When King James I assumed responsibility for the colony of Virginia after he dissolved the Virginia Company of London in 1624, he ordered Virginia's leaders to make a record of the colony's inhabitants and their provisions. RICHARD KINGSMILL (spelt Kingsmell) with his wife Jane, son Nathaniell (aged 5) and daughter Susan (aged 1) were resident at the 'Neck-of-Land' near 'James Citty' in the Virgina Muster (survey) of 4th February 1624/25. His servants are recorded as Horten Wright, John Jackson, Isbell Pratt and Edward (a negro). Richard arrived on the ship 'Delaware' while his wife and servant on the ship 'Susan'. This is the first census ever held in America. There is no record of Daniel Lucy in the survey as her arrived in Jamestown later the same year. Richard Kingsmill owned five houses and one boat at this location.

In 1619 the second church minister at Jamestown, the Rev. Richard Buck (1582-1624) had patented 750 acres of land in the 'Neck-of-Land' for the first time; the land separated by water from the north side of Jamestown Island. Buck apparently relied on indentured servants to improve the land, including his caretaker, Richard Kingsmill. On Buck's death in 1624, the land passed to his caretaker and Richard became the guardian of his children. In 1624 there were many transient tenants working the land on 100-200 acre plots, primarily for Kingsmill, who also owned a house in Jamestown and served on the General Assemblies of 1624, 1625 and 1629. Both Richard and his wife had died by 1638 leaving an only heir, their daughter Elizabeth who was born at 'Neck-of-Land' in 1625. This area eventually became known as the Kingsmill tobacco plantation.

The surname of LUCY was a locational name 'of Luci', a parish in the arrondissement of Neufchatel in Normandy, France. The name was borne by a young Sicilian maiden and an aged Roman widow, both martyred under Diocletian and venerated as saints. Local names derive from a place name, indicating where the man held land, or the place from which he had come, or where he actually lived. Many of the French place-names denote the seat of noble families, but many of the modern surnames merely indicate migration from a French place. The name was taken to Ireland by settlers from Oxfordshire, where it was spelt O'Luasaigh, mainly a County Cork name. The earliest French hereditary surnames are found in the 12th century, at more or less the same time as they arose in England, but they are by no means common before the 13th century, and it was not until the 15th century that they stabilized to any great extent; before then a surname might be handed down for two or three generations, but then abandoned in favour of another. In the south, many French surnames have come in from Italy over the centuries, and in Northern France, Germanic influence can often be detected. When the sparse Irish population began to increase it became necessary to broaden the base of personal identification by moving from single names to a more definite nomenclature. The prefix MAC was given to the father's christian name, or O to that of a grandfather or even earlier ancestor. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped and flowing garment worn over the armour. Early records of the name mention Godfrey de Lucey of the County of Lincolnshire in 1273. Reginald de Lucy was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379.A powerful Anglo-Norman family called Lucy, took their name from Luce in Orne, Normandy. Richard de Lucy (died 1179) was a baron and chief justiciary of England. He fought in Normandy and commanded the castle of Falaise, returning to England in 1140. His son Godfrey de Lucy (died 1204) became bishop of Winchester in 1189.

To authorise the administrator of the estate of Cadwallader Lucy, dec'd. to sell and convey certain certificates of land, upon which one payment only has been made.

convened, That Benjamin P. Whitlow, administrator of the estate of the said Cadwallader Lucy, deceased, be, and he
is hereby authorised to sell and dispose of the certificates for the south west quarter of section numbered thirty two, in township eleven, range three west, and the north west quarter of section thirty, in township eleven, range three, west, in the district of lands sold at St. Stephens; upon which one payment only has been made, belonging to the estate of the said Cadwallader Lucy, on giving thirty days notice in some public newspaper printed in the town of Cahawba, of the time and place of selling the same.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the said certificate of land shall be sold on a credit of not less than six months, and the said sale shall in all other respects, be under the same rule and regulations as are now required by the laws in relation to intestate's estates.

Joseph Allen was born just before 1765, probably in Virginia. He received a Military Land Warrant #848 for three years' service in the Virginia line on 17 June 1783. He is listed as serving in the 2nd Virginia Brigade or State Line, Colonel Marshall's Artillery Regiment.
What is now Kentucky was previously part of the state of Virginia. In December 1776 Kentucky Co., Virginia was created. In 1780 it was divided into Fayette, Jefferson and Lincoln Counties. In 1785, Bourbon County was created from Fayette County and Joseph appears on 19 Sep 1787 (?) as a signer of a petition to the state of Virginia to create Bourbon County. Mason County was formed from Bourbon County in 1788 and finally in 1798 Fleming County was formed from Mason County. Joseph Allen had lived in four counties without moving.

