Notes |
- Benjamin Echols, Early Settler
In 1784 Franklin County's northern border divided the Cherokee Indian Land from the newly formed county. This county was still a wilderness when the first settlers arrived and they had hard work clearing and building their log homes. The Superior Court for the new land chose the home of Warren Philpot to be the site for the first courts, but in February 1787, the site was changed to the home of Benjamin Acles ( Echols) and this became the location for the first courts. The courthouse was built in 1793.
Benjamin married his cousin Sabra Hendrick around 1755 and they had eight children. Benjamin and his family lived on Estanolle Creek in Franklin County, Georgia which was an area with rich farm land. In 1788 he became the Justice of Peace and held this position for several years. Many land deeds can be found where he buys and sells land and in 1806 he is living adj. his daughter Sabra and her husband Ambrose Downs on Estanolle Creek.
His wife, Sabra died in 1818 and the next year he left Georgia to live with his son, John who lived in Monroe County, Mississippi. John became the administrator of his father's will in 1828. The papers mention that he paid Isaac Dyche for moving him and a family of slaves from Jackson County, Ga. ( Jackson County was taken from Franklin County). He was buried in Mississippi.
