Isaac Wade signed the inventory and appraisement of the estate of Thomas Stevens, Jr., which was dated June 15th and presented to court on June 28, 1779, apparently because he had married the widow. His signature was in the place where an administrator or executor usually signed, but he was not designated as either. Neither was he one of the appraiser.

The will of Isaac Wade was dated May 11, 1821 and proved on September 22, 1823 in Bedford County. In it he made bequests to his wife Polly Wade, to sons Jeremiah Wade, Archibald Wade, Isaac Wade, Jr., Alexander Wade and Paschal Wade, and to daughters Patsy Adams, Polly Gibbs, Nancy Stevens and Sally Ballenger. He also mentioned an open account between Jeremiah Wade, Archibald Wade, Alexander Wade, Gilbert Gibbs, Richard Ballenger, Henry Stevens and himself, without specifying his relationship with Gibbs, Ballenger and Stevens. His wife Polly Wade, Jeremiah Wade and Archibald Wade were appointed to be the executors.

    Notes:

    Rev. Alderson Weeks (c. 1745 - 1808)
The third child and son of William and Mary (Alderson?) Weeks of Westmoreland County, Virginia, was born about 1745. Married to Jane Lawrence?.

The established church and religion recognized by the Colony of Virginia was the Anglican Church, or Church of England. A tax was levied for the support of said church and for establishing congregations throughout the colony. In the mid 1700s, the Baptists stoodup against this law and many Baptist preachers were arrested by warrant and imprisoned. Alderson and several other Baptist ministers in Farquier County were arrested during the late 1760s - early 1780s. (Please see Sanders/Saunders family history.)

    Religious Persecution

During this period Alderson and George Weeks converted to the Baptist faith, and Alderson became a licensed Baptist minister, laboring at the Chappawomsick Church (established 22 November 1766) in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia, but not before a warrant for his arrest was issued:20
“The ministers are Rev. Mess. D. Thomas and Daniel First who have to their assistants Mess. Philip Spiller and Alderson Weeks; the last has been taken on a warrant for the word of God and the Testimony of Jesus but not imprisoned. . . .
“The civil powers also threatened them and issued warrants against some, particularly Mess. Spiller, Weeks and others: but having obtained help of God they continue to this day.”

For a period of time Alderson was the minister of the North Fork Church, a member of the Ketocton Association, and is remembered to have been a “preacher of acceptance and usefulness.” “Mr. Weeks, the first pastor of this church, moved to Bedford, and there has the care of a church. We presume it is the same man,” so wrote Semple in his history of the Baptist in Virginia.

The Chappawomsick Church held the belief that playing cards and drinking were not acceptable.21

This church endured through a period of great persecution. Robert Ashby and his gang consisting of around 40, came to harass the Chappawomsick congregation during worship in which they bust through the door as bears; but some members of the congregation who were stout men, took Ashby by the neck and heels and threw him out of the church; his gang engaged the Baptists assembled in a bloody fray. On another occasion, they threw a live snake into the midst of the church.22

On another occasion Charles Williams led a riot, but being reproved, he ran home to get his gun and shoot the pastor. When he produced the gun it was struck out of his hand, then he proceeded to use his fists that resulted in a bloody fight.23

On 22 November 1766, Alderson was with Phil Spiller and Rev. David Thomas, at the Brentown Branch of the Chappawomsick regular church. Five years later Alderson’s brothers, George and William, with their families, joined the Chappawomsick Baptist Church.

The membership roll of Goose Creek Baptist Church, located in Loudon County, Virginia, list Alderson and Jane Weeks from 1775-1779.

    Military service

Family tradition through the descendants of George, state that both George and his brother, Alderson, were soldiers in the Revolutionary War. Alderson’s record is in the Fauquier County Minute Book for 1775-1783, under the October Court of 1779 states:24

“These men were recommended as fit and proper persons to be Militia Officers:

    (total four companies)

. . . John Hathaway as Captain, John Barker as 1st Lieutenant, Wm. Heale as 2nd Lieutenant, Alderson Weeks as Ensign.”

