    Notes:

Brothers George and Calvin Moore appear to have run most of the family livery business during the Civil War. In the early part of the war George and Thornton stayed in Danville. Calvin came home from the war in June 1863. Both George and Calvin conducted extensive transactions related to the business. Calvin appears to have worked mainly as a stage driver, while George traded, boarded, and rented horses. He owned a number of wagons, carriages, and buggies as well. Since they were in Danville, a good amount of livery and stage business was conducted with the Confederate Army. Surviving Confederate invoices are either signed by or refer to Major William T Sutherlin, the Army's Quartermaster in Danville during the war. After the fall of Richmond the government relocated to Danville. Sutherlin opened his home to Davis and his cabinet during the week which led to Appomattox. Danville became known as the Last Capital of the Confederacy.

The entire family, including 7 brothers and their families, worked the livery as of the 1860 census. 5 of the 7 brothers enlisted in the 18th Virginia Infantry Regiment on April 23, 1861.

They fought in battles at Brandywine and Germantown in Pennsylvania. Later, Isaac Wade enlisted in the Bedford County, Virginia, militia, which was called-up in August 1781 to go to Little York for the planned battle with Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. There he witnessed the surrender of the British to generals Washington and Lafayette. He was discharged from the militia on the battlefield, immediately after the victory in October 1781. JACOB WADE, “LATE SOLDIER OF THE CONTINENTAL LINE”

Bedford Co., VA, Court Order Book 22, 1828-1829, p. 203, recorded information that Elizabeth Wade who died before 1877, “was the daughter and only heir of Jacob Wade late soldier of the Continental Line” in the American Revolution. Elizabeth was the wife of EPHRAIM BONDURANT (abt. 1790 - 1877) of Bedford Co., VA. Ephraim is believed to be one of the children of John Bondurant and Martha ? who moved from Buckingham Co. to Bedford Co., VA, about the time of the Revolution. This John may have been the baby son of John and Sarah R. Taylor Bondurant, who was baptized in King William Parish in 1737, Goochland Co., VA. The Bedford Co. document would qualify descendants of Elizabeth and Ephraim for membership in SAR or DAR, based on Jacob Wade’s service.

Hello & thanks for your reply: Full name is DANIEL COLEMAN EDWARDS, b. abt 1750 in VA. Ancestry.Com always show birth as being in Bedford Co but I find no proof. He was supposely the son of WILLIAM EDWARDS & Grizzel Coleman, dau. of Daniel & PATIENCE ELLIOTT. DC's will was probated in Cumberland Co [Southam Par] 22 Jan 1770 & refers to his dau. Grizzel as Grizzel Edwards. Patience's will was probated 26 Aug 1771, Southam Par, Cumberland Co. per "Abstracts of Cumberland Co, VA Will Books 1 & 2, pp. 43 & 47.I went to Cumberland Ct House & searched for Daniel but found only William. In Pittsylvania Co. I found a copy of an Indenture in Deed Book 11, pp 246-247 dated 15 Feb 1798 whereby Bennett sold to DANIEL C. EDWARDS OF THE COUNTY OF BEDFORD. Proving his residence prior to that date was Bedford Co & then became resident of PittsCo. In another deed dated 15 Sep 1820 Daniel's full name is used [DCE].In "Marriages & Deaths From Lynchburg, VA Newspapers 1794-1836 sponsored by Randall Holt Chapter, NSD of the American Colonists, p. 180 has a brief obit & from there I found a complete copy of same: MR. EDWARDS WAS A SOLDIER IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR...Obit has a title ANOTHER REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER GONE. That statement is not enough to prove his service as I submitted DCE DAR last year & was told that I needed more proof. He has never been submitted before. If I had to guess, I would guess that he lived in BedCo during the War years... so far, no proof. No Oath taken in PittsCo. but I cannot find any such list for Bedford. I queried PittsCo Historical Society, nothing there in the way of anything! So: if DCE's parents are in fact Wm. & Grizzel, why was he born in Bedford Co. & lived there for a good part of his adult life? He is not to be found in Maude Carter Clement's book, nor in the 1777 Oaths list of PittsCo, nor VAs Colonial Soldiers nor VA Military Records but for one DANIEL EDWARDS who was paid along with others for work on the fort at York Towne, p. 464. DAR replied that he would not have traveled to York Towne just to help build a fort. Someone once suspected he had been in the 14th or 15th VA Reg. No proof yet.Do I know too much! Also know he did not give food, animals tot he War effort in any of the 3 counties.ThanksPJ- Original Message ----- From: "marsha moses" <[log in to unmask]>To: <[log in to unmask]>Sent: Saturday, July 02, 2011 9:11 AMSubject: Re: [VA-ROOTS] Pittsylvania & Bedford Co, VA. William Edwards 1720-1784 married Grissel Coleman in 1750 Cumberland Co., VA. John Peter Bondurant [Sr.] was born circa 1710 in King William Parish, Goochland Co., Virginia., He married Sarah Rachael Moseley about 1729 or 1736. John died circa 1774 in Buckingham Co., Virginia.

