John Peter Bondurant

John Peter Bondurant [Sr.] was born circa 1710 in King William Parish, Goochland Co., Virginia., He married Sarah Rachael Moseley about 1729 or 1736. John died circa 1774 in Buckingham Co., Virginia.

John Peter Bondurant was listed as a vestryman in King William Parish in 1748. He is first mentioned in his father's will in 1734. John and his wife Sarah lived in Goochland County, Virginia, and later in Cumberland County. He deeded 200 acres of land to his son, John Peter III of Albemarle County, on 9 March 1758.

Sarah was the widow of Robert L Moseley. The Bondurant Family Association Newsletter reprinting information from The Huguenot Magazine, Vol 25, page 173 gives the marriage date as 1836 but indicates date and place not proved.

Grinnell, in his manuscript, indicates that John died in Manakin in 1744. A pedigree chart in The Huguenot, Publication No. 30, submitted by Mary V Bondurant Epling, indicates that John died about 1744 in Buckingham County, but before 1776, and that his death was recorded in Powhatten County. A GEDCOM received from Ruby Talley Smith indicated he died in 1774.

Notes:

In 1776 Boonesborough was again attacked by Indians. That summer Daniel’s daughter Jemima and two daughters of Col. Richard Callaway, were captured by the Shawnees, but rescued two days later.
Another Indian attack was made on Boonesborough in April 1777, and Daniel was wounded. Settlers continue to come into the area.
In January 1778 Daniel led a party of 26 men to the Lower Blue Licks to boil salt. He was captured in February by the Shawnees, but escaped and returned to Boonesborough in June.
September 1778, under the guise of signing a peace treaty with the whites, the Shawnees gather at Fort Boonesborough. They besieged the fort from 7th to 18th September, but the settlers held on, with only two casualties – DAVID BONDURANT, and London, a male slave of Col. Richard Callaway.
In the fall of 1779 Boone led a group of settlers from NC into KY, and they established a new settlement six miles northwest of Boonesborough which they called Boone’s Station.
While in Richmond, VA, in 1780, Daniel Boone was robbed of $20,000 in depreciated Continental scrip, and land certificates (including one from “JOHN BUNDRUM”).

DAVID BONDURANT (BUNDRIN, BUNDIN, BUNDRANT, BUNDRUM)
Now we switch from the life story of Daniel Boone to that of the one white casualty in the 1778 attack by the Shawnees on Boonesborough – David Bondurant.
Kentucky in 1778 was Kentucky District, VA, so its earliest records can be found preserved in the Virginia Archives at Richmond. David Bondurant had come into Kentucky District, and had made a settlement in February 1778 on “Tate’s Creek about three miles from the mouth thereof including the Walnut Bottom,” an area now part of Lexington, KY.
Indians made repeated attacks on small settlements of whites, and with the impending peace treaty with the Shawnees, we presume that David and his wife had gone to Fort Boonesborough to witness the signing. Their home was some miles to the northwest of the fort.
These eyewitness accounts collected by John Filson, and documents gathered by Lyman Draper, give a graphic account of the siege of Boonesborough.

