Edna Risdon Neary, an early Risdon family genealogist, in her notes quotes "old family records" that state;

Josiah Risdon was the son of Elisha Risdon, who moved from Stratford, Connecticut some years prior to the Revolutionary War where he conducted a school for boys who were preparing to enter England's Colleges and Universities. Elisha's son, Josiah, assisted him as a teacher in this school.

Further research has NOT found evidence to prove, or disprove that Josiah was a son of Elisha, nor have records been uncovered for a school where Elisha or Josiah taught.

Onesimus Risdon (Risden) was born February 18, 1760 in Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut.

At Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont in the spring of 1777, Onesimus volunteered for 3 months in Captain Samuel Robinson's Company of Militia. Robinson's Company marched to Manchester, Bennington County, Vermont and did duty there and on that frontier. While in Manchester on July 21, 1777, Onesimus enlisted as a Private in Captain John Warner's Company of Green Mountain Rangers, and served until December 3, 1777, when he was mustered out.

In March 1778, Onesimus enlisted in Captain Isaac Clark's Company of Colonel Samuel Herrick's Regiment of Rangers then being raised and rendezvoused at “Meshowby” (now Brandon) Rutland County, Vermont for Major General De la Fayette's secret incursion into Canada. When that mission was aborted, the Company remained in service for about 2 months defending the frontiers and scouting on the shores of Otter Creek and Lake Champlain.

In the fall of 1778, Onesimus enlisted in a Company of Militia raised from the various Companies in Colonel Samuel Herrick's 2nd Vermont Militia Regiment. Captain Joseph Briggs of Pownal, Bennington County, Vermont commanded the Company. They served at Pittsford, Rutland County, Vermont scouting the frontier the whole term. Onesimus' service commenced on the 1st day of October and ended on the November 24th when he was sent home.

On August 15, 1779, Onesimus enlisted at Bennington and served as a Sergeant in Captain Thomas Sawyer's Company then garrisoned at Rutland, Rutland County, Vermont. He was honorably discharged from this service on October 15, 1779.

During the remainder of the War, Onesimus was often called out on alarms, and continued to serve when called. In mid-October 1780, he served for 7 days in Captain John Stark's Pawlet Company in Colonel Ira Allen's 6th Regiment of Vermont Militia when called out in defence of Vermont's Northern Frontier. Later in the same month or November 1780, he served 5 days in Captain Nathaniel Smith's Company of the same Regiment.

At the close of the war, Onesimus resided in Rupert, Bennington County, Vermont. He married his wife Sarah on May 11, 1780. Onesimus and Sarah had at least one child: Hannah (Risden) Reed born September 16, 1797.

Onesimus moved to Pittstown (now Richmond), Ontario County, New York before the year 1800. He resided in Richmond until he died on March 1, 1848. He is buried in the Union Cemetery, Livonia, Livingston County, New York.

Daniel was born 11 Oct 1763 at Stratford, CT and accompanied his father and brothers to Vermont. Like them he served in the Revolution at the early age of sixteen. The records at the Office of the Adjutant General, Montpelier, VT, indicate that he served as a volunteer from Rupert, VT in Aug 1779 in Capt. Thomas Sawyer's Company of Militia raised for the defense of the Northern Frontiers of America. And again in Nathaniel Smith's Company in Col. Ira Allen's Regiment of Militia for service in Oct 1781 according to the Vermont Revolutionary Rolls.

Daniel married 5 Jan 1798 at Pawlet, VT, Susannah Southwell and settled there raising one son, Alvah C. Risdon, and four daughters.

Elisha Risdon, a soldier of the War of 1812, was one of the early settlers to Hopkinton, New York and for many years kept a diary which forms a graphic picture of the life and customs of the that time. Elisha came to Hopkinton town in 1804 and for more than forty years was a conspicuous figure in its affairs.

Harriett Risdon was born Sept 21, 1821 in LeRoy, NY and died 1903 at Saline. She had married Silas Mead in 1840. Silas was born March 17, 1812 in Greenwich, CT and was a nephew of Silas Finch, who operated a general store in Orange Risdon’s parlor. Silas Mead clerked for his uncle at one time. Both Harriett and Silas are buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Saline. (Clark)

Silas and Harriett had a farm in Pittsfield Twp., where they lived for the first eleven years of their marriage.

They then removed to New Orleans, LA, where Silas operated a shoe store. During the Civil War, he made oil-cloths for soldiers’ sacks; after the Union Soldiers took the city, he worked in the New Orleans Commissary Dept. for 4 years.

Then, he came back to Washtenaw and farmed until his death. A letter that he sent to his sister Abigail in CT is archived at the Bentley Library in Ann Arbor. This letter has been transcribed and appears in Vol. 10 of Capers, the journal of the Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County.

Harriett and Silas had four children. One son, Lewis Risdon Mead, figured highly in the family businesses that thrived in California. Their son, William, lived in the Risdon homestead until 1921, after which the house became the property of Blanche Mead, William's daughter.

Later, the home was sold to a Saline nephew, Capt. William D. Mead, who moved the house to W. Henry Street, where it is still in use today as apartments. Blanche was present when the Historical Society of Washtenaw County dedicated her great grandfather’s home site in 1954. A memorial sign was erected at the time, but has since deteriorated.

During his lifetime, Orange Risdon, Sr. allowed people to be buried on his farm. Thus, the burial grounds were started and later continued when William D. Mead sold 50 acres to the Village of Saline to enlarge the cemetery.