John and his wife Sarah lived in Goochland County, Virginia, and later in Cumberland County. He deeded 200 acres of land to his son, John Peter III of Albemarle County, on 9 March 1758.

Sarah was the widow of Robert L Moseley. The Bondurant Family Association Newsletter reprinting information from The Huguenot Magazine, Vol 25, page 173 gives the marriage date as 1836 but indicates date and place not proved.

Grinnell, in his manuscript, indicates that John died in Manakin in 1744. A pedigree chart in The Huguenot, Publication No. 30, submitted by Mary V Bondurant Epling, indicates that John died about 1744 in Buckingham County, but before 1776, and that his death was recorded in Powhatten County. A GEDCOM received from Ruby Talley Smith indicated he died in 1774.

    Charity Ballenger & Jeremiah Wade
Jeremiah, born c. 1710, was probably the brother of Pearce Wade, who married Charity's sister Mary Ballenger. Their father may have been Robert Wade of Hanover County, VA, and Robert in turn may have been the brother of Charity Wade Ballenger, mother of both girls.
    c. 1723: Charity Ballenger was born in New Jersey.
Jeremiah and Charity were already married before Joseph Ballenger made his will on 5 Jun 1744.
21 May 1745: Jeremiah purchased 150 acres on Great Byrd Creek in Goochland County from John and Sarah Denny for £45. The parcel adjoined John Martin, John Hinson, Ebenezer Adams, deceased, and John Denny. The witnesses were Pearce Wade, James George, and Joseph Pare.[1]
20 Dec 1748: Jeremiah and Charity Wade sold 150 acres on Byrd Creek to John Faris for £45. The adjoining landowners were Richard Adams, John Hinson, and Colonel John Martin. Witnesses: John Mosely Junior, William Robards, and Benjamin Denny.[2]
26 Dec 1748: Jeremiah bought 197 acres on Old Johns Creek in Goochland from Charles and Tabitha Rayley for £70. It was bounded Stephen Hughes, Daniel Stoner, William Runnals, and John Rayley. Witnesses: Robert Hughes, Tucker Woodson, Robert Hughes Junior, and R. Walton.[3]
24 Feb 1749: Along with Pearce Wade, Jeremiah Wade of "Cumberland County" was security on a bond of £400 for John Britt of Goochland County as executor for John Britt, deceased.[4] Cumberland County was formed from Goochland that year.
11 Apr 1750: As co-executors of the estate of Joseph Ballenger, Jeremiah Wade of Cumberland County and Pearce Wade and Thomas Cothon [Cawthon] of Albemarle County sold 128 acres on Byrd Creek in Goochland County to John Britt for £60. The parcel was adjoined by John Haden, Bryan Connely, and Arthur Hopkins. The sale was witnessed by James George, William Britt, and John Faris.[5] John Britt was apparently already living on the acreage.
12 Jul 1751: Jeremiah Wade, planter, purchased 180 acres on Thrasher's Creek in Albemarle County from Howard Cash, planter. Witnesses: David Wade, Michael Smith, and Chisley Daniel.[6]
2 Apr 1752: Jeremiah sold land adjoining Pearce Wade to David Wade. Witnesses: Pearce Wade, James George, and Christly Daniel.[7]
2 Jul 1752: Jeremiah sold the parcel bought from Charles Rayley to David Siser. The land was now in Cumberland County, while Jeremiah was described as being of Albemarle County. Witnesses: Tarleton Woodson Junior, Ben Watkins Junior, Stephen Tampton Junior, Drury Woodson, and Thomas Pleasants.[8]
2 Jul 1763: Along with Pearce Wade and Richard and Joseph Ballenger, Jeremiah sold 800 acres, part of a grant of 2,000 acres, on the south side of the Buffalo River under the Tobacco Mountains in Amherst County, VA to George Seaton.[9] Originally granted to Richard and Joseph, 400 acres each had been granted by them to Jeremiah and Pearce.
20 Aug 1768: Jeremiah sold 114 acres on the top of Smith's Mountain adjoining Joseph Ballenger and William Cabell to Joseph Ballinger for £10. On the same day, he sold 378 acres on the headwaters of Thrasher's and Franklin Creeks to John Parks. This second conveyance was witnessed by Matthew Tucker, Drury Tucker, and Joseph Ballenger.[10] Jeremiah was described as being of St. Ann's Parish.
According to William Scroggins, Jeremiah sold three slaves to Hector McAllister, but the date wasn't available to him. He also reports that, along with Neil Campbell "and others", he sold 400 acres on Rockfish Creek to George Donald and Company.[11] Could the latter have been a trust deed? Neil Campbell's mistress, Tabitha Ballowe later married Joseph Ballenger.
17 Feb 1772: Jeremiah Wade Senior sold 378 acres in the fork of the James River adjoining Matthew Tucker, Drury Tucker and Lacy Sine in Albemarle to Richard Bennett.[12]
8 Jul 1772: Jeremiah made his will in Bedford County, VA, naming executors Richard Ballenger and James and Nathan Hilton. In it, he left his estate was to be equally divided among his children, but he made no mention of a wife, thus Charity must have predeceased him. Witnesses: Abraham Ervine, Jesse Hilton, and Elizabeth Mitchell. It was proved 28 Sep 1772, with Guy Smith serving as security for James Hilton. Executor Hilton made his inventory and appraisal on 10 Oct 1772.[13] Jesse Hilton had been surety for the marriage daughter Mary Ballenger Wade to Whitehead Ryan.

