Lived in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent county, x699. In the Parish Register are entries of the baptism of Walter and James, children of Henry Chiles, Gent., (699-1706.)

He was elected a vestryman of St. Peter's Parish in 1702. In the records he is called Capt. Chiles. (St. Peter's Par. Reg., p. 73.)

An old deed, found by the writer in the Clerk's office of King Wil- liam county, transfers from Richard Littlepage, Gent., and Frances, his wife, November 2, 1702, 400 acres in King William, formerly King and Queen, on the north side of Paniunkey River, to Henry Chiles, Gent., of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent. He was a justice in New Kent in 1714. (Va. Hist. Mag., II, 9.)

--A King William Courhouse deed dated 20 Nov 1702 records Henry Chiles, Gent, of New Kent purchasing 492 acres on the Pamunkey River from Richard Littlepage, Gent, of New Kent, and Frances his wife. It is a three page deed and very full in describing the transaction.
--On the Quit Rent Rolls (Tax Rolls) Henry was listed as owning 700 acres of land in King William County in 1704 and also 700 acres in New Kent County in the Parish of St. Peters and St. Pauls. (pg. 17)
--Henry married first Margaret Littlepage, and 2nd Mary (last name unknown. who 2ndly married a Mr. Howe).
--In 1671 there is a record of Henry Sr. in the Countil Journal MSS when his father Walter, appears on behalf of his sons John and Henry regarding land in Westmoreland County on 4 April 1671. (pg. 16)
--There is a deed in from Mary Howe, Orange Co., Virginia dated 17 Jun 1765 that mentions certain slaves left to her by will to the said Mary Howle (then Mary Chiles) will bearing the date 29 April 1718 by Henry Chiles.
--The last record of Henry Chiles on the St. Pauls Parish Vestry Book of Hanover Co. was : At a Vestry held at ye lower Church ye 29 Oct. 1720. Mr. David Meriwether was admitted a Vestryman for this Parish in the room of Mr. Henry Chiles, lately deceased. pg. 18)

Copy of document in book of the Indenture 20 November 1673 between James Wadding, Susanna his wife, late the wife and executrix of Walter Chiles of James City aforesaid gentleman deceased, and John Page.....It mentions in the indenture (1649 Walter Chiles of James City aforesaid Gentleman, (father of the aforesaid Walter Chiles)....towards the end---And in or about the year of our Lord, one thousand six hundred fifty and three, the said Walter Chiles, the father dyed (leaving the said Walter Chiles late husband to the said Susanna Wadding party to these parts) his eldest son and heir at law.....the fifteenth day of November Annos Domi one thousand six hundred seventy one he the said Walter Chiles the son, made his last will and testament in writing, and Susanna his then wife (now Susanna Wadding party to these presents) sole executrix thereof....Shortly after the making of the will the said Walter Chiles the son dyed. Page 66 - Mrs. Anne Chiles Ward was reared in eastern Virginia, where life was more gracious than on the frontier, and where the stores of the tobacco merchants were easily accessible, carrying newest London goods and fashions. She was a woman of great beauty, which is a cherished tradition among her descendants today. Her family of five sons and twin daughters, Anne and Agatha, was complete before she came into the Roanoke Valley, her youngest son, Henry, being a small child at the time. But like other members of her family, Anne’s life was tragically short, and she did not live to enjoy the handsome home which her husband built for her with so much care and thought. She was buried in the garden graveyard at River View, the home plantation of her brother Paul Chiles, who had died in 1761 and where her mother was also laid to rest. Anne Chiles descends from Walter Chiles, Sr., an early Virginia settler who arrived with his own ship and held several governmental positions in the colony. This branch of the Chiles family is listed among the First Families of Virginia.

