The Arthur Family of Culleybackey, Ireland and Bedford Co, VA
    1660 – 1831

Arthur Family Notes for Jemima Arthur who married 1st Peter Claywell Jurney and 2nd William S. Holland

The Arthur Family of Cullybackey, Ireland

    And Bedford County, Virginia

The Dreen Road in Antrim County, Cullybackey township, leads to Arthur Cottage, ancestral home of Chester Alan Arthur, 21st President of the USA.

    Cullybackey township, County Antrim, Ireland:
“The County Antrim is home to an area of glens in addition to such pastoral towns as Cullybackey. Stones and artifacts dating back to the Stone Age are found here, indicating that ancestors of present Cullybackey residents could very well have lived here. Some of the local names, for example the glen Glenravel, which means the glen of the berries, and St. Patrick's well, indicate ties to Celtic lifestyle and St. Patrick.

The name Cullybackey has become so Anglicised as to render its interpretation difficult, sufficient of the original spelling remains to indicate that it is composed of two Irish words. There are at least two possible interpretations."Cully" – a derivative of "Coill" – a woodland, and "Backey" a derivative of "Beith" – a Birch Tree, thus rendering the meaning of the name as "The Woodland of the Birch Trees". There are numerous birch trees in the area and they form part of the original flora of the neighborhood.

Alternatively, "Cully" from "Coole", a corner and "Backey" from "Bac" a spade; "The Corner of the Spades". There is a tradition that a forge for the manufacture of shods (plates for wooden spades) formerly stood on the site of the Cuningham Memorial Church. The spade maker obtained his fuel from the surrounding forest and his profession was highly regarded in the community. No doubt his forge by the riverside, because of its warmth and shelter, was the rendezvous of the locals and its name "Coolebac", the Corner of the Spades, became applied to the cluster of habitations build up around it.

The Arthur Family of Cullybackey, Ireland and Bedford County, Virginia.

The Dreen Road in Antrim County, Cullybackey township, leads to Arthur Cottage, ancestral home of Chester Alan Arthur, 21st President of the USA.

    Cullybackey township, County Antrim, Ireland:
The County Antrim is home to an area of glens in addition to such pastoral towns as Cullybackey. There are at least two possible interpretations. "Cully" a derivative of "Coill" a woodland, and "Backey" a derivative of "Beith" a Birch Tree, thus rendering the meaning of the name as "The Woodland of the Birch Trees".

Revolutionary War Series Continues With Benjamin Arthur
    Highland Guideposts by Jean Wallis

This week's column continues the series of articles on Revolutionary War soldiers buried in Highland County, whose names appear on the bronze plaque located on the south wall of the courthouse placed there by the Waw-wil-a-way Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution in 1930.

Benjamin Arthur was born April 27, 1737, in Virginia. In 1781, during the American Revolution, he served as captain of a company of Bedford County, Va. milita. On March 9, 1782, he was commissioned a lieutenant of the Campbell County, Va., militia. The Campbell County militia had been formed from Bedford County in 1782. In 1781, Benjamin married Sarah Terrell in Bedford County. Sarah was born 1755, the daughter of David Terrell and his wife Sarah Johnson. According to DAR records, Benjamin and Sarah were the parents of 12 children. Sarah Arthur died circa 1800, when the youngest child Christopher was two years old.

Christopher Arthur was born Dec. 15, 1798, in Lynchburg, Campbell County, Va. When he was 11 years old, he came to Highland County in the winter of 1809. He spent the winter in the home of John Walter and attended school. He made his home with his uncles who lived in Fairfield Township. Afterward he lived with his older brother, Pleasant Arthur, and still later was associated with him in business. In 1812, Pleasant and Christopher moved to Hillsboro. Pleasant Arthur was a skilled master carpenter, and from him Christopher learned the trade of carpenter and cabinetmaker. They were the first in the town of Hillsboro to connect the carpenter trade with cabinet-making. The brothers were the principal builders in Hillsboro, at a time when brick and frame were replacing the first log cabins. In 1818, Benjamin Arthur moved from Virginia and joined his sons in Highland County. Benjamin died March 27, 1820, at the home of his son, Pleasant. He was 83 years old and was buried in the High Top Cemetery in Penn Township. On Jan. 25, 1810, Pleasant Arthur married Agnes Timberlake, the daughter of John Timberlake and his wife, Mary (Mollie) Johnson. Agnes, being a Quaker, was "disowned for marrying contrary to discipline" on April 28, 1810. By 1823, records show that Pleasant and Agnes had moved to Hamilton County, but by the year 1826, they had returned. Pleasant Arthur served numerous terms as county commissioner in Highland County. On Oct. 14, 1820, Christopher Arthur married Nancy Roads. Nancy, was born 1802, the daughter of Gustava and Margaret Roads. Christopher and Nancy were the parents of 14 known children; William R., born 1821, married Elizabeth Ann Stuart and they lived in Illinois; James, no information; Samuel, born 1824, married Nancy Jane Stafford; Pleasant, born 1828, married Effa Ann Evans and they lived in Illinois; Margaret, born 1830, married A. W. Evans; Joshua R. born 1832, no information; Mary, born 1835, married R. N. Glenn; Sarah Jane, born 1837, married Joseph A. Hill; Thomas died in infancy; Charles, born 1839, lived in Iowa; Joseph H., born 1841, married Mary M. Evans; John W., born 1843 served in the Civil War and Dudley C., born 1846, married Nancy Ann Evans. On Feb. 13, 1832, the county commissioners - Pleasant Arthur, William Carothers, and Phillip W. Spargur "met pursuant to adjournment and in addition to their routine business, awarded to Jonathan Harvey the contract for building a new courthouse, according to elaborate specifications by them provided." History tells us the architect for the Highland County Courthouse was Christopher Arthur. Harvey undertook the job upon an agreement that he should receive therefor $6,600. John Smith and John Jones were his securities. Harvey died in 1832 and with the work being uncompleted, a second contract was awarded to Christopher Arthur on Feb. 4 with Joshua Woodrow, John Smith and John A. Trimble as securities. The final payment was made to Arthur on April 4, 1835. In 1838, Christopher Arthur was one of the trustees of the Methodist Church in Hillsboro, when they purchased a house and lot on the southeast corner of West Walnut and South West Streets for a church parsonage. Christopher Arthur is credited with the building of the Allen Trimble home on present day Central Avenue and the frame home of William Henry Trimble, which once stood on Beekin Drive and was destroyed by fire many years ago. The Highland House Museum and the William Scott house on West Main Street can also be attributed to Christopher Arthur. But one Highland County Courthouse is the crowning jewel of his work. Sometime during the 1850's Christopher and Nancy retired to their farm north of Hillsboro where they lived the remainder of their lives. Nancy died May 27, 1864, and Christopher followed her on Jan. 12, 1885, at the age of 86 years. They are buried in the Hillsboro Cemetery along with other members of their family.

