POLITICS: He was surety for his father, Oct 1141, then a prisoner at Rochester, in the exchange with King Stephen, whom Earl Robert had captured at Lincoln in Feb 1140/1141; made an alliance with Roger, Earl of Hereford, in 1154, by which they agreed to aid each other against all men except King Henry; in 1173 took the King's part against his sons; in Oct 1173 he went to the King's forces at the battle of Fornham, when the Earl of Leicester was taken prisoner; submitted to the King, 1174; surrendered Bristol Castle to the King, 1175; the King, during his struggle with his sons imprisoned a number of magnates of whose loyalty he was doubtful, William, Earl of Gloucester, being among them.