On Friday the 11th of September [1778] .... That night was the severest firing on both sides that occurred during the siege, commingled reports of the firearms and the vivid flashes of powder in quick succession, the one echoing back from the surrounding hills and the other partially exhibiting the dark forest in the distance, rendered the scene one of solemn grandeur. The constant flashes of the guns made it so light in the fort that the smallest article could be seen in every part....
Another tragic event occurred during that busy and exciting night. While DAVID BUNDRIN, a Dutchman who was posted in the south-west bastion, was looking through a port-hole partly closed with a stone, a ball struck close and split, one half penetrating his forehead, producing a mortal wound and rendering him speechless.
A little before day Boone called out to his men to cease firing, as they were necessarily shooting at random and were uncertain of producing any good effects....
He [Bondurant] lived a number of hours, all the while resting his forehead in his hands and his elbows upon his knees, constantly rocking his body in a sitting posture until all his brains by the action had apparently worked out of the wound, sometimes wiping away the oozing brains with his hand. [He is said to have lived 3 days.]
His simple-hearted wife, while her husband was in this dying condition, would consolingly remark, “it vas Got’s plessing dat de pall didn’t hit ‘im in the eye.”
Bundrin was a good soldier and had been wounded in the thigh when at work in the field the preceding spring [1778].
Draper had discovered John Filson’s interviews with survivors of that Boonesborough siege, and built this narrative from Filson’s interview of John Gass, and others. What came as a surprise was that Gass described David Bundrin [Bondurant] as “a Dutchman” and MARRIED. The quote of David’s wife’s comment, in broken English with a German usage, further suggests that it was Mrs. David Bundrin, who is not named further in the interview, who was “Dutch” – at that time the colloquial reference to a German-speaking person, not just a person from Holland.
The Valley of Virginia had a number of settlements of German-speaking citizens who had moved south-westward from Pennsylvania, and may have formerly been “Pennsylvania Dutch.” Was David’s wife one of them?
Might their marriage be found recorded in one of the early church registers or record books; perhaps his surname was mis-spelled, and we’ve missed it in transcriptions and indexes. The marriage would almost certainly have been performed by the minister or in the Meeting to which SHE belonged, and this should provide her name, and possibly parentage.
Calling David a “good soldier” suggests that he may have seen some military service, possibly earlier in the Revolution, or in the French and Indian War. Has anyone seen documentation? I have not; Clint, have you?
All able bodied white males 16 to 45 were required to do militia service in their home county four days a year for drilling, and when called out by the Governor. While this might be considered military service, would David’s contemporary have referred to his appearance at militia musters as making David a good soldier?
Since the settlement made by David Bondurant lay in the Kentucky District of Virginia, inheritance of his land would be governed by Virginia law.

V. And whereas great numbers of people have settled on waste and ungranted lands situate on the Western Waters, to which they have not been able to procure legal titles, and the general convention of Virginia on the 24 June 1776 did “resolve, that all such settlers upon unappropriated lands, to which there was no prior just claim, should have the PREEMPTION or preference to a grant of such lands,” and it is just and reasonable that the lands in their possession thus secured to them should contribute by tax to the common charge....
That all persons who, on or before the 24 June 1776, had bona fide settled themselves, or at his or her charge had settled others, upon any waste and ungranted lands on the said Western Waters, and had not by regular entry, survey, or contract, ascertained the quantity of their claim, shall be allowed for every family so settled 400 acres of land to include such settlement, or such lesser quantity as the person entitled thereto desires....
Had David and his widow had children, his preemption would have passed to the widow and children. That the claim was awarded to JOHN PETER BONDURANT, if David died intestate (as he probably did), suggests that J.P.B. was David’s father.