I JOHN WARD, SEN. of the County of Pittsylvania and state of Virginia, being in a low state of health but of sound mind and disposing memory, make this my last will and testament, in manner & form following. I give to JOHN SMITH, RALPH SMITH, SALLY LEFTWICH, deceased, formerly ELIZABETH SMITH, the sum of five hundred dollars to be equally divided between them - I give to the children of MILDRED JONES deceased, formerly MILDRED SMITH, three hundred dollars to be equally divided between them - I give to MATILDA, SALLY, and DOSKA CALLAWAY the sum of three hundred dollars each -

"Col. Thomas Ward and his uncle, Jeremiah Ward,Sr. were the oldest permanent settlers in present day Cabell County, West Virginia, then being Kanawha County, Virginia. They came to the area shortly after the Revolutionary War around 1795. They first lived in a cave to avoid the Indians. They were interested in land and salt. They bought many pieces of the original Savage Grant and developed salt works. At one time Thomas Ward owned practially all the land from Salt Rock to three miles below Barboursville. Thomas Ward was the oldest salt maker of Cabell County.

Robert Adams Ward
Robert Ward was born between 1770 and 1775 in British controlled Colonial Virginia. Robert Ward on 03 Dec 1804 in Shanandoah County, Virginia where he was married to Nancy Smailes.

He enlisted during the War of 1812 in Rockingham County in the First Battalion serving as a Private under Cpt. Samuel Lynn. In 1815, he failed to appear twice at Muster and was fined 75 cents each occurance. In 1816, he failed to attend Muster three times and a imposed fee was 75 cents each time. This failure to appear may have been due to seasonal planting or birth of a child.

In the 1820 census, Rockingham County there is a Benjamin Ward living next door to Robert - possibly a brother.

Sometime around 1828 Robert & Nancy moved to Greenbrier County, Va. June 11, 1828 Robert bought 3120 acres (three tracts) of land from Stephen Goodhue of New Hampshire (Bk 12 pg 78) The land was in Greenbrier County on the north side of the New River, including part of War Ridge. An old newspaper clipping says he settled along Little Beaver Creek.

According to Fayette County History by J.T. Peters & H.B. Carden pg 548 Robert Ward & Enos Gwinn were the second
settlers to settle on Bacus mountain then known as Naoma. Robert settled on the ridge in a south-westerly direstion. They built log homes & cleared land for corn.
On Feb 23, Robert & Nancy sold to Nathaniel Berry 100 acres at the end of War Ridge on New River. (Fayette Co Book B 461). On July 9, 1846 Robert (no mention of wife) sold to Wm. Gwinn for the sum of $1.00 1120 acres on the New River (Fayette Co. C 689) Since some of his children show up in Lawrence County OH on the 1850 census he may have been preparing to move to Ohio. August 25, 1858 his heirs listed as Robert Ward, G.L. Ward, Adam Miller, Winsom Davenport, Thomas Ward & William Parker sold 100 acres on the New River
to Wm. Redden, Jr. for $15.00. The deed was drawn up in Lawrence County Ohio & filed in Fayette County. Wm. Redden may have been the husband of Sarah (Salley) Ward & a son-in-law to Robert.

He died in Raleigh County, Virginia, near Ward's Ridge, approx.1858, and is buried in an unmarked grave at Tilden Community Cemetery.

This deed made this 25th day of August in the year 1858 between Thomas Ward, Robert Ward, William Parker, Adam Miller, George Ward, Winston Davenport heirs and devises of Robert Ward snr dec'd of the first part and William Redden Jr of the second part, witneseth, that the said parties of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of FIve dollars doth grant unto the part of the second part all their right title and interest in and to certain tract or parcel of land lying in the County of Fayette and state of Virginia on the waters of New River containing by estimation one hundred acres be the same more or less, and bounded as follows to wit, Beginning at an oak a corner of the said lying on the bank of New River thence running up the river to the slippery rock xxx Large Rock lying in the edge of the river on William Gwinn line thence leaving the river and with line of the mentioned to a line of the tract sold by the said Robert Ward Snr to Nathan Berry thence with his line to the old patent lines of the original survey and with said line to the beginning, and it being part of a tract of land of which said Robert Ward dec'd possed.
