Notes |
- There appears to have been at least two people with the name Edward Atkins in Pittsylvania Co., Va. about the same time. One was Edward that married Mary Frye whose father was George Frye. This Mary Frye married Edward Adkins on March 16, 1792 in Pittsylvania Co., Va. Research done in Lunenburg Co., Va. and Pittsylvania Co., Va. is most convincing that Edward Atkins, son of John in Lunenburg Co., Va. was married to Mary Sullivant. Mary's father, John Sullivant, made his will on August 3, 1750 and was probated October 2, 1750, WBI, 1746-1762, Lunenburg Co., Va. In this will he names four daughters to whom he is giving 800 acres of land on the north side of Twittys Creek. One of these daughters is Mary Sullivant. Among his sons he names a James Sullivant. Mary's share of this land was 200 acres. In an indenture dated Feb. 5, 1770 in Charlotte Co., Va., DB2, pp. 266-267 we find Edward Atkins, Mary Atkins and James Sullivant selling 200 acres on Twittys Creek. Mary relinquishes her dower rights. It appears to be same land of Mary's inheritance. It was not clear why James was involved in the transaction. When John Sullivant wrote his will this land was in Lunenburg Co. and by 1764 this area was Charlotte Co. It appears that Edward's mother was deceased by March 5, 1765. WB2, p. 245; Lunenburg Co., Va. And Edward was to receive the home place at the mothers death. No marriage record found. In Pittsylvania Co., Va., DB 4, p. 394 an indenture dated June 30, 1777 Edward is buying land and this appears to be his first appearance in said county. In 1779 he sells 376 acres on the E. Fork of Strawberry Creek with all appurtenances. DB 11, p. 398; P. Co., Va. On Nov. 7, 1789, Jan. 6, 1796 and Jan. 16, 1796 he buys land on Bearskin Creek. DB8, p. 129; DB10, pp. 278-279; P. Co., Va. This is beautiful, lush and rolling farm land. This is where Edward died and most likely is buried on this farm. Another fact to help prove that this Mary was Edward's wife. It is known that Edward's siblings went to SC and there we find Manoah Sullivant, Mary's brother, also. In 1782 Edward was taxed for 700 acres in P. Co., Va.
