Notes:

John Moon was born about 1755, probably in Albemarle County, Virginia, American Colony, along the Hardware River -- in the part that by 1810 became part of Fluvanna County. His father, William, had land on the Hardware, adjacent to land owned by his brother, Jacob, though Jacob sold his tract and moved to Bedford County, Virginia. He is named in his father William Moon's will, among William Moon, the father, and children Pleasant, William, Archer, John, Martha, Judah, Elizabeth, Salley, Mildred and Roxey.

John Moon married Martha Sampson December 19, 1782, most likely in Cumberland County, Virginia, but no record has been found outside of family history. William Pleasant Moon is found on numerous Legislative petitions, along with his father-in-law, William Sampson. He is listed in the will of Martha's father, William Sampson, which was written in 1792 and not probated until 1803, in Halifax County, Virginia. In that will, he left to "my daughter Martha Moon, all the monies due me by her husband John Moon." Some have transcribed this will as John Moor and Martha Moor, but compared to other writings by the same Clerk of Court of Halifax County, Virginia, what people often transcribe as "Moor" is "Moon."

Cumberland County, Virginia, contains legislative petitions from Cumberland County, beginning in 1776. William Sampson, John Moon, William Moon, Thomas Moon, Daniel North, Thomas North, William McKinney, Gilbert North, Isham Carter, Stephen Moon and many more signed petitions. Some of these men ended up as husbands of daughters of Archibald, John, William C. and Stephen Moon, in Charlotte County, and later moving to Halifax County.

A Cumberland County deeds book lists William and John Moon having bought land from Moses Arnold in 1776. That land was sold to John Ford, in 1780.

John Moon is found in 1784 purchasing land with William C Moon, with part of the agreement being, "This indenture, made this 28th day of October in the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty four, between William Samson of the county of Charlotte, party of one part, and William Moon and John Moon, both of the county aforesaid, parties of the other part, hath granted, bargained and sold property including land with all woods, underwood ways, swamps, low grounds, mines, minerals and all other advantages whatsoever with the Estate, right, title and interest, to have and to hold the said parcel of land to the said William Moon and John Moon. Signed sealed and delivered at a Court held in Charlotte County the 7th day of March 1785."

William Sampson moved to Halifax in 1792, as there is a deed from William Sampson to Stephen and John Moon.

In 1810, in Charlotte County, Virginia., "A return of the sale of John Moon dec'd made the 17th day of December 1825." Pleasant Moon, Jane Moon, Stephen Moon, Isham Moon and Archbald Moon are listed individually as having received household furnishings, cattle, farm equipment and land. Part of the record is "At a Court help for Charlotte County the 1st day of May 1826 ... This account of sales of the Estate of John Moon, deed made the 17th date of December 1825 was this day returned into court and ordered to be recorded. Teste. Winslow Robinson." The record of sales from December 17, 1825, showed:

"Pleasant Moon, 1 bed and furniture, $12; one jug and two buckets, $12.50, one table, too dishes and some knives and forks, $1.25;.24 pounds of feathers, $7.20; one jug, $1.00; and one oven, $1.65."

"Jane Moon, one small cupboard .55; one pair of flat irons, $1.35; one bread tray and sifter, .65."

"Thomas R. Marshall, one cow and calf $12.00 [he had married Nancy Moon, a daughter of John Moon, on October 3, 1811, in Charlotte County, Virginia].

"Stephen Moon, one press, $5.00; one jug, .50 cents; one harrow, .50 cents [Stephen was a son of John Moon; Stephen had married Mary Sowell December 4, 1816, in Charlotte County, Virginia].

MOON, Stephen MOON, and Isham S. MOON at a Court held for Charlotte Co the third day of September 1810 and ordered to be recorded". John Moon was present in Charlotte County Census' in 1810 and 1820, but absent in 1830. He had died in 1825, with his estate ordered to be appraised, which was done Dec 1825 and recorded at Charlotte County Courthouse in Jan 1826. All of his living children appear at the sale or his daughter's husbands attended. Before Dec 1825 John has died[Will Book 6 page 40]

1820 Census Charlotte Co VA show John Moon with 1 M 45 and 1 M over 45, and 1 female 45 and 1 female over 45. Most likely the female 45 is Jane, who was not married at the time of her father's estate sale. He lives adjacent to Pleasant Moon, son. [9]

Charlotte County Virginia Register of Death's list John Moon as the father of Stephen Moon who died 23 Apr 1856 at the age of 69, information given by his son, Nathan Moon. [10] On the same day, Nathan also reported the death of his mother, Mary Sowell Moon, and of his mother who died on Nov 12 1856 age 60, and of his sister, Mary Hamlett, wife of John A. Hamlett, age 35, who died of measles on Nov 9 1856.

