Notes:

Joseph Echols (1735-1789) married first Elizabeth King and second in 1772, Elizabeth Street. On 20 September 1751 Joseph and Isaac Echols obtained individual patents to land on Straightstone Creek in Lunenburg County. We presume this was this Joseph Echols and his brother. Joseph's patent was for 400 acres. We speculate that he was the same Joseph Echols who had a patent for 272 acres in Lunenburg County on both sides of Sandy Creek in 1756. A cousin and uncle of the same name were in the area. As Joseph Echols Jr he had a patent for a 13-acre island in the Staunton River 29 November 1756. In 1785 the plantation upon which Joseph lived had nine cabins, including a 640-square foot dwelling and a mill. Ten whites were then in his family. Joseph was dead by 1792, intestate, and the court granted Obediah Echols administration. A chancery suit and the division of land of Joseph Echols in 1794 reveals the names of his surviving 12 children.

8 Abraham Echols was a resident of Monongalia County, now West Virginia, in 1797 when he sold his inheritance to James Echols of Bedford County.
9 Rebecca Echols was in Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1797 when she sold her inheritance to James Echols.
10 Tabitha Echols married Elijah Lacy in Halifax County 12 January (bond) 1802.
11 David Echols (14 Jan. 1776 - 18 Feb. 1854) married Diana Tribble (14 Jan. 1784 - 12 May 1848), a daughter of James Tribble, in Halifax County 29 May (bond) 1802. They were the parents of eleven children born 1803-1823.
12 Moses Echols married Elizabeth Hicks in Campbell County 9 February (bond) 1807.
13 Judith Echols , a daughter of Joseph Echols, married Benjamin Gosnell in Halifax County 24 March (bond) 1788. She evidently died before the distribution of her father's estate.

NATHANIEL ROGERS. A will probated in Charles County, Va., September 4, 1786, mentions legatees, all grown, Thomas, John and Nathaniel Rodgers and Samuel, James, Andrew and Benjamin Rogers, and daughters, wives of
James Moore, Abraham Echols and John Robertson. (Note the spelling of the name which in 1802, Nathaniel explained, by saying, that they signed it just as the clerks wrote in patents, deeds, etc., to prevent confusion.)
Have a copy of a patent to Thomas Rogers, April 4, 1769, with eight headrights located in Bedford County, Va. Thomas Rogers, Jr. and Jean, his wife, made deed to Matthew Jones, of Dinwiddie County, for 400 acres in 1779. In 1793 Samuel Clayton gives power of attorney to Andrew Rogers,
of Kentucky, to convey land, etc. Nathaniel Rogers came to Bourbon County, Ky., March 14, 1798, married Frances Cobbs and had William, Anne, Walton and Elizabeth Anne. James Rogers and wife, Anne Phelps settled on
Cane Ridge. Their daughter, Ann and two sons, Thomas and John, moved to Washington Co. Anne, Thomas and John appear in deed to C. and J. Colcord, February 15, 1828, of lands from their grandfather, John Phelps. Samuel,
son of Thomas and Elizabeth, daughter of Maj. John Brent, of the Continental line.

LOCATED, on rt. 703( THE IRISH ROAD), west, off rt.29, at Tightsqueeze va, go past Chatham High School about 2 miles. About 1/4 mile past the Concord Methodist Church on left. cemetery is about 200' off road beside old 2 story house. This house is next door to the home of Mr Edward and Clara Shelton, 681 Irish Rd, the current land owners. This land was once owned by Benjamin Riddle and Nancy Giles Riddle (my gggg-grandparents). I feel very certain that my ggg-grandparents are buried here or directly across the road. My ggg-grandfather was , Jesse McNeely, b abt 1800, d 1837. His wife was Francis (Fannie) Riddle McNeely (daughter of Benjamin and Nancy Riddle), b abt 1794, d Jan 1823 (at child-birth). I believe that Benjamin and Nancy Riddle and their son Rueben Riddle are buried here too. They all were living here at the time of their deaths. The farm was sold to a Mr Anthony after Rueben died. Anthony was a minister at the OLD BANNISTER RIVER BAPTIST CH, which was about was about 1/2 mile farther down the road, just past the river, on north side of road.