It would appear that Alderson traveled a great deal as a minister, and might have been a “circut preacher.” He is listed in the tax rolls for Faquier County, from 1782 - 1787. Alderson at this time owned three slaves.25

An indenture dated 23 February 1782, between Thomas Owsley and wife of Loudoun County, and Alderson Weeks of Fauquier County, both Virginia.

After the war, Alderson obtained land in Loudoun County, Virginia, where Alderson bought land and built a church at Bare/Bear Creek. The congregation named itself the North Fork Primitive Baptist Church. They met as early as 1784, and a building erected ten years later, with Alderson as the first pastor. He left the area around 1793.26

An Anderson Weekes is listed as the minister of record on 24 May 1795, for Mark Anthony and Sarah Henry Tate, in Campbell County, Virginia, and again listed in 1798, two in 1802.27

By 1810 the Weeks family was living in Bedford County, Virginia. Here the Quakers of the area came to him for marriage and registration for years, and is listed many times marrying couples inThe Encylopedia of Quaker Genealogy. Also the neighboring county of Campbell has him on a list for 1782-1810.

    Rev. Alderson Weeks Will
“3-191 Alderson Weeks will dated 30 November 1808, probated, 27 February 1809. wife Jane to have the home part of the home place, etc;, son Elijah to have the other part, to 5 daughters, 1 Susanna Garret, deceased, her children, Alderson and Rison Garret., 2 Ceila Weeks, 3 Polly Weeks, m. Benjamin Wright, 4 Peggy Wade, 5 Nancy Wade, son-in-law, Archibald Wade.”

Jane passed away in 1814, for on 14 January 1814, her son, Elijah, inherited the home place from his mother.

Alderson and Jane (Lawrence?) Weeks had six children.

    CHILDREN

    1. Elijah Weeks - Born about 1772 in Loudoun County, Virginia. Married 29 May 1802, to Margaret Thompson in Campbell County, Virginia. (P.100, married by father.)

    Obiturary: Nancy (Weeks) Wade (1786 - 1861)

“Departed this life in the 75th year of her age, Sister Nancy, wife of Brother Archibald Wade, Sr. She was born on the 2nd day of January 1786 He father was Elder Alderson Weeks one of the Founders of the Difficult Creek Baptist Church of which he was Pastor. She was united in matrimony to Mr.Archibald Wade to whom for 57 years she was a helpmate in spiritual as well as temporal things. The fruit of this marriage was 14 children, 13 of who 11 daughters and 2 sons she lived to see married and and settled in life and better still to see all but two on their way to heaven. The subject of this notice in 1808 was baptized into fellowship of the Difficult Creek Church by Elder William Davis of which she continued a worthy member until by letter she united with Other Church under the care of Elderesse Witt. Her beloved husband having expressed a hope in Christ was baptized by the Pastor into the fellowship of the same Church. Sister Wade was a most Exemplary Christian. Truly it might be said of her she lived the life of a Chrisian. Religion was not with her a mere form or ceremony or something put on for the occasion but a substantial living reality. The Bible was the Rule of her Faith and practice. It was her custom to read a portion of the Word of God every day. She spent much of the Holy Sabbath in searching the living oracles for hidden treasure which make wise unto salvation. She read the Bible through some 42 times. She was a great advocate for family prayer. In the absence of her husband and even sometimes when he was present she led in family worship. Truly the posterity of such a woman must needs be pious. Although her voice lifted up in prayer will be heard no more upon Earth, her example lives and will live forever for shebeing dead yet Speaketh. May her aged husband now almost upon the verge of the tomb and her numerous descendants follow her as she followe Christ and finally share with her in the Bliss of the Redeemed in Heaven. G.W.L.”28

A year after the death of Alderson Weeks, Archibald Wade died and left his wife a widow. She remarried on 26 October 1809, to William Overstreet, with her uncle George Weeks as the posting the sureity bond.

For the children of Nancy (Weeks) and Archibald Wade please see the Wade family history.

