Parents of Robert Bolling were John Bolling and Mary Cary who resided in Bolling Hall, Bradford, Yorkshire,England. Robert was baptised at All Hallows, Barking Essex. Emigrated to America, arrived on October 2,1660 at age 13. He married Jane Rolfe in 1675. Jane Rolfe was a descendent of Pocahantas and John Rolfe. His wife died the next year in 1676, leaving one child. Robert remarried in 1681 to Jane Anne Stith. They had 7 children. Robert, Edward, Anne, Drury, Thomas, Agnes (1700-1762), Mollie (1702) in Virginia. Descendents of Jane Anne Stith-Bollings were referred to as the "white bollings" and descendents of Jane Rolfe were known as the "red bollings". Robert died at Kippax, Virginia on June 17th, 1709.



Robert Bolling, founder of the family in Virginia, was the son of John Bolling, of "All Hallows," Backen Parish, Town St., London. This John Bolling was descended from a younger branch of the Bolling Hall. His son, Robert, b. December 26, 1646, arrived in Virginia, October 2, 1660, when not quite fifteen years old. He lived at Kippox, sometimes called Farmingdale, a large estate below Petersburg on James River. His dwelling house is now in ruins. Robert Bolling grew up, and early attained prominence in the colony and married Jane Rolfe, daughter of Lieut. Thomas Rolfe and Jane Poythress, and granddaughter of John Rolfe and Pocahontas. They had one son, Col. John Bolling, b. 1676, the same year his mother died. He settled, lived and died on his plantation called "Cobbs," on the Appomattox River, below Petersburg, hence his sobriquet "of Cobbs." Col. John Bolling engaged in commerce and soon became very wealthy. He is described as gay and social in his disposition and eminently adapted for society. Judge Windham Robertson, a descendant of the Bollings, in his "Biographical Sketches," relates the following anecdote of him: "Col. Robert Bolling, in England, at a feast given him by a kinswoman, met a Yorkshire lady, who hearing him talk, exclaimed, 'Oh, mine Got, you no hear dat man, an he talk English as well as me.' 'Aye, madam, and a good deal better, or I would not talk at all,' was the Colonel's quick and not over gallant rejoinder."

Regarding Story of Jane Bolling Clack

Jane Bolling as first or second child of Robert Bolling and Jane Rolfe would have been without a mother to care for her as an infant; Jane Rolfe Bolling died at childbirth of infant Jane or her brother. Father Robert would have been busy with duties in Virginia militia and rebellions, so both children probably were initially cared for by the local parish. When father Robert remarried, presumably he took back his son, but not daughter Jane, as her care probably was easier at the parish church. Also, sentiment in the area was strongly anti Indian. Robert Bolling needed to maintain political support; being father to an Indian child would have been unpopular. Letting baby Jane remain with the parish church to receive a "proper" Christian upbringing would have been deemed prudent. Thus Jane Bolling would have been raised in the parish church; sixteen years later the young woman raised by the church would have been a "perfect" wife for the just arrived Reverend James Clack from England, come to take over duties as the parish minister. Circumstantial, but compelling.

When Jane Rolfe Billing died, she had one child, a son; but may also have had an infant daughter as well. Robert Bolling later acknowledges a son, but no mention of a daughter is found in the records. The argument in support of the existence of a daughter includes circumstantial evidence and later testimony by descendants who would have had to have come from this Line in order to have been Pocahontas descendants.

It needs to be noted that circumstantial evidence needs to include consideration of the society and events at that time in Virginia. In the 1600's there was a large gap between European settlers, Christianity, and social norms vs. native American culture, beliefs, and practices. Col. Robert Billing held a position of authority in the Virginia colony, and the responsibilities of his position may have pushed him into making decisions that made him sacrifice his personal life and family duties to maintain his position in the community. There was conflict, Indian wars, and rebellion all at the time of the death of his wife (Jane Rolfe Bolling). There was a great deal of hatred and mistrust between the two cultures.

Pocahontas was required to convert to Christianity before her marriage to John Rolfe was allowed. Of the three generations of descendants of Chief Powhatan who lived in the new society, not the old (native American), the only one whohad lived a long life at that point, was Thomas Rolfe, who was totally isolated from native American culture since he was raised by his grandparents in England. The other two generations, his mother Pocahontas, and his daughter Jane Rolfe, lived in white society in Jamestown, but were clearly able to remain in contact with their native American roots. They both died very young.

IF in fact, Jane Rolfe Bolling left an infant son AND a daughter, the decision of who to raise these infants may have been a difficult one. If they were initially cared for by the local church, it is plausible that a decision was made that the daughter Jane should be cared for by the local church, so that she "would fit in better" as an adult, while the son would do fine with his father as a role model at home.

Given that later generations claimed to be descended from Pocahontas, and that all these individuals are descended from Rev. James Clack and his wife Jane; it is reasonable to conclude that Jane Clack was Jane Bolling Clack.

"Presumably her granddaughter, Sarah (Clack) Maclin, was reliably
informed concerning her grandparents and it is certain that she claimed
descent from the Bolling family and from the Indian chieftain, Powhatan,
and his daughter, Pocahontas. Abundant cumulative evidence in all the various branches of her descendants is to that effect. Many of her descendants, early as well as later ones, were given the names, Bolling, Powhatan, and, Pocahontas."