On this 27th day of January 1840 personally appeared before the County Court of Bedford, of said State at its January term – holden on the said 27th day of January 1840. at the court house of said County Mrs. Celia Fuqua (whose maiden name was Bondurant) a respectable resident of said County, aged 77 years – who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision, made by the act of Congress, passed July 7, 1838, entitled “An act granting half pay and pensions to certain Widows”– That she is the widow of Joseph Fuqua dec’d of said County – who was a private in the regular service, in the revolutionary war. That he enlisted under Cap. Gross Scruggs on the 22nd day Febuary 1776, and served two years as a regular soldier – as will appear from the letter of the 3rd Auditor – which is no doubt true, as she has frequently heard her dec’d husband Joseph Fuqua speak of, and relate his revolutionary services – that she understood him to say that he was at the battle of B. Wine [Battle of Brandywine PA, 11 Sep 1777] St’d [situated?] to the North. And she the said Celia Fuqua, further declares, that she was married to Joseph Fuqua above named in said county by the Rev’d. Jno W Holt, on the 13th day of November 1782, as will appear by the records in Clerks office of said County. That her husband the aforesaid Joseph Fuqua died on the 4th day of May 1829. That she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service, but, the marriage took place previous to the first of January 1794, Viz: at the time above stated. And further that the said Celia Fuqua whose maiden name was Bondurant, has remained unmarried ever since the death of the said Joseph Fuqua her dec’d. husband to the present time – and now claims a pension at the hands of the Gen’l. On this 25th day of May 1840, before me R. C. Steptoe a Justice of the peace in and for said county personally appeared Col. Armistead Otey a respectable resident of said county, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath say – That he is 63 years old that he was well acquainted with Joseph Fuqua dec’d (a Revolutionary soldier of the United States whose widow Celia Fuqua is now living) some thirty years previous to his death – which was about the year 1829 – and he this deponant has always regarded Mr. Joseph Fuqua above named as a man in independent circumstances – that from the year 1818 to 1829 the time of his death he was the owner of a valuable tract of Land near Liberty in said County and also many negroes, and other pinshable[?] property – and in fact at no time while deponant knew him could he have applied for a Pension under the law of 1818 – which as deponant understands it – grants pensions only to needy persons – or to persons who owns but little property – and further that he Fuqua left his widow in quite independent circumstances when he died. A grandson of Ephraim's sister Celia was Galba Fuqua, who died at the Alamo at age 17.

In March 1808, Ephraim Bondurant, David Bondurant, Jeremiah Lockett, and David Lockett filed a bond of injunction against Joseph Taylor in Bedford County Chancery Court. This indicates that Ephraim was born prior to March 1787, and probably earlier.

Benjamin Fuqua first joined the Austin Colony in 1828, but moved to the DeWitt Colony in 1830where he received a quarter league of land as a single man on the San Marcos River north of Gonzales just inside current Guadalupe County. The following letter from Richard Ellis in Alabama recommended the Fuquas to Stephen F. Austin:
"State of Alabama, Town of Tuscumbia 3rd Jany. 1828 D COLO I beg leave to introduce to your aquantence and notice Mr Silus, Ephram and Benjmn Fuqua and Mr Job Ingram and Kye Ingram, these Gentlemen have emigrated to your Coloney to become permanent settlers---The Mr Fuquas are Mechanics. two of them of the best kind; they are honest and respectable men and are determined to suport the Government to which they go, I have had much conversation with Mr Silus Fuqua, on the present and future prospects of your coloney; and tho he has never seen it, he has a most corect idea of its great advantages, you will find him an inteligent man and I have no doubt will be an acquisition to your Setlement, I have known these gentlemen twelve years, the Mr Ingrams I have not known personaly but from their universal good character and the Gentlemen they go with, I feel no hesitation to recomend them to your attention...........RICHARD ELLIS."
Benjamin was a representative from the Austin Municipality and a signer of the Declaration of the People of Texas declaring the intention of Texans to fight for the restoration of the Constitution of 1824 and support of a separate state of Texas within the Republic of Mexico. He was a mechanic (artisan) and mercantile businessman and was said to have owned the structure in inner Gonzales town called Luna which has been suggested as possibly one of the Grog Shops alluded to in David Edwards History of Texas. It may simply have been Benjamin Fuqua's general business establishment. Luna was on property deeded to Benjamin's brother Silas Fuqua who was a neighbor of John King. Benjamin Fuqua married King's oldest daughter Nancy. Benjamin Fuqua's nephew, Galba Fuqua and nephew by marriage, William King (Nancy King Fuqua's brother), were members of the Gonzales Relief Force to the Alamo and both died there in Mar 1836.