On the same day, he sold 378 acres on the headwaters of Thrasher's and Franklin Creeks to John Parks. This second conveyance was witnessed by Matthew Tucker, Drury Tucker, and Joseph Ballenger.[10] Jeremiah was described as being of St. Ann's Parish.
According to William Scroggins, Jeremiah sold three slaves to Hector McAllister, but the date wasn't available to him. He also reports that, along with Neil Campbell "and others", he sold 400 acres on Rockfish Creek to George Donald and Company.[11] Could the latter have been a trust deed? Neil Campbell's mistress, Tabitha Ballowe later married Joseph Ballenger.
17 Feb 1772: Jeremiah Wade Senior sold 378 acres in the fork of the James River adjoining Matthew Tucker, Drury Tucker and Lacy Sine in Albemarle to Richard Bennett.[12]
8 Jul 1772: Jeremiah made his will in Bedford County, VA, naming executors Richard Ballenger and James and Nathan Hilton. In it, he left his estate was to be equally divided among his children, but he made no mention of a wife, thus Charity must have predeceased him. Witnesses: Abraham Ervine, Jesse Hilton, and Elizabeth Mitchell. It was proved 28 Sep 1772, with Guy Smith serving as security for James Hilton. Executor Hilton made his inventory and appraisal on 10 Oct 1772.[13] Jesse Hilton had been surety for the marriage daughter Mary Ballenger Wade to Whitehead Ryan.

    Notes:

    Timeline of Joseph Ballinger's Life

1691: Joseph Ballenger was born in Burlington County, NJ.[24] There are several researchers who have reservations regarding Joseph's parentage. They'd like more proof that he was the son of Henry and Mary Harding Ballenger and ask the quite relevant question: Where was he between 1710 and 1729?

1694: Charity Wade was born in New Jersey.[25] Her parents are not known by this researcher, but many have speculated that her father was James Wade and that Charity may have been the sister of Robert Wade, who also moved to Goochland County, VA. There is no doubt, that the Wades were Quakers. (William S. Scroggins has an excellent web site with information on the Wades at wgscroggins.kueber.us.)

Although Joseph was born and raised among the Society of Friends, he eventually became a member of the Church of England, the only sanctioned church of the Virginia Colony. There is no record, however, of his having been disowned by the Quakers, perhaps because, like so many others, he simply drifted away after moving to the Virginia frontier. Although some have reported that he became a minister in the Anglican Church, performing many marriages, this would seem unlikely. An Anglican vicar needed a divinity degree obtainable only in England, the major cause of the perpetual shortage of vicars in the Colonies. Far from having a divinity degree, Joseph signed his will with his mark. It would therefore make more historical sense if he had become a Baptist minister or an Anglican layman.[26] In any case, he may have become confused with his son Joseph who did perform marriages.

1710: Joseph purchased 340 acres in Burlington County from his father Henry. It was Joseph's share of 1,200 acres that Henry Ballenger deeded to his sons Joseph, Josiah, and Henry.

    c. 1720: Joseph married Charity Wade in Burlington County.[27] Or not? The record cited by Reeves shows no trace of Joseph or Charity. We therefore have no documented event that could fill in the lost years of 1710-1729.

A group of Quakers formed under Alexander Ross and Morgan Bryan in Pennsylvania for the purpose of settling in Maryland and Virginia. Brothers Joseph, Josiah, and Henry supposedly joined this group: "Associated with Ross were Joseph Ballinger and James Wright".[28] (James Wright was the father of Josiah's wife Mary Wright Ballenger and Henry's wife Hannah Wright Ballenger.)

22 Aug 1729: Joseph Barringer [doubtless Ballinger] purchased 128 acres on the main fork of Bird [Byrd] Creek on the north side of the James River in Goochland County, VA from Henry Reynolds for £15.[29] Robert Wade purchased land lying "near" Bird Creek on the same day.

19 Sep 1732: Joseph Barringer was named surveyor of the road 2 miles above the mouth of Bird Creek as far as Buck Island.[30] Bird Creek lies in the southwester corner of the county.