Rebecca was the name that the white settlers gave Pocahontas.
There were other names in their descendants Jane, Powhatan, Pocahontas, etc..

The Cobbs from County Kent, England
In 1639, Ambrose Cobbs and his family landed in Virginia, in the original Henrico County deeper inland on the James River, and settled Cobbs Hall, a 350 acre estate on the north side of the Appomattox River in York County. According to Early Virginia Immigrants 1623-1666, by George Cabel in 1912, Robert Cobbs and Margarett Cobbs, the children of Ann and Ambrose Cobbs were brought to Henrico County by Ambrose and Ann Cobbs.

Ambrose Cobbs was born in 1603 in Petham, Kent, England, where he married Ann White on 18 April 1625. Ann White was born in 1608 in Norton Parish, Kent. Before the marriage, Ann was living in Willesborough with her sister Sarah and brother-in-law Thomas Cobbs, the brother of Ambrose. Ambrose and Ann gave birth to son Robert in 1627, and then in 1633 sold their property in England in preparation for the trip to the colonies. On July 25, 1639, Ambrose patented 350 acres on the Appomattox River, near Swift's Creek, about nine miles from present Petersburg, about fifty miles upriver from Jamestown, and adjacent to properties owned by Abraham Wood and John Baugh. During his lifetime, the entire locale became known as 'Cobbs' or 'Cobbs Hall', a name that was used to identify the entire surrounding area until well after the Civil War. Robert, the son of Ambrose, became the York County Anglican Church Warden of Marston Parish two years after the death of Ambrose. He was York County’s Justice of the Peace in 1676, and High Sheriff of York County in 1682 – the year Robert died. At that time Robert’s son, Ambrose, was a member of Bruton Parish in Williamsburg, and helped build the Bruton Parish Anglican Church, which is still operating today. Robert inherited Cobbs Hall when Ambrose died in 1656, and he immediately sold the property to Michael Masters, who then sold it to John and Thomas Burton that same year. In 1704, a son of Thomas Burton sold "Cobbs" to John Bolling, and though it continued to be known as "Cobbs", the property remained in the possession of the Bolling family for over a hundred years.

John Bolling was the son of Colonel Robert Bolling and his wife Jane Rolfe, daughter of Thomas Rolfe and granddaughter of Pocahontas. The state of Virginia owns a painting of the mansion at Cobbs Hall, but was probably built by the Bolling family. During the Revolution, the property was raided by the British. The crops and outbuildings were burned, but the main house was left untouched. During the Civil War however, the entire property was overrun in 1864 and burned to the ground by Federal troops.


Major John Bolling (January 27, 1676 – April 20, 1729) was a colonist, farmer, and politician in the Virginia Colony. John Bolling was the son of Colonel Robert Bolling and Jane (née Rolfe) Bolling. His maternal grandfather was Chief Powhatan's grandson, Thomas Rolfe and maternal great grandmother was Pocahontas. John Bolling was born at Kippax Plantation, in Charles City County, a site which is now within the corporate limits of the City of Hopewell. He made his home at the Bolling family plantation "Cobbs" just west of Point of Rocks on the north shore of the Appomattox River downstream from present-day Petersburg, Virginia. (Cobbs was located in Henrico County until the area south of the James River was subdivided to form Chesterfield County in 1749.)

John Bolling married Mary Kennon (1679–1727), daughter of Richard Kennon and Elizabeth Worsham, on December 29, 1697. They had at least seven children, whose names appear in John Bolling's will:

John Bolling Jr. (1700–1757) married Elizabeth Lewis in 1720. Later married Elizabeth Bland Blair (the niece of James Blair, the first president of the College of William & Mary) on August 1, 1728 and had at least nine children, including John Bolling III, who married Mary Jefferson (the sister of United States President Thomas Jefferson.

Jane Bolling (1703–1766) married Colonel Richard Randolph in 1714 or 1720 and had seven children.
Elizabeth Bolling (b. 1709), married William Gay of Scotland and had three children.
Mary Bolling (1711–1744), married John Fleming and had eight children.
Martha Bolling (1713–1737), married Thomas Eldridge in 1729 and had four children.
Anne Bolling (1718–1800), married James Murray and had six children.
Sarah Bolling (1727–1816), married Major Robert Davis and had one child.

In 1722, he opened a tobacco warehouse in what is now the 'Pocahontas' neighborhood of Petersburg. William Byrd II of Westover Plantation is said to have remarked that Major Bolling enjoyed "all the profits of an immense trade with his countrymen, and of one still greater with the Indian.". Major Bolling served in the Virginia House of Burgesses from 1710 until his death in 1729. John and Mary Bolling's descendants are some of the descendants of Pocahontas, and include Latter-day Saint pioneer Martha Jane Crismon Lewis, First Lady of the United States Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, astronomer Percival Lowell, Virginia Governor then Senator Harry Flood Byrd, New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen, and Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd.

In Old Virginia Houses Along the James by Emmie Ferguson Farrar (New York: Bonanza Books, 1957). On pp. 61-62, Ms Farrar has this to say about Cobb's Hall:

"AMBROSE COBB patented three hundred and fifty acres on Appomattox River in 1639. The patent was granted him in order that he might bring over himself, his wife, his son and three others to Virginia and settle on the patented land. He was in business in York, and from the records, there were two other sons, Ambrose II and Thomas. (Bishop Meade mentions Ambrose Cobb, vestryman at the Church in Williamsburg, some time between 1674-1769.)