Will of David Echols, 1853

I, David Echols of the County of Pittsylvania, State of Virginia, being of sound mind & disposing memory & calling to mind the uncertainty of human life do by these presents, on the 31st day of May, 1853, make this my Last Will &
Testament hereby revoking all wills by me heretofore made.

1st I desire and direct my Executor hereinafter named immediately after my decease to pay all my just debts.

2nd I devise to my wife Nancy Echols one negro woman Jane and her increase if any. One negro boy Bob. One negro woman Eady. One horse all my stock of cattle, hogs, sheep, house hold & kitchen furniture, plantation utensils. Stock of provisions of every description, including whatever may be due to me from William A. Anthony for rent. Also three hundred dollars in cash to her and her heirs forever.

3rd I devise to my daughter, Sarah Anthony, the wife of William A. Anthony the sum of Four hundred and sixty one dollars and eighty five cents to be paid to her out of the money due to me at my death from William A. Anthony on account of a tract of land sold him to the said Sarah Anthony and her heirs forever.

4th I devise to my daughter Susan S. Scates the wife of Grief D. Scates the sum of nine hundred and seventeen dollars and seven cents to be paid to her out of the money due to me at my death from William A. Anthony on account of a tract of land sold him to the said Susan S. Scates and her heirs forever.

I devise to Coalman P. Bennett in trust for my daughter Levina Heurt the wife of Robert S. Heurt one negro girl Phillis and her increase if any during the life of my said daughter Levina and at her death I devise the girl to Susan Heurt. Daughter of Robert S. & Levina Heurt the negro girl Phillis and her increase to the said Susan Heurt and her heirs forever.

7th I devise to my grand son William J. Echols the sum of one thousand dollars, to be paid to him by my Executor hereinafter named upon his arriving at the age of twenty one years together with the interest that may accrue on the same from the time of my death. Also one negro boy Jack to be delivered to him by my executor hereinafter named upon my said grand son arriving at the age of twenty one years together with whatever his the said the said boys hires may be from the time of my death - in the event my said grand son William J. Echols should die before he arrives at the age of twenty one years or the legacy aforesaid is paid over & delivered to him then I devise the legacy contained in this seventh clause shall be equally divided between Coalman Echols, Moses Echols, Obadiah Echols, Sarah Anthony, Susan S. Scates, Coalman D. Bennett trustee for Levina Heurt the interest of the said Levina Heurt to be paid to her annually in the event any right or interest should accrue to her under this seventh clause and at her death to be paid to the heirs of her body.

8th I devise to my cousin Moses Hubbard of Franklin County thirty dollars a year to be paid to him annually during his life by my Executor hereinafter named - five hundred dollars to be retained by my Executor in his hands during the life of Moses Hubbard - the annual interest to be applied to the legacy aforesaid.

9th I devise to Coalman Echols, Moses Echols, Obadiah Echols, Sarah Anthony, Susan S. Scates, Coalman D. Bennett, trustee for Levina Heurt an equal amount of the balance of the money that may be due me at my death - including the five hundred dollars imbraced in the 8th clause of this my will after the decease of Moses Hubbard aforesaid - The annual interest held by Coalman D. Bennett in trust for Levina Heurt to be paid to her annually during her life and at her death that portion to be equally divided between the heirs of her body.

Lastly, I appoint Coalman D. Bennett Executor of this my will in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand on the day and year aforesaid.

I have that Dinah Tribble was the daughter of James Tribble and ? (perhaps a Collins*). Her father married (2) Nancy (Spurbanks?) on Apr 17, 1802 in Halifax Co, VA. Dinah's siblings were:
1. Tabitha Tribble - married (1) Thomas Word; (2) Richard Horn (I have more information of this branch)
2. Isaac Tribble
3. Ann Tribble
4. Mary "Polly" Tribble - married Glennis Blankenship
* I have an old letter from a distant relative that indicates that Tabitha had said her Mother was a "Collins".

Hugh Malone discovered Wilson Co., TN Chancery Bk 1, pp 281-287, Owen vs. Tribble. This suit identifies the sisters and brother of Dinah Tribble (m. David Echols) as: Tabitha (m. Richard Horn), Sarah (m. Henry Street), Ann, Mary (m. Glennis Blankenship), and Isaiah. Also identified were half-sisters Fanny (m. John T. Davis) and Lucy.
Dinah and her sisters and brother were children of James Tribble and his first wife, name unknown. The half-sisters were the children of James Tribble and Nancy Spurbanks. Tabitha did marry first, Thomas Ward.

