- Matt enlisted Nov. 6, 1862 at Wartrace (just 4 or 5 miles from Fairfield) for 3 years and was a Private in Martin's Reg, Company D 23 Tenn Reg CSA. Later he was assigned to Cleburne's Div, Hardie's Corps, A.T., and was severely wonded in the side in the Battle of Murfreesboro on December 21, 1862. He was listed as AWOL on Jan 1863 Muster Roll as he had gone home in Bedford County -- where he died and was buried at the Shelton Graveyard.
He and his wife Sarah did not have any children.