Cobb built the first mansion at Cobb's. Its site was on the north side of
Appomattox River in what is now Chesterfield County. Later John Bolling
(the great-grandson of Pocahontas and John Rolfe) and his wife, Mary Kennon, of Brick House, bought Cobb's, and it became a Bolling home for many generations. John Bolling went into mercantile business and carried on extensive trade with the Indians as well as the English.

John and Mary had a son, John, who was something of a gay blade and liked
dancing, fishing, hunting, dogs and horses. He was devoted to his family.
He became a justice in the courts, while the family acres were still a part of Henrico, and later presided over the first Court of Chesterfield County. John had a son, Thomas, who married Elizabeth Gay. She rode about the county and to church with her coach and four, with coachman, footman and postillion in bright yellow livery.

Many distinguished Americans, including the second Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, were descendants of this family.

The burial ground at Cobb's is surrounded by a high brick wall, and many
Bollings are buried here. There is a granite monument on which is
inscribed, 'Around this stone lie the remains of Colonel John Bolling of
Cobbs. Great Grandson of Rolfe and Pocahontas--Born 1676--Died 1709.'

Some members of the Bolling family were deaf, so William Bolling engaged a teacher, John Braidwood, of Washington, and in 1815 organized the first
school for the deaf in America. It continued for only four years.

Cobbs suffered damage both during the Revolutionary and the Civil Wars.

It eventually burned down but was rebuilt. After the Bollings sold the
place, there was a succession of owners and several changes of name. Now,
since Mr. M. T. Broyhill, of Hopewall, purchased the property and subdivided it into small farms, there are many people living at Cobb's."

John was noted for his sagacity in business and fine executive ability, as well as for his hospitality and love of pleasure. He lived in a style of profuse elegance, feasting and hunting and keeping fine horses and dogs.
For many years he was County Lieutenant of Chesterfield, an office of much dignity and importance, as he commanded the county militia, and presided at court.
He married (August 24, 1728) Elizabeth Blair, daughter of Col. Archibald Blair, and niece of the Commissary of the Bishop of London, Rev. Dr. James Blair, one of the founders of William and Mary College and its first President.

-In the name of God Amen, I John Bolling of the Parish of Dale in the County of Henrico Gent. being of Sound and disposing mind and memory Thanks be to Almighty God for the same do make constitute and appoint this to be my last Will and Testament in manner following I give and Devise unto my loving Wife Elizabeth Bolling during her natural life all my lands and tenaments in the Counties of Henrico and Chesterfield except the land at the Point where John Bolling Inspection Houses are, also the use of all my Negroes on my several Plantations in the said Countys Also my Plantation cal1ed by the name of Bollings Island in Goochland County against Rock Castle Low Ground Also the use of Six Negroes named Lusey, Austin, Toney, Jugg, Sue, and Betty Also the use of all my Plate during her nature Life with full power to Bequeath the said Plate by her last Will and Testament to such of my Children as She shall think fitt (sic, fit) and in Case She shall Die without such Will then I give and Bequeath so said Plate unto my Sons Living at the Time of her Death to be equally divided amongst them. Also give and bequeath unto my said Wife all my Household goods, Stocks and other Personal Estate belonging to and being upon the said Lands Tenaments and Plantations to her own proper use forever.

I Give and devise unto my Son Thomas Bolling and his heirs and afsign (sic, assign) forever all that part of my Land in the County of Goochland called Licking Hole that is above Licking Hole Creek and two acres on the Fork of the said Creek below Alexander Logans be the same more or less which said Two Acres of Land I intended to have bounded by Marked Trees in the presence of several of the Neighbours (sic, neighbors).

I give and devise unto my Son John Bolling all the rest of my Licking Hole tract of Land lying below the said Creek and including the Fork thereof (except the two Acres before given to my Son Thomas) to him and his Heirs forever. I also give and devise unto my said Son John Bolling and his Heirs and Afsign (sic, Assign) forever my Mill on Beaver Dam Creek in the County of Goochland and all the Land which I have on the said Beaver Dam Creek and the Branches thereof. Also the Reversion of all my Lands in the County of Henrico on the North Side of James River after the Death of my Wife as also of one Tract of Land on the South Side of James River called Rogsdale joyning (sic, joining)to Henry Battes and Edward Folks Land and on the said River.

I Give and Bequeath unto my Son Robert Bolling all my Land at Willis’s Creek and at Tolere or near the seven Islands and Also a small Tract of Land above Dugads between the said Dugads and one of the Seads and all my Surveys Entries and orders of Council adjoining or near the same and also all my entries on Rock Island Creek all which said Lands lye in the County of Albemarle and I do give and devise them unto my said Son Robert his Heirs and afsigns (sic, assign) forever.