NOTE: Beware there is another John Moon in Charlotte Co VA in the 1820 census. In 1803 was surety for William Johnson to Nancy Brewer, widow "Know all men by these presents that we William Johnson and John Moon are held firmly bound unto John Page esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of one hundred & fifty dollars to which payment will hereby to be made to the said Page & his successor for the use of the Commonwealth we bind ourselves our heirs & firmly by these presents sealed with our seals & dated this 15th day of October 1803 The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage intended to be solemnized between William Johnson and Nancy Brewer (widow) Therefore, Nancy Brewer, widow, did not marry John Moon, he was the surety for the marriage but she married William Johnson (my 6th great grandfather) in 1803 as his second wife. (I have a copy of the marriage bond, but I lost the lost citation)

Notes:

The Staunton River is the boundary line between Campbell and Pittsylvania Counties. The road at left is the old stage road from Danville to Lynchburg, Virginia. William Pleasant Moon (1800-1879)and his daughter's husband Daniel Barber settled here before the Civil War. Daniel died as a Confederate soldier. John Ellis Jones married Daniel's daughter after the War and moved in with his widow.

In 1857 Daniel Barber and his father-in-law William Pleasant Moon, bought adjoining farms, which totaled just over 200 acres. The land was on Beechtree Creek, near Staunton River and the Hill Grove Post Office. The Pleasant Moon log cabin, which is still standing, is east of the old stage road from Danville to Lynchburg, which crossed the Staunton River at Ward's Bridge.

The large family graveyard is across the spring branch east of the Moon cabin. Daniel and Mary buried many children here. One-year-old Jenny L. Barber died in 1859. George W. Barber, age three, died in 1860. Diphtheria swept though the house in September 1862. During that one month, four children died. Nancy was two; Susan, four; Thomas, six; and Mary, eight years old. My grandmother Martha would have been 12 or 13. Daniel had enlisted in the Confederate army on March 10, 1862, and was not at home to bury his little ones. He died on April 3, 1863, at Guinea Station, of smallpox. His son-in-law, John Ellis Jones, was buried here in 1889.

1870 census: Daniel Barber died of smallpox, as a solder, in 1863, at Guinea Station, near Fredericksburg, during the Civil War. His widow, Elizabeth Barber, had four children at home and her son-in-law John Ellis Jones. Here, John appears to be a child because the census taker failed to list him and Martha's last name. John and Martha were married earlier that year on February 17, 1870.

In 1908, Dan and Annie Jones bought four lots at the corner of Washington and Valley (later Aspen) Streets, in Pittsylvania County. These lots were a hundred yards from the city limits, which crossed Washington Street at Sixth Street. The city annexed this area in 1931.

Lottie was a lecturer and under the nom-de-plume "Charles M. Clay," wrote several books. During the Civil War she gave "splendid service" as a Southern spy, and with her sister, Virginia, disguised herself as an Irish washerwoman and often penetrated the Federal lines. She was caught and held, but never put on trial, and the charges were dropped. Later she went to England as a correspondent for one of the New York dailies, while abroad she was presented to the French Court during the time of Louis Napoleon.

This Lotie Moon is actually Cynthia Charlotte Moon, daughter of Robert Moon & Cynthia Ann Sullivan.

"We must focus attention on Charlotte "Lottie" Moon. Charlotte, nicknamed Lottie, was one of three sisters and two brothers in the Moon family. They lived adjacent to the Miami campus, initially in the home that was occupied until last year by the Beta Theta Pi headquarters. Then they moved several doors down east on High Street to what is still called the Lottie Moon house, on the corner of University and High, across the street from the guest cottage of this university.

Let's simply say Lottie Moon, her sisters, and her two brothers, with Virginia and Tennessee in their backgrounds, along with their parents remained loyal to the South when the split came in 1861 between North and South and the Civil War erupted. Both Moon boys would serve in the Confederate armed forces, one in the navy, one in the army. One of Lottie Moon's sisters, like Lottie, would serve as an espionage agent, but only Lottie would really reach top stature as the skilled Mata Hari of her generation.

For me there are two favorite memories of Lottie during the war. The first came in October, 1862, when Lottie attended a meeting of espionage agents in Toronto, Canada for gathering of information. Lottie then returned to the States. Meaning to get to the Confederacy, she presented herself in Washington, D.C., at the Office of the Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton.

She told the Secretary that she was an English noble-woman, that her name was the Lady Hull, who had come all the way from Britain to take baths in the warm waters of Virginia, only to find there was a war on. How could she possibly get to the other side of the front lines to get into those warm waters to treat her ailing joints, to get relief from the rheumatism and the arthritis which so badly crippled her? The Secretary, totally persuaded that Lottie was what she presented herself to be, felt compassion. He told Lottie that it just so happened that President Lincoln himself was going the next day to inspect the troops in the front lines, just to the east of Richmond. She could ride in the President's personal carriage with Abraham Lincoln, down to the lines. He would even give her a note to assure safe passage through the lines and on to the warm springs of Virginia for treatment.