Five slaves left to heirs:

...to my wife Nancy Echols one negro woman Jane and her increase if any. One negro boy Bob. One negro woman Eady.

Harriet Echols, also came from Pittsylvania County, Virginia to Marshall County, Mississippi, in the late 1830s. Jeremiah and Harriet were third cousins. Their line of descent goes back to "Old" John Echols and Mary Cave; Jeremiah descending from John and Mary's son, William I, through William II and William III; and Harriet descending from John and Mary's son, Abraham, through Joseph Echols and Elizabeth Street and their son, David Echols and Dinah Tribble who married 3 June 1802. When Jeremiah and Harriet married in Marshall County, Mississippi, on 12 October 1841, they made their home in the adjoining cunty, which was then DeSoto County, Mississippi. Tate County was formed out of DeSoto County in 1873. The children born to Jeremiah and Harriet were Joel Turner, Susan Luvenia, Mary D., David E., and Frances Jeremiah.

Jeremiah and Harriet lived on land owned by his brother, John, until Jeremiah's death, at which time John, who had moved to Texas, sold that land so he would have no holdings in Mississippi to see about. Harriet, being a strong person in both personality and perserverance, managed to buy 300 acres of land in the Crockett area, and later bought other land connected to the 300. The Echols' had donated a plot for a Baptist Church and space for a cemetery in that area. It was in that cemetery that both Jeremiah and Harriet were buried. In the 1990's I went into that area to locate the land and the cemetery. The church had been gone many, many years; but I learned that the cemetery had been destroyed in abut 1937 when a new road was cut through. An elderly gentleman who owned and lived on some of the land that Harriet had bouhgt in 1856, showed me where the cemetery had been. He lived there in 1937 when the road came through. I asked him about the tombstones, and he told me they were simply covered over with dirt scraped from the hillside as the road was made.

JOHN ECHOLS (1823?1896)

John Echols (20 March 1823?24 May 1896), member of the Convention of 1861 and Confederate army officer, was born in Lynchburg and was the son of Joseph Echols and Elizabeth Frances Lambeth Echols. After graduating from Washington College (later Washington and Lee University) in 1840, he enrolled that summer at the Virginia Military Institute. Echols resigned from VMI on 14 August 1841 but later was made an honorary graduate of the Class of 1843. He also studied law at Harvard College.

After a brief stint teaching in Harrisonburg, Echols was admitted to the bar in Rockbridge County in October 1843. He practiced law in Staunton before moving to Monroe County. There Echols executed a marriage bond on 20 November 1844 and on that date or soon afterward married Mary Jane Caperton, whose father Hugh Caperton had sat in the House of Representatives for a single term. Their one daughter and two sons included Edward Echols, who served as lieutenant governor of Virginia from 1898 to 1902.

Echols served as commonwealth's attorney and in December 1851 won election as a Whig representing Monroe County in the House of Delegates during the sessions that met from January to June 1852 and from November 1852 to April 1853. He sat on the Committee on Roads and Internal Navigation and on joint committees to examine the treasurer's accounts and for the protection of slave property and for the removal of free blacks from the state. At the time of the 1850 census he owned two adult and three young slaves, and a decade later he owned four adult and two young slaves.

The Convention of 1861

On 4 February 1861 Echols and his brother-in-law Allen Taylor Caperton were chosen to represent Monroe County in a convention called to determine Virginia's response to the secession crisis. He sat on the Committees on Finance and on Military Affairs. On 1 March he offered resolutions calling on Congress to recognize the Confederate States as an independent nation. Echols sided with the majority voting against secession on 4 April. Following the firing on Fort Sumter and Abraham Lincoln's call for troops to suppress the rebellion, he voted on 17 April for secession, and in a speech several days later he called for sound planning and efficient military organization. Echols later signed the Ordinance of Secession. He resigned from the convention on 11 November, before the third and final session met.