Silas Fuqua was born to a prominent family of French Huguenots in Virginia. He and several of his brothers migrated to Alabama when it was still a territory. He first appears on tax lists there in 1810 and patented land in 1812 and 1819 in Madison County near Huntsville. He married Sally Young in 1814.
Genealogists have listed Sally's name as Sally Taney based on information from a Fuqua family Bible. However, I believe this is a mistranscription of the name. There are no Taneys listed in either Bedford County, Virginia, where the Fuquas originated, nor in Madison County, Alabama where Silas is recorded as having married.There are however, numerous Toneys listed in both counties including the husband of her grandmother Celia Bondurant Fuqua's sister. Since the wedding certificate for Silas and Sally lists her name as Sally Young, she was either a 17 year old widow when she married Silas or her maiden name was Young and Toney was her middle name.

Sally died in 1825, the same year that Silas and his brother Benjamin bought land in northwestern Alabama in what is now Colbert County. By 1828, he and Benjamin who was unmarried, and Silas's children journeyed north to join the Tennessee-Texas Land Company and then traveled in a group to Texas. They settled first in the Austin Colony but moved two years later to the DeWitt Colony where they both received large land grants. Unfortunately, Silas died shortly after and is believed buried in the Fuqua Family Cemetery though his gravestone and location have been lost.

The following letter from Richard Ellis in Alabama recommended the Fuquas to Stephen F. Austin:

Silas and Sally had the following children, all born in Alabama, all died in Texas with the exception of Lucas who went back to Alabama. Silas had a large personal library and he named his sons Galba and Fabius after Roman generals.

Benjamin Fuqua first joined the Austin Colony in 1828, but moved to the DeWitt Colony in 1830 where he received a quarter league of land as a single man on the San Marcos River north of Gonzales just inside current Guadalupe County.

Benjamin was a representative from the Austin Municipality and a signer of the Declaration of the People of Texas declaring the intention of Texans to fight for the restoration of the Constitution of 1824 and support of a separate state of Texas within the Republic of Mexico. He was a mechanic (artisan) and mercantile businessman and was said to have owned the structure in inner Gonzales town called Luna which has been suggested as possibly one of the Grog Shops alluded to in David Edwards History of Texas. In Joseph Fuqua's Will (b. 7 p. 179) Bedford Clerks office, he writes of his deceased daughter's children leaving them one child's part of his estate in trust until they become of legal age. Milly died young, around 1829. She was buried in Fuqua graveyard that was set aside in Joseph Fuqua's will on Orange Street, Bedford City, Virginia.

I am FANNY SMITH HARRIS----The wife of Moses Harris. He is a great man, well respected, and I love him. When people speak about Moses they forget that I ever existed.
I was with him when he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We were baptized at the same time, along with his sister Margaret.
I was there when good byes were said to parents and family. They were hard times.
I was there when a dark dreary day was lighted with a ball of fire. It frightened two of our girls because of its intensity. They were coming home from playing with some friends. This happened when the Prophet and his brother Hyrum were murdered.
I was with Moses when we were driven out of Illinois and out into an unknown country.
I was there when a young boy was sent to communicate with his father. When the boy jumped off his horse the saddle blanket fell to the ground and frightened a team of oxen. They started to run away and taking with them the remains of what the owners had managed to bring with them. This oxen team FRIGHTENED other teams and a stampeed ensued.
Precious Margaret was holding the reigns of an ox team. She became frightened and jumped from the wagon. She fell and other ox teams ran over her and many cattle. She was buried the next day along with many others who met the same fate.
I was there when a vicious armed mob forced us to leave our home in DeWitt, Missouri.
I was there when we had to flee from our beautiful Nauvoo home into a trackless desert.
I was there when we were driven from our spacious homestead in California by Johnston's army into a drought stricken area, disease infested, called the Cotton Mission.
I was there when savages ransacked our home and forced us again to move.

My husband wondered why I was gaining weight when there was so little to eat and our daily life was nothing but hardships. He didn't fully realize until I presented him with another mouth to feed. We just did not talk about these things, even to our husbands. These were special and sacred events and were not to be discussed. I managed to surprise him every two years.

