Fear Allerton née Brewster (c. 1606 - before December 12, 1634) was a woman in Colonial America. She was the third daughter of Mayflower Pilgrim William Brewster and his wife Mary, born in Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England. She was named Fear because at the time of her birth, the Puritans were holding secret meetings and were under constant threat of arrest. Her early years, and indeed her whole life, were full of unrest. In 1608 she moved, along with the other pilgrims, to Amsterdam (and later Leiden).

Fear was only 14 when her parents and two younger brothers, Love and Wrestling, left for America on the Mayflower. She was left in the care of her older siblings, Jonathan (born in 1593) and Patience (born in 1600). Jonathan joined the pilgrims in 1621 on board the Fortune. Fear arrived in America with Patience on board the Anne in July 1623.

Fear married Isaac Allerton, another Mayflower pilgrim, around 1626. He was 20 years her senior. They had a son, Isaac Allerton Jr., born about 1627. There is speculation that they had a daughter, Sarah Allerton, who was baptised on August 13, 1633 and probably died in infancy.

Fear died young, but the exact date is unknown. She died sometime before her sister Patience's death December 12, 1634.

    Samuel Travers's Will

On Sep 7, 1698 an order was given to appraise the estate of Captain Samuel Travers, deceased. Samuel Travers left a will but it has been lost.

On Feb 6 1705/6 Elizabeth Travers, daughter of Samuel Travers, dec. petitioned that her father's will was proved in Richmond Co., naming as executors his wife Frances, his dau. Elizabeth and his brother Capt Rawleigh Travers. The widow died "soon after". Rawleigh died leaving his brother's estate intermingled with his own. Elizabeth, sole surviving executor and now of age, demanded that the executors of her uncle render up to her the unadministered part of her father's estate. The petition was granted and it was ordered that the estates be divided.

The distribution of the estate of Samuel Travers on Feb 17, 1721/2 was made to the daughters specified in the will of Samuel Travers.

    Notes:

Colston was her 2nd husband: Her first husband, John Taverner, died so young and, apparently, not long after they were married. Women could not own property and had no one to take care of them unless they had adult children to do that. Males who lost a spouse and had children also needed to remarry quickly. It was not uncommon to remarry within weeks after losing a spouse.

    Notes:

    Who Was Thomas' Father?

Thomas Maxey Hampton's parentage is pure speculation at this time and based on the following arguments:

    1) Thomas was born in Jackson Co., Georgia abt 1800.

    2) George, Joseph, Benjamin and John (all brothers) are on the Tax Index for Jackson Co., Georgia in 1799. They are the sons of William and Lydia Hampton. All of them lived in Abbeville, North Carolina for a while and William died there. George may have died there as well. John raised his family in Jackson Co., Georgia and the others may have lived there briefly as well.

    3) Thomas named his firstborn son George Claiborn Hampton... Claiborn was for Olive's father and George may have been for Thomas' father.

    4) On March 7, 1809, I found a George Hampton in Jackson Co., witnessing a will along with Job Rogers.

    5) On January 7, 1811, I found George Hampton in Jackson Co., giving an oath along with Job Rogers.

Wife: Sally. Sons: William, John, Matthew, Baker, Christopher, Francis, Allen. Daus: JimmySmith, Polly, Patsy, Agnes. Exrs:John, Matthaw and Baker Hobson. Wits: George Hampton, Job Rogers.

Joseph Humphrey (1745-1811) who married Rebecca Phelps. They lived in Franklin County. His LWT was produced in the Jackson Court Ordinary by the oaths of Job Rogers and George Hampton on 7 January 1811.

    6) Found a marriage in Frederick Co., Virginia between a George Hampton and Winney Howell on Aug 5, 1787. The date would work for parents of Thomas. The problem is, on the same page I found a marriage for a Joseph Hampton to a Nancy Ann Tate in 1796. This Joseph married Ann Nancy Tate and is the son of George Hampton and Mary Colson who also had a son named George. This could be the George who married Winney Howell. This George and Joseph are only a couple years younger than our George and Joseph.

    GEORGE HAMPTON
    of Georgia

John Hampton applied for revolutionary pension while living in Jackson
County, Georgia. He entered the service in North Carolina in 1778 and
participated in General John Ashe's Defeat at Briar Greek, Georgia. He served
with General Thomas Sumter's forces in engagements at Ramsour's Mill, King's
Mountain, Fishing Creek and Musgrove's Mill. Captain Wade Hampton, General
Andrew Pickins, Colonel John Purvis and Captain Williams are mentioned in the
    application papers.

Subject: Re: [GEORGIA-L] Georgia 1827 Land Lottery
    Date: Wed, 18 Feb 1998 14:13:36 EST
Starting in 1805, Georgia dispensed lands acquired from the Indians to Georgia
residents through lotteries. The statewide registration has survived for the
1805 lottery but except for a few scattered county lists of registrants, only
the names of the winners are known for the 1807, 1820, 1821, 1827, and 1832
lotteries. Revolutionary War veterans only had to be Georgia residents at the
time of the lotteries to qualify for their extra chances and they were not
required to make any statement as to specifically where or when they served in
    the American Revolution.
Most Georgians never saw the land lots that they won but sold their lots to
land speculators who in turn sold the lots to families that migrated to
Georgia from other states. This situation was particularly true for the 1832
lotteries in northwest Georgia. Many Georgians did not claim the lots that
they won because the lots were not considered worth even the fee to have them
granted. Unclaimed lots reverted to the state of Georgia and were sold at
auction, along with fractional lots which were withheld from the lottery
because they were not the standard size. Lots won in the 1832 lotteries that
were still occupied by the Indians were withheld until the indians were
    removed in 1838.
The 1805 land lottery was for dispensing the 202 1/2 acre land lots in
original Baldwin and Wilkinson counties and the 490 acre land lots in original
Wayne County. Qualifications for this lottery included single males, heads of
households, and orphans. A person had to be a resident of Georgia since May
11, 1802 to qualify for chances in this lottery.
The 1807 land lottery was for dispensing additional 202 1/2 acre lots in
original Baldwin and Wilkinson counties. Qualifications for this lottery were
the same as for the 1805 lottery except that single women and widows without
children could participate. Registrants had to be residents of the state of
Georgia since June 26, 1803 to qualify for the 1807 lottery.
The 1820 land lottery was for dispensing the 490 acre lots in original
Appling, Irwin, and Rabun counties and the 250 acre lots in original Early,
Gwinnett, Habersham, Hall, Rabun, and Walton counties. Qualifications for
this lottery were the same as for the 1805 lottery except extra chances were
allowed to some veterans, widows, and orphans of the war of 1812. Registrants
had to be residents of the state of Georgia since December 15, 1815.
The 1821 land lottery was for dispensing the 202 1/2 acre lots in original
Dooly, Fayette, Henry, Houston, and Monroe counties. Qualifications were the
same as for the 1820 lottery. Registrants had to be residents of the state of
    Georgia since May 15, 1818.
The 1827 land lottery was for dispensing the 202 1/2 acre lots of original
Carroll (or the 5th section), Coweta (or the 4th section), Lee (or the 1st
section), Muscogee (or the 2nd section) and Troup (or the 3rd section)
counties. Qualifications were the same as for the 1820 lottery except that
the physically and mentally handicapped were given extra chances and abandoned
    wives and
children were treated the same as widows and orphans, respectively.
Registrants for the 1827 land lottery had to be residents of the state of
    Georgia since January 1, 1824.
The 1832 land lottery was for dispensing the land lots of 100 to 160 acres
each in the four sections of original Cherokee County, what is today northwest
    Georgia.