It is my Will and Desire that if either of my Sons Robert Bolling or Edward Bolling should Die before the age of Twentyone years that the survivor of them and his Heirs shall have and enjoy his Part of the Lands hereby devised him. It is also my Will that the Rents and Profits of my Land called John Bollings Inspection at the Point shall be applied by my Executor towards discharging the Quitrents of my Lands 1n the Counties of Albemarle and Lunenburg untill (sic, until) my Son Edward comes to the age of Twentyone years if he Lives so long but if not then until my Son Robert shall Attain that age.

I Give and Bequeath unto my Daughter Mary Bolling so much Money as will make the Legacy given her by her Aunt Anne Whiting amount to Five Hundred Pounds to be paid her when She shall Attain the Age of Twentyone Years or be Married which shall first happen.

I do declare my Will to be that whatsoever I have given and devised to him by this my Will is upon this Condition that he my said Son Thomas do as soon as he comes to Age Release to my Executor and the Executors of the said Anne all his Right and Title to the said Legacy and the Legacys given by her to his Brothers therein mentioned now Dead or any of them and if he shall refuse so to do then I do Subject all my Estate hereby given him with the paiment (sic, payment) of so much Money as he shall be entitled to by Virtue of the Will of the said Whiting to be raised and paid to my Executor towards Discharging to Legacys hereby given to my Daughters. He was married August 11, 1728 to Elizabeth, daughter of Dr. Archibald Blair. She was the niece of James Blair D.D., who was the founder of William and Mary College. According to the Pocahontas book, they had 19 children, but from the January 1985 issue of the Pocahontas Trails newsletter we learn that there were 21 children counting one that died as an infant. According to the newsletter, the list was copied from the book [Of Whom I Came; From Whence I came] by Zelma Wells Price... We find from reading the Pocahontas book that Major John Bolling devoted much of his energy taking long and perilous journeys into the wilderness country for the purpose of claiming valuable unappropriated lands for his family. He was described as a person who took much pleasure from fine horses, hounds, hunting, fishing, fowling, feasting and dancing, yet always had time for his family. He was public spirited and well liked. John was [County Lieutenant] of Chesterfield, an office of much dignity and importance. Robert Bolling was a poet, a member of the House of Burgesses (1761–1765), the sheriff of Buckingham County, and a member of the county court (1761–1775). Trained as a lawyer, he nearly fought a duel with William Byrd (1728–1777), a judge on the General Court, when Bolling accused the judges of bias in a murder case. Bolling was also involved in a suit brought by his youngest brother over an inheritance. The younger Bolling was represented by George Wythe, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Robert Bolling by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration's author. Bolling is best known as a poet, however. He published more poetry than any other colonial American between 1759 and 1775, including the grotesque "Neanthe" (ca. 1763), which reflected elements of Italian traditions, colonial Virginia folklore, and English poetry. In addition, during the failed courtship of his distant cousin, Bolling kept a journal, "A Circumstantial Account," which provides a unique view of eighteenth-century Virginia gentry. Bolling died suddenly in 1775 while attending the Virginia Convention of July–August 1775.

Robert Bolling was born on August 17, 1738, at Varina in Henrico County, the son of John Bolling and Elizabeth Blair Bolling and a great-great-grandson of Pocahontas and John Rolfe. In 1751 his father sent him to the Free Grammar School of Queen Elizabeth in Wakefield, England, which a number of other Virginia boys attended. Bolling excelled in languages. On his way back to Virginia he stopped off in London and on December 31, 1755, was admitted to the Middle Temple for legal studies. Bolling returned to Virginia the next year, arriving at Yorktown on April 16, 1756. For a year and a half he studied law under Benjamin Waller in Williamsburg.
After his father died in 1757, Bolling lived at his father's Chesterfield County plantation, Cobbs, until the middle of 1760, when he built a house called Chellow, or Chellowe, at his plantation in the portion of southern Albemarle County that became Buckingham County in 1761. From January 12 until September 16, 1760, Bolling courted Anne Miller, a distant cousin. His courtship journal, "A Circumstantial Account," and the poems he wrote provide a unique view of courtship among the eighteenth-century Virginia gentry. The romance ended when Miller sailed to Scotland with her father; she later married Sir Peyton Skipwith.

On June 5, 1763, Bolling married Mary Burton, of Northampton County. She died on May 2, 1764, two days after the birth of their daughter. Almost fourteen months later, on May 31, 1765, Bolling posted a marriage bond in Amherst County and married Susanna Watson on that day or early in June. They had two sons and two daughters.

At the first election after Buckingham County was formed, the voters chose Bolling for the House of Burgesses. He attended the assembly of 1761–1765 regularly and was appointed to the prestigious Committee on Propositions and Grievances in 1762. Assuming that the important assembly business was concluded, he left to be married before the last session adjourned, thereby missing the famous meeting of the House of Burgesses on May 29, 1765, when Patrick Henry presented the Virginia Resolves against the Stamp Act. Bolling either did not stand for reelection in the summer of 1765 or was defeated.

Bolling became embroiled in several controversies. He heard George Whitefield preach at Bristol Parish in Blandford in April 1765 and satirized his revivalistic preaching. Later, in Alexander Purdie and John Dixon's Williamsburg Virginia Gazette for June 20, 1766, Bolling precipitated a major crisis by questioning whether three members of the General Court had shown partiality in bailing their friend John Chiswell, who had been arrested and charged with murder. Writers hotly debated the question in the newspapers. William Byrd, one of the judges who allowed Chiswell bail, sued Bolling for libel. On October 16, 1766, Lieutenant Governor Francis Fauquier, presiding at a session of the General Court, instructed a grand jury to "punish the Licentiousness of the Press," but the jury refused to indict. Byrd subsequently challenged Bolling to a duel, but a few hours before the duel was to take place both men were arrested and jailed. After being bound over to keep the peace they were released.

