• Notes

  When 44 years of age, he met an untimely death on September 3, 1903, when he was shot and killed in the street in front of his home in Rowena, as his eldest son William Alton helplessly witnessed the tragedy. He was returned to Cuthbert, Georgia, where his wife and remaining children were residing.
