  18 Skagen Ploug & Sundt. Ole Smith Ploug (1738-1792) founded the company in 1769 on his parents' farm in Skagen 18. It was a waterfront residential and commercial building with salesrooms. He was a shipowner, a dealer in herring and salt and other things. In 1791 Ole Smith Ploug took the orphaned cousin Hans Gabriel Buchholm Sundt (1768-1839) with him as a partner and changed his name to Ploug & Sundt. In 1792 he took over the entire company after Oles' death and married the widow, Maria Henrica Ploug, in 1796. He expanded the trading house with shipbuilding, herring fishing, salt works, timber trade and a retail business. After Sundt's death in 1839, Lauritz Wilhelm Hansen (1816-1871) continued the company with branches in the shipping business of herring export and trade. In 1871 his son Hans Wilhelm Severin Hansen (1841-1919) took over both Ploug & Sundt and the trading house JA Köhler & Co. Both trading houses went bankrupt in the crisis year 1883.