From: An Abbreviated History of Pittsylvania County, Virginia Chapter Six: Pittsylvania's Military History By Maud Carter Clement , Chatham, Virginia, ca. 1952

In the summer of 1776 the Cherokee Indians attacked the western frontiers, and Virginia sent a force of 1600 men against them. We know of four companies of Pittsylvania Militia which marched with this force, commanded by Captains Jesse Heard, Peter Perkins, William Witcher, and Joseph Martin. When General Nathaniel Greene assumed command in the south, Virginia at once sent reinforcements. From Pittsylvania in the fall and winter of 1780-81 marched companies of militia commanded by Captains John Winn, James Brewer, William Witcher, Isaac Clements and Joshua Stone.

    Mr. T. A. Witcher,
    Brownwood, Texas

    Dear sir:

In reply to your favor of recent date, and in answer to your enquiries:

At the creation of this County in 1767, one Wm. Witcher qualified as a vestryman for the Parish of Cambden. He was afterwards Capt., Justice of the Peace, and Maj. in the Continental Army. His will is dated in 1808. His sons were Caleb, Ephraim, John, Daniel, and William, His daughters-Ann, who married a Razor and other daughter married Morrison. I know nothing of them and descendants. William and John died in this County. Ephraim and Caleb move to Surrey and Nash Counties, N.C. Daniel moved to Kanawha County, West Va., on Witcher Creek. He was the Ancestor of Gen. J.L. Witcher of Salt Lake City, who was in the Yankee Army. I am a grandson of Vincent Witcher who was a son of Wm. I did meet Toliver Witcher when a boy, at the Columbia Hotel in Richmond. He was then Georgian. Seemed to be reticent, and as I was a mere boy I talked and saw but little of him. There is a family of Witchers in Clark and Oglethorpe Georgia; and I learn there is another family near Marietta. Vincent Witcher was for 29 years a Representative from this County. Also President of Richmond and Danville R.R. Came in one vote of being elected Governor and 3 votes of U.S. Senate. Had 3 sons N.M. Capt. V.O. and Col. W.A. Witcher of 21st Va. Regiment. V.O. died in 1869. Belonged to 57th If. I am a son of N.M. and commanded the 34th Va. Cav. I was at the battle of Gettysburg, and out of 432 men, lost all but 96. Was sent to East Tenn, and participated in all campaigns there. ________ and after Lee I surrendered. Was introduced to President Davis by Gen'l Jno C. Breckenridge, as the bravest of the brave, the truest of the true.

