  Tonti Township... "Robert NICHOLS, the oldest of fourteen brothers and four sisters, several of whom settled in this county, located in the north-west part of the township, where he improved a farm in 1823, and resided until his death in 1836. William NICHOLS settled in the north-east part of the township in 1823. He owned a slave, and in 1826 moved to Missouri. Wm. MARSHLL bought his improvements. The place afterwards fell into the hands of John S. MARTIN, who lived here for many years. MARTIN was an enterprising and intelligent man, and came here with some considerable means. At one time he owned about two thousand acres of land in this vicinity, and for many years filled the office of Justice of the Peace. He died at Alma in 1865."