Bolling was again involved in legal troubles in 1771. His youngest brother, Archibald Bolling, sued him, believing that he should have received the property that their brother Edward Bolling, who died in 1770, had left instead to Robert Bolling. Archibald Bolling's attorney, George Wythe, and Robert Bolling's attorney, Thomas Jefferson, prepared exhaustive statements of the case, both of which survive. Jefferson's argument remains one of the best examples of his abilities as a lawyer.

Bolling cultivated grapes, made wine on his estate in Buckingham County, and wrote a dissertation on wine making, a portion of which appeared in Purdie and Dixon'sWilliamsburg Virginia Gazette for February 25, 1773. The House of Burgesses awarded him £50 sterling a year for five years beginning in 1773 "in Order to enable him to prosecute his scheme of cultivating Grapes, for the making of Wine."

Bolling is best known as a writer. He published more poetry than any other colonial American between 1759 and his death. His poems appeared in the Williamsburg newspapers on many occasions, such as on the arrival of Governor Botetourt in 1768, and were of several types, including a long elegy in John Dixon and William Hunter'sWilliamsburg Virginia Gazette of May 20, 1775, on the deaths of Virginia militiamen at the Battle of Point Pleasant the previous October during Dunmore's War (1773–1774). Bolling was probably the greatest student of Italian literature in colonial America, and he wrote poetry in Italian, French, and Latin as well as in English.
His verse ranged through the usual genres of eighteenth-century popular poetry but also included some extraordinary pieces, such as the amazingly grotesque poem "Neanthe" (ca. 1763), which reflected elements of Italian anti-Petrarchan traditions, colonial Virginia folklore, and English Hudibrastic poetry. In the earliest appreciation of Bolling's poetry, Pierre Étienne Du Ponceau extravagantly judged him "one of the greatest poetical geniuses that ever existed." Bolling also wrote a brief family history, which was translated from the original French and published in Richmond in 1868 asMemoir of a Portion of the Bolling Family in England and Virginia. It recorded his descent from the immigrant Robert Bolling and the granddaughter of Pocahontas.

In many other ways typical of the colonial Virginia gentry, Bolling served on the Buckingham County Court from its creation in 1761 until his death and by 1774 was the second-ranking member. Against his wishes he was appointed sheriff of Buckingham County in 1765, and he was a colonel of the Buckingham County militia by 1773. Bolling was elected to represent his county in the Virginia Convention of July–August 1775. He was present in Richmond on July 17, 1775, for the convention's opening. Four days later, on July 21, 1775, Robert Bolling died suddenly at Richmond, perhaps of a heart attack. "Poor Bob. Bolling has run his race," one of the delegates wrote, "adieu to Burgundy."

Robert Bolling (1738-1775), grandson of Robert Bolling (1646-1709) was born in Virginia and sent to England for his education. On his return to Virginia, he studied law, but soon took over at Chellow, a tobacco plantation inherited from his father. He was one of the most prolific poets in Virginia's early history. Much of Bolling's work remains unpublished. His papers are owned by the University of Virginia Library and the Henry E. Huntington Library.

Anne ended the romance, and Bolling was twice married: first, in 1763, to Mary Burton, who died after giving birth, and second, in 1765 to Susanna Watson, who gave him several children. Bolling died suddenly in Richmond on July 21, 1775 while attending the Virginia Convention of July–August 1775.

Henry Gay was a first cousin of Rev. Jesse Bolling, who at that time was one of the most prominent Baptist preachers in Eastern Kentucky.

Henry Gay B. 1750 d. 1830 served as a Revolutionary War Soldier. At the Battle of Yorktown, October 29, 1781, he was a bodyguard to General George Washington. he came from Greene County, Virginia to Cutshin, leaving eight children from a former marriage. In 1796 he married Margaret Russell. In "Rugged Trail to Appalachia" by Mary Brewer it is written that Margaret Russell was a concert pianist from Tennessee. Mrs. Brewer, also, states, "In 1797 W Henery built a sturdy log home at what was first known as Corner Shoal, so called because the creek which emptied into the river there, made a kind of corner at the shoals. It later came to be known as Shoal, where the Buckhorn Lodge is located today".

In the "John Jay Dickey Diary" page 2211, T.M. Gay was interviewed at Hyde n, Kentucky. March 29, 1898. he stated: "I'm the son of Nelson Gay, a son of Henry Gay. He is 82. He was born in Perry County. His father, mentioned above, Henry Gay was, in turn, a son of a Henry Gay. He came from Ireland, he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War; he enlisted soon after he came over.

In 1613 Derry, a city in Northern Ireland, was selected by the British f or Colonization, and was renamed Londonderry. The citizens of Derry we re not in favor of the move, and from 1641 to 1689 there followed one upr ising after another. DR. WILLIAM GAY, who had been involved in the uprisi ngs in 1670, left England about this time and came to America. He settl ed in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he is said to have married the grandda ughter of Pocahontas and John Rolfe. He set up an apothecary shop in Henr ico County, Virginia, where a son, HENRY, was born. Henery's son, W. HEN RY (1750-1830), was a bodyguard to GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON at the Batt le of Yorktown on October 29, 1781.

