    William Alexander Parker Family
    Toshes/Toler’s Ferry, Virginia.

    William Alexander Parker’s ancestors landed at the Cliffs, St. Mary’s County, Maryland, in 1635. Some of the Parkers migrated to the Baltimore and Washington, DC areas. William Alexander Parker, youngest of his family, moved to Fauquier County, Virginia. He then left Fauquier County and moved to Pittsylvania County in 1768 – to get away from the Indians and to raise tobacco. He and his wife built a home at Toshes, near Toler’s Ferry. It is believed that his wife’s name was Henrietta. Some of their children were David, Benjamin and George. It is told that William Alexander had two other sons who were killed at Braddock’s Defeat in 1755. David and Benjamin moved to Hardin County, Kentucky.
    David was there in 1820, when David’s wife accidentally used arsenic instead of soda when preparing their bread; poisoning herself, David and two of their children. Benjamin, David’s considerably older brother, became the guardian of his brother’s surviving children. Some of the Kentucky Parkers moved to Illinois, while others, during the early and mid-1800’s ventured to Texas (Fort Parker) where one of the Parker children, Cynthia Ann, nine years of age, was kidnapped during a Comanche raid in 1836. Cynthia Ann married a Comanche chief. One of her children was Quanah Parker, a well known Comanche chief, who made numerous trips to Washington, DC to negotiate on behalf of his people.

    George Parker married Frances Oaks and stayed at the home place in Pittsylvania County (Toshes). Frances Oaks is related to the Toler family – also spelled Towler. George was born in 1769 and died April 5, 1859. He and his wife are buried at the Parker/Rorer home place, Toshes.
    George and Frances had a large family. David Parker, one of their offspring, was born 1802; m. 1st Mary A. Toler (Toler’s Ferry), 1849; m. 2nd Mary Amanda Goggin, 1855; and they also lived in the same house as David’s parents, George and Frances (Oaks). It became the Parker ancestral home. Mary Goggin’s 2nd cousin was Mark Twain (Samuel L Clemens) (see Our Kin, Ackerly and Parker, Bedford County, Virginia families). Mary Goggin Parker had a brother, the Reverend Thomas C. Goggin, well known preacher in Bedford County during the 1800’s.
    Another one of George and Frances’ children was the Reverend Joseph Parker, who served a number of churches, and who was very well known and beloved during his lifetime. His farmhouse was renovated in more recent times, and is currently known as Bernard’s Landing (Smith Mountain Lake) in the Bedford, Virginia area. (Moneta). David and Mary (Goggin) Parker’s children were William (Willie) David, Penhook, Pigg River; George Stephen, Vinton, Va; Mary Emily (Emma) m. Jimmy Rorer (Emma and Jimmy Rorer established their residence at the old Parker home – in order to be with her aging and widowed mother, Mary Goggin Parker) – thus it became known as the Parker/Rorer place; and Charles (Charlie) Ross Parker, who m. Mary A. Tuck (Mary Tuck related to Glenns and Whiteheads of Pittsylvania County). Charlie and Mary lived on the Staunton River, Toshes, Virginia. The family attended Summersett Baptist Church. Alice Parker, wife of Giles Jefferson Morton was the youngest of their nine children. She lived in Pittsylvania County all her life.

    William married Henrietta Hyde Donnell in 1751 in , , Virginia, USA.     "Declaration in order to obtain benefits of the act of Congress passed June 7, 1832, State of Kentucky, County of Harden (Hardin).

    On the 19th day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty two. Personally appeared in open court before the Honorable Paul T. Booker common wealth circit Judge. Now Benjamin Parker, age 73, on the 27th of last February, who, being duly sworn according to the law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 27th, 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under named officers and served as herein stated. In the last of August, 1777, he entered as a volunteer in the county of Fauquier and state of Virginia in a body consisting of two captains: companies under the command of Colonelk Churchill and Colonel Brooks.

    "About the first of September following, he started from Fauquier County marched to Lees Fredrickstown, through Little York and through to Lancaster. Benjamin Harrison was captain of the company. He remained in Lancaster several days when we had orders to march to Philadelphia.