    136. Benjamin Arthur (1737-1820) & 137. Ann Arthur (1741-1777)
Benjamin Arthur, son of Ambrose and Keziah, was born 27 April 1737 in Campbell County near Lynchburg, Virginia. He died 27 March 1820 in Hillsboro, Highland, Ohio. According to Edwin P. Arthur, “About 1756, on the frontier of a place that became the State of Virginia, a ten year old boy was sent horseback to the mill with a bag of corn to be ground into meal. When he returned, he found his home in flames, his father, mother, all brothers and sisters slowly bleeding to death. They had been scalped by Native Americans in a surprise raid. He was alone in the wilderness with clothes on his back, a horse, and a sack of corn meal. He was taken in by his nearest neighbors, William Arthur and his wife Ann,” his uncle and aunt. Benjamin married first to Ann Arthur, daughter of William Arthur and Ann Calvert, on 23 April 1765 in Bedford County, Virginia. Benjamin's parents, Ambrose b: abt. 1708 in Ireland -- the fourth (4th) Arthur brother, and his wife Keziah Hargrove, daughter of Augustine Hargrove and Mary Lane, were killed by Indians and he was raised by his uncle William Arthur (1713) and aunt Ann Murray Arthur (1717). Benjamin would marry William and Ann Murray Arthur's daughter (his cousin) Anne Arthur (1741-1777) on April 23, 1765.

Joseph Hargrove was bound to Benjamin Arthur on February 14, 1760 in Caroline Co., VA as found in John Frederick Dorman, Caroline County, VA Order Book 1759-1763.

Thomas Arthur (1710), Benjamin's uncle, was Joseph Hargrove's guardian, and Thomas bound Joseph to work with Benjamin. Joseph was a minor brother of Benjamin's mother Keziah. Benjamin was raised by his uncle and not his grandparents, Augustine Hargrove and Mary Lane Hargrove even though they lived closer, and there were stories that Old Augustine was not "right in the head."

In 1781, during the American Revolution, he served as captain of a company of Bedford County, Va. militia.

He was 83 years old and was buried in the High Top Cemetery in Penn Township…

Campbell County was formed from Bedford County in 1782. The following text was found at Stith Family Genealogy, Colonial Era,

No change was then made from the military system long in use in Virginia as embodied in the code prescribed by George III at the close of the French and Indian War, which provided that in each county there should be a chief military officer known as the county-lieutenant, below him in rank a colonel, lieutenant-colonel and major. A regiment consisted of 500 men or ten companies of 50 men each; company officers being captain, lieutenant, ensign, and several sergeants. The lieutenant and those above him were known as "field officers” and those of lower rank as "subalterns."

James Callaway who had been county-lieutenant of Bedford, now became a Campbell resident, received this highest office in the new county by commission from Governor Benjamin Harrison. Charles Lynch was appointed Colonel of Militia, John Callaway lieutenant colonel; and William Henderson, Major. Owen Franklin, Thomas McReynolds, William Jordan (son-in-law of Richard Stith, Sr., since Wm. Jordan married Lucy Stith daughter of Richard Stith, John Irvine, Josias Bullock and Thomas Johnson were made captains; with Archelaus Moon, Benjamin Arthur, John Helm Charles Moile Talbot, lieutenants; and Joseph Stith (eldest son of Richard Stith, Sr.), Plummer Thurston,
Shelldrake Brown, Jr., James Stewart, and Charles Gilliam, ensigns.