W. HENRY lived at Greenbriar, Virginia, where he raised a family of ten sons. In 1796, after he lost his first wife, he met and married MARGARET RUSSELL, a concert pianist from Tennessee. Accompanied by three men named Carnage, Wright and Sweeden, W. HENERY and MARGARET left Virginia for Kentucky.

Crossing the southern boundary of what is West Virginia today, they entered Kentucky, came into the Big Leatherwood area, down Cutshin to Asa's Branch into Wilder and on to Grassy Branch. These creeks and branches, all in Leslie county were unnamed at that time, and were later identified by names given to them by W. HENRY GAY.

After W. HENRY reached Grassy Branch he went up another small stream, which he called Rush Creek, and found an old Indian trail that led to a large overhanging cliff. There under that cliff W. HENRY and Margaret lived their first year in Kentucky and it was where, in the winter of 1796, their first son, HENRY III (known as CLIFF HENRY), was born.

In 1797 W. HENRY built a sturdy log home at what was first known as Corner Shoal, so called because the creek which emptied into the river there, made a kind of corner at the shoals. It later came to be known as Shoal, where the Buckhorn Lodge is located today. Around 1800 this home was sold to MR. CARNAGE, who in turn sold it to WILLIAM BOWLING, known as BLUE HEAD BILLY BOWLING.

One day, while MR. CARNAGE lived there, he came home from hunting and found that one of his small children had been killed by a bear. He buried the child on the farm and stuck a maple switch in the grave. The switch took root and grew into a large tree which later became hollow. ALLEN GAY, age 85 in 1977, said he had looked into the hollow tree and seen the ch ild's grave.

Both MR CARNAGE and his wife are buried near the Buckhorn Lodge. Their graves were supposed to have been moved when the BuckhornDam was uilt, but those who know the location of the graves refused to tell where they were, and the graves are still there.

MR. SWEEDEN was killed in 1789 when cutting a bee tree. MR WRIGHT moved on to some other locality.

W. HENRY, whose name appears as HENRY GUYE on the tax records, was the first of the GAY family to pay taxes in Perry County in 1821 or 1822. CALE GAY, a Great Great Grandson, said he saw the record.

While the family lived at GAY'S CREEK, W. HENRY had to be away from home a lot hunting, trading or other business, and MARGARET kept the home and garden. One night, a bear destroyed the garden and MARGARET devised a plan to kill it. She filled several containers with brandy, and placed them in the garden hoping the bear would return. That night it did return, and next morning MARGARET went out to find it thoroughly drunk, lying on its back, peacefully flapping its paws in the air. The grandchildren said, "That was the easiest shot Grandma ever had!"

W. HENRY and MARGARET had eleven children, all boys. One of their sons, EDWARD J., became a Congressman, and EDWARD J'S grandson was a Senator from Louisiana in 1918.

Sons JOHN and JIM went to Fayette Counth. JIM'S son, JOHN L. GAY, became a banker and was Mayor of Berea, Kentucky, for the longest term served by any Mayor in America. ALLEN called him a versatile and energetic man, having suffered a broken arm at the age of 94 while building a garage.

NELSON GAY, who was W. HENRY'S twenty-first son and youngest of his and MARGARET'S sons, was married three times, first to HANNAH BARGER, daughter of ABRAHAM BARGER. Their children, all sons too, were: THOMAS GAY, father of LIGE (ELIJAH), Born 1895, and CALE GAY, born 1910,: BILL GAY, father of ALLEN GAY, born 1892,: JOHN GAY; ABRAHAM GAY; LIGE GAY; HENRY GAY; and JESS GAY.

NELSON'S second wife was CHARITY BOWLING. They had three children. His third wife was Polly Huff, no children.

ALLEN worked at that job for many years while his wife, MARY BELL, taught school in Leslie County.

ALLEN'S son, GREELEY, and wife, GLADYS, also lived in Leslie County for many years. GLADYS worked at Frontier Nursing Service until 1948. Today ALLEN and GREELEY live in Indiana. CALE lives in Perry County and LIGE is the only one left in Leslie County. LIGE is an active member of Senior Citizens Club, having served as President of the club for the past year. Before retirement he taught 40 years in the Leslie County School System. He is probably one of few old timers left who still dig ginseng. Although it is $64. a pound, he digs it mostly for the exercise and enjoyment he gets from tramping the woods. He says he digs it only in the fall, when the berries are ripe on the plants, so he can replant them.

EVERY YEAR THE GAY FAMILIES HAVE A REUNION WITH DEDICATION CEREMONIES TO " OLD RED" HENRY AND HIS EXPLOITS. ON JUNE 27, 1976, THE REUNION WAS HE LD AT LEVI JACKSON STATE PARK, WHERE THE FOLLOWING DEDICATION WAS READ: " HENRY GAY, UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON AND HIS MINUT EMEN HELPED BUILD AND MAINTAIN THIS LAND OF THE FREE, INSURING PEACE AND T RANQUILITY WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.