    "We started from Lancaster under some officers and marched on toward Philadelphia. We got to the headquarters the day after the battle was fought at Germantown where we joined the Army under the command of General Washington. Then we marched with the whole Army to White Plains where we remained till the last of November following. When we were discharged. We served three months on the first tour. He states that the first of April, 1781, he was drafted in aforesaid county and state and marched through Fredrickburg to Richmond, then down the James River to Dandridges Mill under the command of Colonel Elias Edmonds and Captain William Jennings. Then we marked back to Richmond from which we were driven by the British and we returned to the Little Woerjoine Orange County where we were joined by Generalk DeMarcus with his army. Then we returned and chased the British back to Richmond again. From Richmond we went down the James River and camped over the river and marched near to Petersburg where near four hundred of our men were taken prisoners by Colonel Tarlton company. Then we returned to Richmond and stayed there until we had served out the three months term. Where we were discharged. He received a written dischare for the first service but he has lost it. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares his name is not on the pention roll of the agency of any state or territory whatever.

    "Mr. Jack Vanmeter residing in the county of Hardin and John Smoot of the same county, both of the state of Kentucky, do hearby certify that we are acquainted with Benjamin Parker who has subscribed and sworn of the above declaration and that we blieve him to be 73 years of age that he is reputed and believes in the neighborhood where he resides, to have been a soldier of the Revolution and that we concern in that opinion. Sworn and subscribed the day and year aforesaid.

    Sarah Asberry m. Benjamin Parker

    Asberry Parker moved to Missouri. He moved to Illinois first, went back to Kentucky, went back to Illinois and finally settled in Missouri. In the 1860 Census Jackson County, Missouri on page 443:

    Joseph Henry Parker had married Mary Rhoads. Richard Rhoads is Mary's father. Hulda (Richard's wife) had already died (as the result of childbirth, her eleventh) Asberry and Mary Richardson Parker also had a baby Sarah Jane born 27 Sep 1834, and died 18 July 1838 Kentucky. Asberry is the only one of the children that Benjamin does not show up on his marriage as surity. However, Asberry shows up in the 1850 Census in Macoupin County Illinois, along with Joseph and Mary Lewis (Mary would be Asberry's sister) and John and Lydia Parker (John would be Asberry's brother and David and Susannah Parker (David would be Asberry's brother) George A Parker, the 8 year old son of Asberry in the Census above is George Asberry Parker. Mary Bird ended up in Illinois, but in Fulton County in 1850. (She would be the daughter of David Parker, Uncle to Asberry, the one that died of arsenic poison in June 1824.)     Notes:

    In 1820, David Parker moved his family from the comforts of their home in Culpepper County, Virginia to Hardin County, Kentucky. His brother, Benjamin, who was around 20 years older, had settled in Hardin County many years earlier. The following is an account of their meeting taken from George Parker’s family history written in the 1960's:

    “In 1929, I wrote to my uncle, Jesse Parker, who was born in 1849, to ask him about the family. He answered promptly telling me an interesting story that was helpful in documenting some of the family tree records and tracing it through Virginia back to England. His story told of two men meeting on a country road. One was traveling through the country by covered wagon with his family and all of his worldly possessions. The other was riding a mule and lived nearby. When they introduced themselves, they discovered that both of their names were Parker. They spent the night together; after comparing stories they found that they were brothers. The brother traveling by wagon was David; the other was Benjamin (born ca, 1759). Uncle Jesse said that this meeting reminded him of the Bible story of the meeting of David and Jonathan.”

    Various Hardin County court records help shed light on the Parker family. One county record included a bill from Jacob Van Meter, dated 11 May 1824, in which were listed:

    “3 quarts of brandy, 1 quart of brandy, 52 head of beef, 5 quarts of whisky, 1 gallon of whisky, 2 quarts of whisky, 1 quart of whisky, 1 bottle of whisky and 5 half pints.” Another bill read: “flour, salt, sharpening a plowshear, 4” (pounds) and 33 chillings (shillings)”.

