have been born by 1774.

Philemon was born on October 6, 1758 in Caroline County, Virginia.

Notes:

William's family was said to be of Huguenot descent (French Protestants who were driven out of France in 1680 due to the Edict of Nantes). Devin is probably French--meaning sage, seer, foreteller of events. Surnames were adopted after 1000 AD in Europe and so our Devin ancestor was probably "le devin" (the seer) and the "le" was probably omitted with time. There were many Devins who did not leave France in 1680 and stayed Catholic. Some of these Catholic Devins came to Canada and there are many Devins in Canada today.

The Progenitor of the Devin Family in America was William Devin, Sr. William Devin Sr. came to America in 1745 or 1746 and in 1750 married Sarah Smith, and settled in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. They were members of the Presbyterian Church and accumulated some wealth. They had eleven children some dying in childhood. William Sr. named some of his children in his will recorded April 19,1802.

"In the name of God Amen, I, William Devin Sr.--of the County of Pittsylvania, in good health and of sound mind and memory for which I thank God; and calling to mind the mortality of man, knowing it is appointed of God for all men once to die, do make constitute and ordain this, my last Will and Testament--I first of all give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it me and my body to be decently intered at the discretion of my Executor and to such worldy Estate as it has pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give and dispose of in manner and form following, that is first of all my just Debts--to be honestly paid. Secondly, I give to my children, James Devin, Mary Biggar, William Devin Jr., Robert Devin, and Joseph Devin--twenty shillings to each of them, their heirs or assigns forever. Third, I give to my daughter Sarah Devin, the house in which I now live after being well covered out of money arising out of my estate and the land adjoining thereto and bounded as follows, by William Devin Jr. lines on the south, by Joseph Devin and Spragin on the east, by Robert Devin on the north, and by Wimbish and Spurling on the west to inclose part of my new survey agreeable to Robert Devin's marked line
for dividing the said survey. I also give said Sarah, one negro boy, Alleck, one mare Finnex, or her value in cash, or another creature of near equal value, one cow and calf, exclusive of a white cow I admit to be her own property, one bed and furniture of her choice and half of all the other of my household furniture; one ewe and lamb, if any belonging to my estate, and lastly two sows and pigs, the choice of my stock and provisions of every kind that I may die possessed of for her and those free persons that I may leave in my family at my death for one year after. My further will is that if my daughter Sarah Devin should die without lawful heir of her body that in that case she has a right only to dispose of half the property to her given as she may think proper, and the other half my will is that it may be equally divided between all my surviving children or their lawfully begotten heirs of any they have or assigns forever. Item--I give to the children of my daughter Margaret Reynolds--twenty pounds cash to be under the direction of their father, Joseph Reynolds for the use of the said children that may live to enjoy it. And my further will is that all the land and negroes I may be possessed of at my death with all and every kind of property to me belonging not before in this last will given shall be sold my Executor at one years credit and the money arising therefrom after all legal and lawful expenses are paid for the execution of the will, the surplus if any, to be divided equally between my children as follows to wit--William Devin Jr., Mary Biggar, Robert Devin, the children of Margaret Reynolds (deceased) Sarah Devin and Joseph Devin, their heirs or assigns forever....."

William Devin Sr. war services: War records no. 4 p. 166: "received a certificate for balance of full pay, according to act passed November session 1781, as Sergeant of Infantry...Virginia Continental Line."

The Devin property in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia is shown by deeds and records to be near the Sandy River, S.W. corner of Pittsylvania Co., N.W. of Danville and east of Martinville, Virginia. Pittsylvania Co. was formed in 1767 from Halifax Co., absorbed Patrick Co. and Herry Co. in 1777. In 1753 Halifax Co. was part of Lunenburg Co.

In records, various spellings of the Devin name is given...Davin, Deaven, Divean, Diven, and Divin. William Devin and his son, William Devin, Jr., took turns serving in the Military and sometimes only for three-month periods between farm work on their acreage, the military archives does not have any distinction between them, as all the records are just under
"William Devin". His first four sons were in the Revolutionary War.

Robert Ira Devin son of James, son of William Jr., son of William Sr. The letter is said to make the following statement: "Records of the Parish of Camden: Sarah Devin born March 20, 1728". "

"William Devin, Senior is considered to be the Progenitor of the protestant Devin family in the United States of America. William Devin, Senior of Virginia was born in Dublin, Ireland and came to America in 1745 or 1746. In 1750, he married Sarah Smith and settled in what is now Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

A William Davin along with son James Davin is listed in the 1767 list of Tithables for Pittsylvania County, Virginia Colony.

Like many landowners of the era and region, William Devin Senior owned slaves. His will states that he owned at least one male slave, named Alleck, which he bequeathed to his daughter Sarah Devin.

William Sr. served as Sergeant of Infantry, Virginia Continental Line. He "received a certificate for balance of full pay, according to act passed November session 1781". [more likely this was his son William Jr.]

Dessa's booklet mentions a letter to Alfred Harrison Devin written by Rev. Robert Ira Devin son of James, son of William Jr, son of William Sr. The letter is said to make the following statements: 'William Devin born 1724.'"

These statements may be accurate, but Dessa's booklet, as written, seems to relate that these records have Irish origins. There is a Camden Parish in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. If the referenced records are from the Virginia parish, why do they mention the marriage of William and Martha Devin? Is the Sarah Devin mentioned in the records actually William Sr.'s spouse rather than his sister? Another theory is that the William and Martha Devin mentioned in the parish of Camden records is William Devin and Martha Mitchell and the 2 in 1720 is actually an eight.