The first known Salt Works in Clay County, Kentucky were called Langford 's Lick, and were later known as Lower Goose Creek Salt Works.

Soon after the close of the Revolutionary War Henry Gay, Sr., of Augusta C ounty, Virginia, married as his second wife, Margaret Russell of Hawkins C ounty, Tennessee. She was closely related to the Grant family of which Ge neral U. S. Grant was a member. Henry Gay and his wife moved to Perry Cou nty, Kentucky, where he died in 1830. She survived him many years, bei ng 96 at her death.

"Bolling Hall" is located on the James River, about 35 miles west of Richmond. The land was claimed by John Bolling in 1714 and was inherited by grandson, William Bolling. William Bolling built the original Bolling Hall in the late 18th century and the house remained in the Bolling family from 1714 to 1872. Bolling Hall was the original site for one of the first schools in the United States to educate deaf children. Congenital deafness ran in the Bolling family. William Bolling had three siblings who were born deaf. Since there were not any schools for the deaf in the United States at the time, William’s deaf siblings were sent to Scotland to learn under acclaimed teacher, Thomas Braidwood. In 1760, Thomas Braidwood opened 'Braidwoods Academy' in Edinburgh, the first school for the deaf in Britain, which later relocated to Hackney, England. He made early use of a form of sign language, which continues to be used today. William Bolling married Mary Randolph and they had 4 children. One of their children, William Albert Bolling, was born deaf. William hired John Braidwood, grandson of Thomas Braidwood, to come to Bolling Hall and teach all his children. Thus, Bolling Hall became the first place in Virginia where children with congenital deafness were taught. Later, William opened a larger school for the deaf at Cobbs, another Bolling family plantation, which was large enough to accommodate deaf children from other families. The Cobbs school operated from 1812 until 1816. Bolling Hall fell into disrepair in the 1940's but has undergone a rejuvenation in recent years. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, noted for its significance in architecture, education and social history.

Reverend Anthony Walke (1755 - 1814) was the son of Colonel Anthony Walke II. He married Anne McColley McClenahan on January 15, 1776 and had six children: Anne M., Edwin, Jane Eliza, David Meade, Susan, and Anthony IV (1778 - 1820). On July 13, 1805, five months after Anne died, he married Anne Newton Fisher (1774 - 1840). They had three children: John Newton, Thomas, and Lemuel. They are all buried in the old burial ground in what is now Fairfield's subdivision, in unmarked graves.

Reverend Walke was 20 years old in the early winter of 1775 when he most likely witnessed troop movements and battles between Continental Army troops and Virginia Governor Lord Dunmore’s Loyalist troops (people who supported King George III) in battles at Kemp's Landing, 2.5 miles north and then at Great Bridge, 9 miles south of his Fairfield Manor House. The Revolutionary War (1775–1783) caught Reverend Walke at a time when he was coming of age into a Virginia gentry threatened by the loss of political power, wealth, and social prestige made possible by English control over the Virginia Colony. In his writings he blamed the north and their foolish Boston Tea Party actions.

Reverend Walke was a representative to the Virginia Constitutional Convention, and after the Revolutionary War, in early 1788 he was ordained a priest of the Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, and then served the following year as an elector from the State of Virginia to the first presidential election held in Philadelphia. Returning to Princess Anne County, Reverend Walke, with a large inheritance from his father, presided as rector over Lynnhaven Parish Church for many years without a salary (from 1788 to 1800 and again from 1812 to 1813).

Reverend Walke divided his time between preaching and the hunt. Not only was he noted for delivering sermons with a captivating mild mannered voice, but a more picturesque side of him was his love of fox and deer hunting. He conducted sermons with his horse Silverheels tethered near the door of the church. When he heard those hunting horns, he would immediately turn the service over to his clerk, Dick Edwards, and hurry off on Silverheels, not seen again until late in the day.

LOCATED, on rt. 703( THE IRISH ROAD), west, off rt.29, at Tightsqueeze va, go past Chatham High School about 2 miles. About 1/4 mile past the Concord Methodist Church on left. cemetery is about 200' off road beside old 2 story house. This house is next door to the home of Mr Edward and Clara Shelton, 681 Irish Rd, the current land owners. This land was once owned by Benjamin Riddle and Nancy Giles Riddle (my gggg-grandparents). I feel very certain that my ggg-grandparents are buried here or directly across the road. My ggg-grandfather was , Jesse McNeely, b abt 1800, d 1837. His wife was Francis (Fannie) Riddle McNeely (daughter of Benjamin and Nancy Riddle), b abt 1794, d Jan 1823 (at child-birth). I believe that Benjamin and Nancy Riddle and their son Rueben Riddle are buried here too. They all were living here at the time of their deaths. The farm was sold to a Mr Anthony after Rueben died. Anthony was a minister at the OLD BANNISTER RIVER BAPTIST CH, which was about was about 1/2 mile farther down the road, just past the river, on north side of road.

Will of David Echols, 1853

I, David Echols of the County of Pittsylvania, State of Virginia, being of sound mind & disposing memory & calling to mind the uncertainty of human life do by these presents, on the 31st day of May, 1853, make this my Last Will &
Testament hereby revoking all wills by me heretofore made.

1st I desire and direct my Executor hereinafter named immediately after my decease to pay all my just debts.