I grieved at the loss of four of our children, but I had to go on. My testimony was strong and I knew that we had the Lord on our side.
I made friends with most of the Indians that came to our door. I loved to feed them and they liked me. Some of the Indians were hostile and I had to outwit them.
I gave all I had to help my husband, my children, my church. I even gave my inheritance, my labor and my love. I look forward to the future time when all of us will be together in the Celestial realms on high.

Now, may I say: "As we ponder the history of nations and peoples and read the fragments of written records left by them, we see men and women much like ourselves who struggled and pressed forward doing the best they could with the elements at hand. Some traveled by foot over desert wastelands, others lived in palatial splendor, and others crossed unknown lands and waters in search of a better life.

Among these millions are those to whom we owe a special tribute--they are ours--they preceded us in life and laid the foundation for the world we live in. They are they who fought for our freedom, challenged the wilderness, crossed the prairies, and embraced the gospel in its infancy. Fanny Smith Harris, along with her husband Moses was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 27 Feb. 1833. Their farewell parting was a hard one for them as they left to join the rest of the Saints. Their parents were not in favor of their decision to join the Mormons, but hey had heard the truth and were determined to do what ever was asked of them. Fanny came from a home of much love and refinement. She lived a shielded, comfortable life with her parents. It was a shocking life for her to be driven from their home with only what the wagon would hold. She loved the Church and supported her husband in his decisions. At Zarahemla, where they stopped she lost three of her children from a terrible disease. They finally continued on and arrived at Council Bluff just in time to enroll their oldest son into the Mormon Battalion. Because of the extreme hardships Moses health began to fail him, and because of this, Fanny shouldered a tremendous amount of the responsibility along with her second son, John. Fanny was a great nurse for her husband, so along with her faith and diligence Moses survived. When Silas arrived home from the Mormon Battalion they left for the trek west arriving in the Salt Lake Valley Oct. 15, 1849 with the Reddick N. Allred Company of 50. They settled in Bountiful. There they built a home and were settled in comfortably when the call came for them to leave their home to go to San Bernardino. Happy was Fanny to build another home in such a beautiful fertile valley When Johnston's army threatened the life of any Mormon, so by the advice of their Prophet, Brigham Young, they were to leave their San Bernardino home and find refuge in Washington, Washington County, Utah. They lived there for about a year, then in the spring of 1859 Moses and two his married sons, Silas and William and their families, together with several other families settled Harrisville, located at the confluence of Quail Creek and the Virgin River. Then in the spring of 1861 Harrisville was abandoned and the settlers moved some three miles up the creek (north) and settled Harrisburg.

Fanny was a life-member of the Relief Society and received a certificate for her dedication and compassion in her callings. She was a dedicated wife, a loving mother, tender and compassionate to everyone. She knew how to stand her ground in face of difficulty or her rights. Her faith was her guiding star and by that she won many a battle.

She experienced depredations with the Indians. She made friends with them and fed them often, but when kindness and food would not suffice she fled from them. Many times she was alone with her little children and it was her duty to protect them, and she did.

Fanny learned how to be frugal and by so doing helped Moses over many an obstacle.

In a Virginia Chancery case 1896-1901, Fleming Saunders, age 66, testified to knowing William B Bondurant "from his earliest youth"; that William "lived where he was born". Mr Saunders also stated that William's father worked as a manager for his grandmother (Alice Watts). This refers to Ephraim, who worked as an overseer for Judge Fleming Saunders family since about 1814. Ephraim and his wife Elizabeth witnessed the will of Mary Watts, Fleming Saunders' aunt in 1836. Ephraim's and William's occupations were listed as Overseer in the 1850 census, as well as living adjacent to the above Fleming Saunders.

After William died in 1896, his 2nd wife Hester, as administratrix, presented claims against William's estate on behalf of her 2 children from a prior marriage. She did this without the knowledge of the other heirs, William's children. Following is the link for the related case:
