Notes |
- From John William Baker, History of Hart County, 1933, 2nd ed. (1968), pp. 359-60:
To the best of our information, Providence Church was constituted about the year 1815, as we have a record to the effect that John B. Wade and his cousin James Wade, both of whom were local Methodist preachers, and Polly Wade, who was perhaps an aunt of John B. Wade, and Elizabeth (or Betty as she was called), sister to John B. Wade and wife of Tarvner Rucker and perhaps others, on Christmas eve 1815, erected a log house which was the first church building at Providence, and that Polly and Betty were so anxious that the house be built that they with their own hands carried up one corner of the house when it was raised.
Perhaps it would be as appropriate here as elsewhere to give some kind of a historical sketch of Rev. John B. Wade and his activities as a pioneer preacher in the early days of our country.
He was a son of Anne Wade, as it appears from the old records of Franklin County that during the year 1825 and perhaps before and after, she drew a pension as the widow of a Revolutionary soldier, in which connection John B. Wade and others are mentioned as her children.
Anne Wade and children, and perhaps others of the Wade connection, came from Virginia and settled in what was then Franklin, later Hart County.
Anne Wade is buried in the cemetery at Providence and her grave is marked by a splendid rock vault, which bears the following inscription: "Anne Wade, Died June 18, 1849, ae. 84 years." It is evident from this inscription that she was born about the year 1764.
John B. Wade lived in the community at the time Providence Church was organized and on up until aboult the year 1854, when he sold his land and bought other lands down in the neighborhood of Macedonia Church, which was consecrated in 1854, he being perhaps the moving spirit in the organization and constitution of the church at Macedonia. He and others were the trustees to whom the land on which the church was located was deeded by Job Bowers, 23 Aug. 1854.
Along about the 1840s or early 1850s, there was a Methodist church called New Hope, which stood about a mile south of where Reed Creek is located, at which John B. Wade at one time preached. He also preached at a number of places in the country and was perhaps the leader in the constitution of other churches besides those named. It was usual in the early days, when the country was but sparsely settled and churches were few and far apart, to hold religious services at central points, which were [360] called preaching centers or stations, and where there were houses in which services were held, they were called "Meeting Houses." At many of these centers, churches were later constituted.
John B. Wade was quite active as a pioneer preacher, did quite an amount of work along religious lines, and in consideration of his many labors for his Master it may truly be said of him as was once said of another pioneer preacher of our country, "Rude temples of worship in many places sprang into existence at the call of this good man, blooming like wild flowers along the woodland paths."
Rev. John B. Wade is buried at Providence. We do not have the date of his death.