The Civil War

On 30 May 1861 Echols was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the 27th Regiment Virginia Infantry, which he had organized and which fought as part of the Stonewall Brigade. In part because of his actions commanding the regiment at the First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) on 21 July, he won promotion to colonel on 14 October. Echols received severe wounds in his arm and shoulder at the First Battle of Kernstown, near Winchester, on 23 March 1862 but returned to service after being promoted to brigadier general on 18 April, to date from 16 April. He then served under Major General William Wing Loring, whom he succeeded as commander of the Department of Western Virginia and East Tennessee, operating in the Kanawha valley.

Citing ill health, Echols tendered his resignation as brigadier general on 30 June 1863, a request approved on 3 July but then disallowed. He sat on a board of inquiry investigating the Confederate failure at Vicksburg and in November commanded troops in the Confederate defeat at the Battle of Droop Mountain, in West Virginia. On 15 May 1864 Echols fought at the Battle of New Market and then marched to reinforce Confederate troops defending Richmond. He led his regiments at the Battle of Cold Harbor late in May and early in June. Threatening Washington, D.C., on 9 July 1864 Echols commanded a brigade at the Battle of Monocacy, near Frederick, Maryland.

During the autumn and winter of 1864, Echols deployed troops to Floyd County to suppress Confederate deserters and their secret Unionist supporters. On 29 March 1865 he was reappointed commander of the Department of Western Virginia and East Tennessee. Following the Army of Northern Virginia's surrender at Appomattox Court House on 9 April, Echols led a band of cavalrymen who escorted Confederate president Jefferson Davis from Salisbury to Charlotte, North Carolina. Echols was paroled at Greensboro on 1 May 1865, took the amnesty oath on 13 June, and received a presidential pardon on 4 November.

Restoration and Ratification

After the Civil War, Echols moved to Staunton and resumed practicing law. Beginning in December 1868 he worked closely with several other prominent residents of Augusta County to broker a compromise ending Reconstruction in Virginia and easing the state's readmission to the Union. Echols helped select the delegates (later informally designated the Committee of Nine) who arranged with the president and key members of Congress for ratification of a new state constitution that restored voting rights for former Confederates and that guaranteed suffrage rights for African American men.

In November 1877 Augusta County voters elected Echols to the House of Delegates, where he chaired the Committee on Militia and Police and sat on the Committees on Asylums and Prisons and on Finance. An opponent of readjusting the state debt, he won reelection in 1879, this time also representing Staunton. Echols continued on the Committees on Asylums and Prisons and on Finance and joined the Committee on Banks, Currency and Commerce. He was a Democratic presidential elector at large in 1880. He had served on the VMI board of visitors from 1858 to 1861, and in June 1869 he was appointed to the board of trustees of Washington College, on which he sat until his death. Echols became receiver and general manager of the Chesapeake, Ohio and Southwestern Railroad Company and president of the National Valley Bank of Staunton. Because of his duties in the former position, he spent a good deal of time in Louisville, Kentucky, working closely with the railroad magnate Collis Potter Huntington.

Echols's wife died on 6 October 1874, and sometime before June 1880 he married Mary Cochran Reid, a widow from New York City with three children. They had no children. John Echols died of Bright's disease, a kidney ailment, at the home of his son in Staunton on 24 May 1896. He was buried in Thornrose Cemetery, in that city.

The obituary of MARY JANE ECHOLS GILMORE

Mrs. M. J. (Mary Jane) Gilmore, daughter of deceased J. H. and Sarah Echols, was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, September 25th, 1831. She was the devoted daughter of devoted Christian parents who carefully looked after her early moral and intellectual training, giving her every advantage then offered the young in their community. At the age of seventeen, she professed faith and hope in Christ.

January 16th, 1850, she was happily united in marriage with W. W. Gilmore of Campbell Co., Va. In 1852, she identified herself with the Presbyterian Church of which she remained a retiring but faithful and honored member until her death. In 1858 she moved with her husband into this community, where she has since been a prominent member of society and a blessing to her neighbors. With great pleasure she visited the sick and did whatever else she could to relieve the suffering, and the distressed, but her meekness and modesty ever concealed her true worth from those who did not have the pleasure of knowing her intimately. As a mother, she was tender and loving in her watchful care over her children. She was the only sister of the Rev. J. W. Echols for whom she ever cherished the fondest affection. For some months before her death it became sadly evident that she was hopelessly consumptive and for a long while she was confined to her room and largely to her bed, but she was patient, hopeful and che "Mister, thou art gone to rest We will not weep for thee, For thou art now, where oft on earth Thy spirit longed to be. Tis true, thou art gone to rest,Thy toil and cares are o'er, And sorrow, pain and suffering now Shall ne'er distress thee more."