15 May 1733: Samuel Buck was appointed surveyor of the road from Joseph Barringer's to Buck Island.[31]

21 Jan 1734: Various tithables were ordered to work on the road on the south side of the North river above "Barrenger's Road".[32]

March 1735: The case of Joseph Barrenger against James Howlin was dismissed by the court in Goochland County.[33]

18 Nov 1735: The court fined John Henderson £10 for abusing "Charity Barrenger . . . by words, speaking scandalous of her, and striking her in the face". The complaint had been brought by husband Joseph Barrenger. The court also required Henderson to give a bond of £100 to insure his good behavior for 1 year and 1 day, "especially towards Charity".[34]

    c. 1736: Joseph Barrenger served on jury hearing case of John Johnston versus John Scruggs for trespass in Goochland County.[35]

5 Oct 1736: Joseph Ballenger was mentioned as an adjoining landowner in a deed for William Mattock on the north side of the James River close to Little Byrd Creek.[36]

9 Jul 1737: Joseph Ballenger received a land patent for 200 acres on the south side of the Fluvanna River in Goochland. This land may have been called the "Seven Islands".[37] Reeves incorrectly claims that the tract was patented to Samuel Jordan in 1736 and only "formerly granted to Joseph Ballenger".[38]

18 Jul 1739: Joseph Barrenger's tithables were ordered to work on the road from the Bird Creek bridge to the Crooked Falls on the Rivanna River.[39]

15 Sep 1741: Joseph and Charity Ballenger sold 200 acres on the Rivanna River adjoining George Nicholas in St. James Parish to Thomas Walton for £30. This parcel was described as having been granted to Joseph on 9 Jul 1737. Witnesses: Robert Walton, William Witt, John Popham, and Julius Sanders. Signed by Joseph (x) and Charity (x) Ballenger.[40] The James River was called the Rivanna.

15 Sep 1741: John Henry was appointed to clear a bridle path from Mountain Road to "Barringer's on the Rivanna River".[41]

24 Feb 1742: Land sold by Richard Mullins to Bryan Connerly was described as adjoining Jospeh Ballenger on north side of James River.[42]

5 Jun 1744: Joseph signed his will with his mark.

Joseph married Charity Wade. Charity (daughter of James Andrew Wade and Margaret Mary Elizabeth Hampton Mosby) was born in 1694 in Curles Plantation, Henrico, Virginia, USA; died on 19 Feb 1744 in , Goochland, Virginia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Henry is found at Nailemith Monthly Meeting in Gloucestershire, England. On March 16, 1677, Henry left London on the ship Kent with 230 passengers intent to establish a new colony in the New World. Kent landed first in New York and then headed to Perth Amboy and onto the Delaware River. They arrived June 23 1678 in the Quaker Colony of West Jersey, Burlington township. Also on board the Kent were Thomas Eaves and Thomas Harding. In 1684, Henry located 262 acres at the Vale of Eavesham - now in Burlington County, New Jersey. This land is still known as Ballenger Farm. In 1684, Henry, the husbandman of North River, and Mary Harding of Burlington were married in Eavesham.

In 1697, 40 Quakers, including Henry, signed the New Jersey General Assembly Agreement to support the king. Henry was appointed special tax collector in 1701.

Upon his death, Henry left his son Amoriah Ballenger, the house and the lands. His other children were left anywhere from five shillings to twenty pounds.

His will dated August 3 1727 was probated October 4 1733.Much of actual source data supporting this has been deleted for reasons unknown. Emma Barrett Reeves, Three Centuries of the Ballingers in America,p. xxi: "...That Henry had earned for himself a reputation for industry and integrity is proved by the fact that he was elected to the Assembly in 1697, and in May 1701 he was appointed social tax collector for his hometown of Evesham." According to family tradition there were five Ballinger brothers in France, one of whom was burned at the stake and one hanged during the persecutions of the Huguenots. The remaining brothers came to America in 1678. One settled in Virginia, one inPennsylvania and the third, Henry Ballinger, progenitor of the familyin Burlington County, settled in Evesham Township not far from the village of Evesboro. : Henry Ballinger married Mary Harding on Ninth month 4th, 1684. : A return of survey dated Fourth month, 1684, shows that 262 acres were surveyed for Henry Bailinger "at the Vale of Easham." This farm was located on the road leading from Evesboro to Medford about one and one-half miles east of the former village and is still known locally asthe Ballinger farm. Although Henry and Mary Ballinger settled on thistract they apparently lived on the Rancocas for a year or two at least after their marriage. The Meeting record of the birth of their son, Thomas, on Sixth month 13th, 1685 reads, "Thomas Ballinger, son of Henry and Mary Baffinger of Northampton River." Their children were