On 3 Sep 1788 Joseph Allen married Dorothy Walker in Bourbon Co., Kentucky. Thought Dorothy was listed as "of age" her guardians were George and Eliza? Elijah Wood.

On 21 Aug 1790, Joseph Allen appears as the only Allen in the 1790 Kentucky Tax List.

On 27 August 1793 Joseph Allen purchased lot #42 in the town of Washington, Mason Co., Kentucky from William Wood and Arthur Fox and their wives. This town was developed as a possible capitol city for Kentucky. Joseph is listed there in the census as a blue dyer by occupation.

Joseph and Dorothy Allen were the parents of at least nine children-five girls and four boys. Daughters were Nancy m. Nathaniel Chandler, Mariah m. Nathaniel Chandler (after death of her sister), Margaret m. William McCord Sr., and Elizabeth who married Thomas Owen Caywood. Sons were James F. Allen who married Mary Hyzer, Joseph, Henry L. Allen who married Elizabeth Sullivan and William H Allen who married Eliza Reader. Many descendants of this family moved into Daviess County, Indiana.

In 1793 Joseph Allen was appointed in Mason County as a trustee for land and boundary formation.
Joseph Allen appears in the 1800 census of Kentucky in Mason County. Other Allens in that county were Adam, Barnabas, Hugh, and William. A Robert Allen appeared in Fleming Co. Joseph Allen appears in the 1810 Census of Mason County, Kentucky (with four male children and five female children in addition to himself and Elizabeth, his wife). Joseph Allen appears in the 1820 census of Fleming Co, Kentucky with one male 45+, a female 26-45, a female 16-26, and one male and one female 0-10.

Shortly after, Joseph Allen died 24 September 1822 in Fleming County, Kentucky. His estate bill of sale named William Mc Cord, Sr. as the administrator. Among those purchasing items at the sale were: Benjamin Allen, William Frealts, Nathaniel Chandler, William McCord, John McCord, Jr., Thomas Caywood, Thomas McCarty, Joseph Thomson, William McCord Sr., John McCord, Jesse Hickman, James McCord Jr., James McCord, and Erasmus Caywood.
Items found in the sale included ten books, a Bible, a razor and razor strap, a set of weights, a sifter, two candlesticks, two smoothing irons, a sprouting hoe, a shovel, a coffee mill,a pair of knives and forks, two hoes, a keg, an ink stand, two buckets, a teakettle, a pair of snuffers, a big wheel, a bell, three bedstands, a blanket, a hackel, six chairs, a chest, two big kettles, a pot, a tub, a big coat, a coat, two pair pantaloons, a hat, a pair of shoes, a table, a candlestand, two washing tubs, a pair of specks, a howel, thirteen big spools and Chandler's note worth $733. One wonders what his widow used to live with after he died! However, the number of books and writing tools indicate literacy.

James Allen was born in Mason County, Kentucky in 1789. Kentucky at that time was part of Virginia. Daniel Boone blazed a trail through the Cumberland Gap, founded Boonesborough which was the 1st chartered town in Kentucky, and lived there from 1775 to 1779.
Mason County was formed in 1788 and Kentucky became a state in 1792.His Dad, Joseph Allen, was in the Virginia Line of the Revolutionary War, and appeared in the 1790 and 1800 US Census.
James married Mary Hyzer in Mason County March 20, 1810. He was 20, just 2 months shy of his 21st birthday and she was 19. They had their 1st 5 Children in Mason County. Then left for Indiana in 1819 where James bought land in Reeve Township, Daviess County. Indiana had just become the 19th state in 1816 so once again the Allen family were true pioneers.
The Allen Family farm is located about 2 miles SouthWest of Alfordsville but, of course there was no Alfordsville then, not till 1850. He and his sons cleared the land and like nearly all of the early settlers there were farmers.
1n 1823 his Mother-in-law, Elizabeth Zumwakt Hyzer, died and was buried where Old Union Church and Cemetery is now. She was the 1st person buried at Old Union. James with a couple of his friends would build a raft, load it up with produce and furs, and float down the White River, to the Ohio, to the Mississippi, and on down to New Orleans where they would sell their load as well as the raft then walk back to Indiana. About in 1835 he didn't return - could have been a wreck of the raft on the river, killed by Indians or the Cave In The Rock gang from southern Illinois, or a robber in the city. He left Mary with 11 kids, the youngest was Eliza who was only 4.
Mary never remarried and it was up to the oldest,Charles,to farm the land and help keep the family together.