Joseph William Echols, was the son of Joel Hubbard Echols & Sarah W. Anthony. Per his own testimony he was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in 1833.

Joseph moved to DeSoto County, Missisisppi in July of 1849. He lived eight miles west of Senatobia for five years. In October of 1851, he joined the Old Salem Baptist Church and tried to live a Christian life from there on. Then he return to Virginia where he married Minerva Susan EASLEY on 5 SEP 1855. They had at least seven children together: Annie E., Joel P., Emma J., M. Ellen, Eula Lee, Willie Sue and infant.

Soon after, he returned to DeSoto County, Mississippi to a land he described as: "country . . .divided into large plantations. Where were only a few settlements between my home and Helena. Neither were there any roads or cleared land west of Arkabutla."

In 1860, Joseph enlisted to serve in the Civil War but after three months, he had to hire a substitute on account of bad health. He described his part of the country as "relatively quite during the war, though we were frightened pretty much at times."

In 1869 Joseph moved to a place just west of Senatobia until he moved into town around 1907.

In 1897, Joseph married his cousin, the widow Mary D. (nee Echols) Garrett HUNTER. This was Mary D's third marriage. Mary died on July 19th, 1902. Joseph married a final time to Nancy Juliet DEES. Juliet died onDecember 11th, 1917.

Joseph died around 1927 and was buried next to his three wives in Bethesda Cemetery in Senatobia, Tate, Mississippi.

Found on the 1860 census for DeSoto County Mississippi as a physician in the home of the Dillahunty family. Dr. Anthony's net worth is $10,000. No mention of wife or children.

For the 1870 census, HL Anthony, 40 is living with Mollie Bowdre (his new wife), age 22. Mollie has a daughter named Hosia, age 3. Also living in the home is a child named Homer, age 8, possibly a nephew but not a son, given that his first wife died in 1857, before this young man was born. HL Anthony's net worth in 1870 is $5,000.

For the 1900 Census, Homer's name was falsely given as "Henry L. Anthony", but it is the same man, married to his fourth wife, Augusta (they have been married for 15 years). He is living in Ashley County Arkansas.

Attended the first Baptist World Alliance in London, England in 1904 with Rev. Penn Arthur Anthony. He was killed/murdered in 1907 in London, shortly before marrying for the seventh time (engaged to Martha Davis Anthony).

According to Jack Dandridge in an Anthony Family Genealogy Forum letter dated October 1, 2002:

"... Dr. Homer Anthony ... was murdered. This is a really interesting story. Homer was one of 9 children of William Henry Anthony, Snr. (1798-1866) and Sarah Echols (1811-1853). In January 1853 after the death of his first wife Morgiana in Aug 1852, he moved to Mississippi, where he practiced medicine for 21 years including service in the Confederate Army. He was a surgeon in Armstrong's Brigade and then had charge of a field hospital. Later he was transferred to Jackson, Miss.; afterward to Atlanta, Ga. After the war, he returned to and remained in Mississippi until 1874 when he moved to Ashley Co., Ark. There he divided his time with his profession and planting. He owned 640 acres. In 1880 he was living with his sixth wife, formerly Miss Augusta Shelton of Louisana; they had no children. He was a Mason and a Whig. (Anthony Roots & Branches p.347).

In 1904, on the way to the 1st Baptist World Alliance Convention in London Dr. Homer Anthony showed his shipmate and cousin, Rev. Penn Anthony, a picture of Homer's intended 7th wife, Martha Davis Anthony. While in London, Homer's body was found, absent his money belt, dead on a side road in or near London. Rev. Penn Anthony wrote to Homer's brother for instructions on shipping Homer's body back to the U.S. Uncertain as to which of his six wives to bury him beside, his family instructed Rev. Anthony to have him interred in London.