2nd I devise to my wife Nancy Echols one negro woman Jane and her increase if any. One negro boy Bob. One negro woman Eady. One horse all my stock of cattle, hogs, sheep, house hold & kitchen furniture, plantation utensils. Stock of provisions of every description, including whatever may be due to me from William A. Anthony for rent. Also three hundred dollars in cash to her and her heirs forever.

3rd I devise to my daughter, Sarah Anthony, the wife of William A. Anthony the sum of Four hundred and sixty one dollars and eighty five cents to be paid to her out of the money due to me at my death from William A. Anthony on account of a tract of land sold him to the said Sarah Anthony and her heirs forever.

4th I devise to my daughter Susan S. Scates the wife of Grief D. Scates the sum of nine hundred and seventeen dollars and seven cents to be paid to her out of the money due to me at my death from William A. Anthony on account of a tract of land sold him to the said Susan S. Scates and her heirs forever.

I devise to Coalman P. Bennett in trust for my daughter Levina Heurt the wife of Robert S. Heurt one negro girl Phillis and her increase if any during the life of my said daughter Levina and at her death I devise the girl to Susan Heurt. Daughter of Robert S. & Levina Heurt the negro girl Phillis and her increase to the said Susan Heurt and her heirs forever.

7th I devise to my grand son William J. Echols the sum of one thousand dollars, to be paid to him by my Executor hereinafter named upon his arriving at the age of twenty one years together with the interest that may accrue on the same from the time of my death. Also one negro boy Jack to be delivered to him by my executor hereinafter named upon my said grand son arriving at the age of twenty one years together with whatever his the said the said boys hires may be from the time of my death - in the event my said grand son William J. Echols should die before he arrives at the age of twenty one years or the legacy aforesaid is paid over & delivered to him then I devise the legacy contained in this seventh clause shall be equally divided between Coalman Echols, Moses Echols, Obadiah Echols, Sarah Anthony, Susan S. Scates, Coalman D. Bennett trustee for Levina Heurt the interest of the said Levina Heurt to be paid to her annually in the event any right or interest should accrue to her under this seventh clause and at her death to be paid to the heirs of her body.

8th I devise to my cousin Moses Hubbard of Franklin County thirty dollars a year to be paid to him annually during his life by my Executor hereinafter named - five hundred dollars to be retained by my Executor in his hands during the life of Moses Hubbard - the annual interest to be applied to the legacy aforesaid.

9th I devise to Coalman Echols, Moses Echols, Obadiah Echols, Sarah Anthony, Susan S. Scates, Coalman D. Bennett, trustee for Levina Heurt an equal amount of the balance of the money that may be due me at my death - including the five hundred dollars imbraced in the 8th clause of this my will after the decease of Moses Hubbard aforesaid - The annual interest held by Coalman D. Bennett in trust for Levina Heurt to be paid to her annually during her life and at her death that portion to be equally divided between the heirs of her body.

Lastly, I appoint Coalman D. Bennett Executor of this my will in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand on the day and year aforesaid.

I have that Dinah Tribble was the daughter of James Tribble and ? (perhaps a Collins*). Her father married (2) Nancy (Spurbanks?) on Apr 17, 1802 in Halifax Co, VA. Dinah's siblings were:
1. Tabitha Tribble - married (1) Thomas Word; (2) Richard Horn (I have more information of this branch)
2. Isaac Tribble
3. Ann Tribble
4. Mary "Polly" Tribble - married Glennis Blankenship
* I have an old letter from a distant relative that indicates that Tabitha had said her Mother was a "Collins".
I haven't been able to find out if this is correct or not.

Hugh Malone discovered Wilson Co., TN Chancery Bk 1, pp 281-287, Owen vs. Tribble. This suit identifies the sisters and brother of Dinah Tribble (m. David Echols) as: Tabitha (m. Richard Horn), Sarah (m. Henry Street), Ann, Mary (m. Glennis Blankenship), and Isaiah. Also identified were half-sisters Fanny (m. John T. Davis) and Lucy.
Dinah and her sisters and brother were children of James Tribble and his first wife, name unknown. The half-sisters were the children of James Tribble and Nancy Spurbanks. Tabitha did marry first, Thomas Ward.

Five slaves left to heirs:

...to my wife Nancy Echols one negro woman Jane and her increase if any. One negro boy Bob. One negro woman Eady.

William Albert Bolling was born to Colonel William Bolling.

As a deaf child, he got private tutoring with John Braidwood, grandson of Thomas Braidwood who founded the Braidwood Academy. Private tutoring was at the Bolling Hall, his private home with his deaf sibling, Mary. The private tutoring lasted from 1812 to 1814.

Later, he and Mary enrolled at the public school for the deaf, Cobb School, on the Cobb Plantation, Goochland County, Virginia in 1815 and closed in 1816. He then enrolled again at Manchester School in Manchester, Virginia June 1817 to May 1819 (Braidwood left to become a barkeeper at a tavern nearby, while John Kirkpatrick remained as the instructor. William was then transferred to a new school, Cumberland School at Farmville, Cumberland County, Virginia from 1819 to circa 1821 under the instruction of Reverend John Kirkpatrick, who was ordained as a Reverend at the Cumberland County Courthouse May 1819.