I am a farmer. On a good farm, and am 69 years old. Never held a Civil office, and told the President two years ago, wanted Elective or appointed: and have been for many years dissatisfied with both the centralizing tendencies of the Republicans, and the demagogary and insincerity of the Democrats, who seem to have no great underlying principles. Hence I am allied with the Populist and am a member of both the National and State Committees. Feel little interest any way.

Your mother was educated at a grand, noble Institution. My first wife was also educated at Salem. My present wife has a niece in your City who was formerly a Mrs. Rucker. I think she married a McCormick. I would be pleased to write to you any time, and give you all the information I can. There are James Witcher at Bells that Sen. Bailey has told me of. Mrs. Nancy Langhorne Astor, her grandmother was a Witcher. During the War I met Mrs. Dr. Ewing ______Cumberland Gap, and she said Wm. L. ______ and Ben Hill were Cousins of ours. The Daltons-- she was daughter of James Witcher.

    Very truly and respectfully,
    (signed V.A. Witcher)

William Witcher came to the American colonies from England. He served in the Virginia Militia during the American Revolution. He led his company into the battle of Stono Ferry, SC, in 1779. He also fought in the battle of Guilford Courthouse, NC, in 1781. During the Indian Expeditionary Wars he became a Brevet Colonel.

The History of Pittsylvania County Virginia By Maud Carter Clement
Various excerpts related to William Witcher:

In 1776 Pittsylvania County and Camden Parish were organized and at the first meeting of the vestry, held June 21, 1776, at the courthouse, there were present the following vestrymen, 'who subscribed in the Vestry to be comfortable to the doctrine and Discipline of the Church of England as by law Established: John Donelson, John Pigg, Hugh Innes, George Rowland, Crispen Shelton, John Wilson, Peter Perkins, Abram Shelton, Theophilus Lacy, Robert Chandler, and William Witcher.

While the Virginia troops were still in their entrenchments at Gwynn's Island an express arrived from the governor ordering them to march at once against the Indians along the western frontier. The inciting of the Indians to their barbarities against defenseless frontiersman is the darkest blot on England's fair name during the Revolutionary War.

Virginia sent a force of 1,600 men against the Cherokees, while North and South Carolina sent out expeditions at the same time. Virginia's troops rendezvoused at Long Island in the Molstein River, where in the early summer a fort had been erected and named Patrick Henry in honor of the newly elected governor.

The Cherokees lived on the Tennessee river, and all things being in readiness on October the 1st, the troops set out from Fort Patrick Henry for the march of 115 miles through the wilderness to the Indian towns. Captain William Witcher was left with a guard of 200 men for the Fort.

Indian outrages continuing along the frontier, the states forces were ordered to take the field in another Indian expedition in 1777. Two companies from Pittsylvania marched in this campaign, one commanded by Captain John Donelson, ... ; the other was commanded by Captain William Witcher. Both rendezvoused at Pittsylvania Old Courthouse (Callands) in the month of March 1777.

General Nathaniel Greene assumed command of the Southern Continental Army in the autumn of 1780 at Millsboro, North Carolina, and Virginia at once sent re-inforcement's. Several companies of militia marched from Pittsylvania that autumn and winter. Captain John Winn commanded a company ... Captain James Brewer a company ... Captain William Witcher a company ... Captain Isaac Clements a company ... Captain Joshua Stone a company ... "
