    Transcription of Will: Thomas Chattin

    In the name of God Amen I Thomas Chattin of the county of Pittsylvania and state of Virginia being of sound mind and memory do make this my last will and Testament I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who give it. My body I recommend to the earth to be buried in christian burrial first that my just debts all to be paid. I lend my wife Elizabeth Chattin fifty acres of land including my dwelling house during her natural life and after her death the said fifty acres of land is to return back to my Estate to be equally divided between my children
    I also lend my wife Elizabeth Chattin one negro boy by the name of Alford during her natural life provided she does not carry him or cause him to be carried out of the county of Pittsylvania and after her death the said negro boy Alford is to return back to my estate to be equally divided between all my children. and as such things a my wife brought with her when we were married she is to retain as her own. namely two feather beds and all the money she had before our marriage she to retains as her own and my Executors are to have nothing to do with it.
    I give to my daughter Lucy Duncan one equal part of my estate and at her death to be divided if anything betwen her children equally she having received of me fifty dollars advancement of me.
    I give to my son Robert Chattin one equal part of my estate he having received of me two hundred and twenty five dollars in advancement
    I give to my grand children the children of my daughter Sarah Motley one equal part of my estate she having received of me fifty dollars in advancement the above name grand children to have there mothers part
    I give to my son John Chattin one equal part of my estate he having received of me in advance two hundred and twenty five dollars.
    I give to my son William Chattin one equal part of my estate he having recieved of me in advance two hundred and twenty five dollars namely a bond on me for two hundred dollars and the other ballance I give him in money
    I give to my daughter Susan Motley one equal part of my estate she having received of me fifty dollars as advancement
    I give to my son Nathaniel Chattin one equal part of my estate he having received of me two hundred and twenty five dollars in advance
    I give to Polley and one equal part of my estate and after her death to her children she having reced in of me in advance fifty dollars
    I give to my son Jesse Chattin one equal part of my estate he having received two hundred and twenty five dollars in advance.
    I give to my daughter Fanny Waller one equal part of my estate she having received of me fifty dollars in advance and after her death to be divided between all her children.
    I give to my son Thomas Chattin one equal part of my estate he having received of me two hundred and twenty dollars in advance
    The fifty acres of land that I lent my wife Elizabeth Chattin. she is to hold provided she does not rent it out, and she will stay on herself this 4th day of June 1853

    At a county Court held for the County of Pittsylvania on the 21st day of January 1857 The last Will & Testament of Thomas Chattin Decd was proved by Jamison Corbin and William Corbin the two subscribing Witnesses to be and was ordered to be recorded. Where upon Elizabeth Chattin widow of said Testator appeared in court and renounced the provision made for her by the said will and doth refuse to qualify as Administratix of said estate-

    And at another day to wit- At a county court held for the county of Pittsylvania on the 15th day of February 1857 on the motion of Jesse F Atkinson who made oath and with Scarlet M Atkinson and Jno A Adams as his sureties entered into and entered into and aknowledged in the penalty of one thousand dollars conditioned according to a certificate is granted him for obtaining letters of administration on the estate of Thomas Chattin Decd with his will annexed in due form