The next day, there was Oxford's Lottie Moon seated next to the President of the United States, riding in the latter's personal carriage, and across from her the Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton. As the carriage rumbled on through the hills of northern Virginia, Lady Hull, exhausted from her long trip over to this new world, fell asleep, or so it seemed. As she dozed on, with audible sounds of slumber periodically escaping from her lips, the President and the Secretary of War began to become less and less discreet in their comments about what needed to be done in the war in the next few weeks. Before long they were divulging the most confidential information, and there

was Lottie Moon absorbing it all as she feigned slumber. They arrived at the front lines, and Lottie, with the note, passed on through to see Jefferson Davis himself. She delivered to the South the important information, which for months thereafter cost the North dearly in terms of actions that were anticipated by Confederate troops even before they occurred, resulting in defeat after defeat for Northern troops. It was because of this that Stanton and Lincoln finally agreed that they'd been duped--that Lady Hull had been in fact a Confederate agent, and they came to know that she was Lottie Moon. The scene shifts. I'll not go into detail. I'll simply say that when

Lottie Moon was growing up she had a score or more of suitors in this small place. She really wanted to marry James Clark, a fellow Virginian and Miami graduate who had gone into a career in law and [who] was somewhat older than the rest. She finally agreed to marry a younger man closer to her age, Lieutenant Ambrose Burnside of Liberty, Indiana. Lieutenant Burnside and Lottie set the date for the wedding, June 21, 1848. This was some years before the war. On that day, before a full assemblage in the church, when the minister asked Ambrose if he would take Lottie to be his wife, he nodded and said he would. [The minister] turned to Charlotte, Lottie, and asked if she would take Ambrose to be her husband. She looked at the tall young lieutenant beside her, shook her head defiantly side to side, and said "No, Sir-eee Bob, I won't!" There at the alter she had changed her mind. She really wanted James Clark, not Ambrose Burnside.

The scene shifts to April, 1863. In those fifteen years Lottie had married James Clark, and now she was Lottie Moon Clark, engaged in espionage against the North. In April, 1863 she made her way to Cincinnati hoping to cross the river into Kentucky, disguised now as an Irish scrubwoman. She was bound, she said, for Lexington, to visit her boy who had been injured in combat and needed a mother's love. A young private, standing his first watch, said he did not have authority to let her through. She asked who did, and he said, "The general." Said Lottie, "Take me to the general." The private did. They went up the stairs to an office on the second floor. They knocked on the door, and a voice called out, "Come in." In they walked to behold, seated behind the desk in general's stars, Ambrose E. Burnside. He was now in command of the defense of southern Ohio, southeastern Indiana, and northern

Kentucky. She could be Lady Hull, using words in the best English, and no interruption. But now, as an Irish scrubwoman, the Irish dialect left her as she tried to tell the general why she needed a pass to see her wounded son in the hospital in Lexington. After several false starts General Burnside recognized who he was confronting. He said, "Lottie, I know who you are." Despite her protestations he insisted he knew who she was, and finally she agreed. Yes, she was Lottie. The general could have had her shot or hung, but there was still a spark. He agreed instead to place her under house arrest at

the Burnet house in Cincinnati if she would forgo any further espionage

service for the South in the remainder of the war. She agreed, and she lived out the war in Cincinnati under house arrest. We still have, across the street from this campus, the Lottie Moon House, attesting that one of the South's three foremost spies of the Civil War called Oxford home.

