Notes |
- They lived in the state of Virginia. When the Civil War started, John had to go to war. Virginia was a slave state so Eliza left by covered wagon to try to get to a free state. She had four children at that time. Della (Gene's great grandmother) was the baby about six months old. When Eliza got to the state of Ohio, all the children got diphtheria. The three older ones died. They were all buried in a single grave in Ohio. In the little settlement where Eliza had stopped and where the children died, there was an old Indian lady who doctored Della with herbs and she survived the dreaded illness. After John got out of the war, he contracted tuberculosis, but they had six more children.