David fought in the civil war in Company G, Woods Regiment, 1st Mississippi Calvary, under Adams. He was a scout for the confederate troops. He sold items from a horse-drawn cart and was allowed to move freely among the troops of both the north and the south. In this capacity he was able to gather information from the north troops and carry it to the confederates. He suffered injuries during that war, and in 1877 he supposedly died from the results of those wounds. His wife Mattie died the year before and the three surviving children were raised by relatives, one child had died as an infant.

Mary Diana* "Mollie" ECHOLS was born on January 7th, 1848 to Jeremiah ECHOLS & his cousin Harriett ECHOLS. They lived in Mississippi at the time. Jeremiah was the son of William ECHOLS and Mary Elizabeth FARMER. Harriett was the daughter of David ECHOLS & Dinal TRIBBLE. At the age of two, Mary D. lost her father, Jeremiah, when he died at the age of thirty-eight of a heart ailment.

On December 16th, 1866, at the age of eighteen, Mollie married Ambrose Christopher GARRETT, the son of Elijah & Polly Ann GARRETT. They had two daughters: Rena & Florence. Around 1870, Ambrose & Mollie assumed guardianship over the children of Ambrose's first cousin, Gabriel M. WRIGHT when he and his wife, Mary Polly (Garrett), died of the Measles. Ambrose & Mollie also took care of three nieces/nephews: Fanny, Martha & Stonewalll McDONALD, which made for a full house for such a young couple.

On March 24th, 1874, Mollie lost her thirty-year-old husband. Mollie continued as guardian of the three WRIGHT children after Ambrose's death. Soon after, she married John. H. HUNTER, son of James Wyatt & Lucinda Wills (Garrett) HUNTER. They had three sons: John H. Jr; Sledge, and Fred.

By 1880, Mollie lived in Longtown, Panola county, Mississippi. A nephew, Jeremiah "Jerry" ECHOLS lived with her, while Jerry's brother, Isham Turner ECHOLS lived with John H. HUNTER's brother, James (and Deliah) HUNTER.

Per the 1900 census, it states that Molllie was the mother of 8 children but only 3 were still alive (Florence GARRETT, Sledge HUNTER, & Fred HUNTER).

Following the death of her second husband, Mollie married her cousin, Joseph William ECHOLS, around 1897. Joseph was the son of Joel Hubbard & Sarah W. (Anthony) ECHOLS and grandson of David & Dinal (Tribble) ECHOLS. Joseph & Mary lived in Tate county, MS. Mollie died on July 19th, 1902 and was buried in Bethesda Cemetery. Her tombstone is shared with Joseph's 1st wife, Minerva Susan EASLEY.

Frances Jeremiah Echols's father, Jeremiah died in May 1850. She was born in January of 1851, never having the chance to know her father. Her mother wanted her to carry on the name of Jeremiah. Frances Jeremiah Echols mother and father were third cousins - Jeremiah Echols and Harriet Echols were from Virginia.

When Frances J. Echols died, Syndnor Coleman Giles married Cora Echols on 8 August, 1894 in Tate County, Mississippi.

LOCATED, on rt. 703( THE IRISH ROAD), west,off
rt.29, at Tightsqueeze va., go past Chatham High School, about 2 miles. about 1/4 mile past the Concord Methodist Church, on left. cemetery is about 200' off rd., beside old 2 story house. this house is next door to the home of Mr.
edward and Clara Shelton, 681 Irish Rd. the current land owners. this land was once owned by Benjamin Riddle and Nancy Giles Riddle( my gggg-grandparents). I feel very certain that my ggg-grandparents are buried here or directly across the road. my ggg-grandfather was , Jesse McNeely, b.abt.1800 - d.1837, his wife was, Francis (fannie) Riddle McNeely, ( daughter of Benjamin and Nancy Riddle), b. abt. 1794 - d.jan.1823(at child-birth). also, i believe that Benjamin and Nancy Riddle are buried here too. their son, Rueben Riddle also. for they all were living here at the time of their deaths. the farm was sold to a mr. Anthony after Rueben died. Anthony was a minister at the OLD BANNISTER RIVER BAPTIST CH., which was about was about 1/2 mile farther down the rd., just past the river, on north side of road.

these are the only marked graves i could find in the cemetery; (not kept up, but i plan to clean it up)