MOORE, Henry Henry Rogers Moore, 92, of Birmingham, passed away on June 4, 2008. A native of Virginia, he was a long-time resident of Atlanta, Georgia until recently moving to Birmingham. Mr. Moore was the son of the late Charles Anderson Moore and Lillian Moon Moore of Chatham, Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Billie Henslee Moore, his daughter, Mary Jim Quillen, son-in-law, Michael C. Quillen, and three grandchildren, Henry, Mary Rogers, and James Quillen. He is also survived by two sisters, Polly Light (Nelson) and Betsy Easley (Alonza), and numerous nephews and nieces. Mr. Moore was a member of Oak Grove Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia and a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club. He was an Honor Graduate in 1940 of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, now known as Virginia Tech. Mr. Moore was employed by Southern Railway Company from 1939 until 1983 in a number of management positions including Division Superintendent, Chief Engineer of Maintenance of Way, General Superintendent of Transportation, and General Manager of Eastern Lines. After his retirement from Southern Railway Company, he became a consultant for National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) and later Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. He retired from that position in 1989, having devoted 50 years of service to the Railroad industry. A graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery on Friday, June 6, 2008 at 10:30 AM. CHATHAM, Va. - Charles Anderson Moore, age 87, of 2636 Callands Road, Chatham, died Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born on August 6, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, the son of the late Charles Anderson Moore Sr. and Lillian Moon Moore. He was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church, where he had served as clerk, deacon, trustee, and in other ministries. Mr. Moore was a life-time farmer and served in the Navy four years during World War II, including Pearl Harbor and Midway Island.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lillian Anderson Moore; two sons, Temple C. Moore and his wife, Lucy and Terry A. Moore and his wife, Renee, both of Chatham; three grandchildren, Cam, Christine, and Megan Moore; two sisters, Betsy M. Easley of Chatham and Polly M. Light of Virginia Beach; one brother, Henry Moore of Atlanta, Ga.; and 20 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy M. Nuckols.
Funeral services will be conducted at Hollywood Baptist Church on Saturday, June 25 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Bill Soyars and the Rev. Haywood Alcorn officiating. Burial will be at Hollywood Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Hollywood Baptist Church on Friday, June 24 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Chatham Rescue Squad or the Hollywood Baptist Church.
Scott Funeral Home, Chatham, is in charge of arrangements.

Betsy Moore Easley, 88, of Chatham, died Monday, July 19, 2010, at Chatham Health and Rehabilitation Center in Chatham. She was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, the daughter of the late Charles Anderson Moore Sr. and the late Lillian Moon Moore.

She was a faithful and active member of Concord United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. She was a graduate of Longwood College. She taught school in Pittsylvania County and Woodlawn Academy.

Mrs. Easley was married to the late Alonza Herbert "Monk" Easley Jr.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty E. Holley, and her husband, Rodger, of Winston Salem, N.C.; four sons, Alonza Herbert "Al" Easley III and his wife, Ginger, of North Potomac, Md., Henry Moore Easley and his wife, Susan, of Chatham, and Calvin Fuller Easley Sr. and his wife, Michelle, of Ringgold; one sister, Polly M. Light, of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Sarah Ellen Easley; two brothers, Charles Moore and Henry Moore; one sister, Nancy M. Nuckols; and one great-granddaughter, Veronica Jane Easley.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at Concord United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kotosha Seals and the Rev. Allan Murphy officiating. Burial will be at Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today, July 20, 2010, at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of her son, Henry Easley, Chatham.

The family suggest in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Concord United Methodist Church Building Fund or the .

Scott Funeral Home in Chatham is respectfully serving the Easley family.

Nuckols, Richard Hodnett

CHATHAM, Va. - Richard Hodnett Nuckols, 1601 Double Bridge Road, Chatham, VA, age 46, died at the Danville Regional Medical Center Monday, January 5, 2004 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. His birthday was November 26, 1957.

Richard was the youngest son of the late William Bryan Nuckols and the late Nancy Moore Nuckols.

Richard was educated in Pittsylvania County Schools and attended Danville Community College. He also attended Bell & Howell School of Electronics in Atlanta, GA and lived there for five years and worked for Westinghouse. He lived most of his life in Chatham, VA, where he grew up on a dairy farm. Later he worked several places such as Times Fiber and Riverside Roof Truss. He enjoyed wood work and built several pieces of furniture. At the time he became ill, he was in the process of renovating his home.

On June 20, 1987, Richard married Mary Chamblin Nuckols, who survives. He was the proud father of two daughters, who adored their Daddy, Lydia Ellen Nuckols and Julia Grace Nuckols, both of the residence. He was the son-in-law of Wayne and Jeane Chamblin, who survive. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Moore Nuckols. In addition to his wife and children, he leaves behind his brothers and their spouses, W.B. (Billy) Nuckols and his wife Jean Nuckols of Chatham, Robert Edward Nuckols and his wife Patsy Nuckols of Chatham and Ralph Moore Nuckols of Greensboro, North Carolina; two sisters and their spouses, Jane Whitehead and Bruce Whitehead of Tallahassee, Florida and Mary Grace Paden and John Paden of Richmond, VA.

He also leaves behind nephews and nieces, Bill and Linette Nuckols, Carl and Sherri Nuckols, Katherine Nuckols, Holly Nuckols, Keenan Nuckols, Andrea Nuckols Harris and Bud Harris, Bryan Nuckols, John Motley and Ashley Motley and Tonya Motley. He was a great uncle to Michael Nuckols, Will Nuckols, James Nuckols, Trevor Nuckols, Lauren Nuckols and Alana Motley.

He loved his family very much as they love him and he will be greatly missed by them.

Visitation will be at Hollywood Baptist Church Tuesday, January 6, 2004 from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. at Hollywood Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Davis presiding.

Scott Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hollywood Baptist Church or the Richard Nuckols Fund at Peoples National Bank in Chatham, Virginia.
