  Excommunication From Barnstable Three Centuries of a Cape Cod Town by Donald G. Trayser 1939 Chapter The First Church-Interim Years, page 40 Immediately after his ordination Mr. Russel had to deal with Bethia, granddaughter of John Lothrop and wife of John Hinckley. She was then thirty-four years old but had been for some time "Left of God" and of "disorderly conversation." Her discipline has greater space in the records than anything else that occurred in Mr. Russell's pastorate, 1683-1711/2. It centered on her not being "a meet help to her husband" and of not carrying with "A loving humble reverence toward her husband as is required in Ephesians." It was another bit of drama in Hinckley family life since her husband's brother was at this time governor of Plymouth colony, his sister, the widow of Elder Henry Cobb, and the surviving ruling elder w2as more than thirty years older than the young minister, we can expect no other verdict than excommunication. The greatest scandal was her "truning her back" and laughing In ye Church wn they wer dealing with her"