    Another excerpt from George Parker’s history:

    “David and this neighbor were good friends but they would go to town, drink together and then decide to fight each other. Neither could whip the other but they would beat each other up terribly. On one such occasion they were both so badly beaten up that they could not even drive home. Friends would load them into their buggies and let the horses take them home. They were both in bed for a week. David was finally able to get up and ride in his buggy over to see the neighbor who was still in bed. They visited awhile then talked about the fight and both agreed that neither could whip the other thus deciding they would just call it a draw and never fight again and they never did.”

    "David Parker was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, in 1780. It is believed that his family attended the Summerset church. Records in the marriage bond book, page 39, show that "David Parker married Frankie Arthur Parker, April 15, 1805, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia". History records President Arthur and one of the Parkers being partners in a law firm in New York. My father, Isaac, said that his father, George, had told him that his mother, Isaac's grandmother, was related to President Arthur."

    "In 1813 David and Frankie were living in Culpepper County, Virginia, where my grandfather, George, was born. David and his family moved from Culpepper County, Virginia, to Hardin County, Kentucky, near Elizabethtown, in 1820, when George was seven years old......Four years later in June, 1824, Frankie was baking bread and mistakenly put arsenic in it instead of soda. Both David and his wife died from this poisoning; we do not know if any children died but we do know that five did not die. Because of the stories handed down the Virginia Parkers believe some children did die in this accident"

    "At this time, Benjamin was sixty-five years old and had a grown family. In spite of his age, the court appointed him guardian of David's children and administrator of his estate......"

    "The following are quotations from the Hardin County, Ky. court records: Court record #1, page 360: "Monday, July 5, 1824, Benjamin Parker was appointed administrator of David Parker's estate. On motion of Benjamin Parker and Isham Jeffries who took the oath required by law and together with Isham Ready, John Parker and John A. Stephenson, their securities entered into bond in the penalty of $2000 conditioned as the law directs the administration of the estate of David Parker, deceased. It is granted them."

    "Court Record#2: Appraisal of David Parker estate July 5, 1824, ordered that Joel A. Morrison, Noah English, John Johnson and Josiah H Yager any three of them do after being sworn before some magistrate of this county appraise the personal estate of David Parker, deceased, and make report there of to the court".

    "Court Record #3, page 3: "January 3, 1825. Inventories of the appraisement and sale of the estate of David Parker, deceased, were produced in court and ordered to be recorded."

    These records do not give the cause of death of David and his wife but letters written back to the Virginia Parkers indicate that they and some of the children died from arsenic poisoning. The five surviving children were: George, Sally, Joel, James and a son whose name we do not know that moved to Bushnell, Illinois, although it is known that he married a girl named Bird."



    David Parker, my great, great, great grandfather, and some of his family died of poison, in Kentucky. Whether the poisoning was accidental or intentional is unknown. However, here are some facts that I did gather from county court records. Shortly after the May 1824, birth of my great, great grandfather, James, arsenic was used instead of salt or baking powder in the family’s bread and four members of the family died. The older children, Joel, George, Mary, Sally and another brother survived. Perhaps because they were not home. This event was mentioned in the book, Our Kin, written by M. D. Ackerly and L. Parker in 1930 (page 650) as well as a Parker history compiled by the Virginia Parkers who met yearly for so many years.

    An entry in the Hardin County court records of a bill from William Rutherford for “making three coffins $12.00 for David Parker Family” and another a few days later for “a coffin for David Parker $5.00”

    There has been much speculation on this tragic incident. It was evidently considered an accident since there are no court records of an arrest or trial. However, Franky’s life could not have been easy – her husband taking her and their family into a wild, untamed country and being married to what was evidently a hard drinking, hard fighting man. She was not a young woman when James was born, her ninth child in 18 years – well, perhaps in a postpartum depression, she decided she just could not take any more. Or perhaps while Franky was still bedfast from giving birth, one of the younger girls made the biscuits accidentally reaching for the wrong tin. But then, why would arsenic have been kept with the food?

    Hardin County Court records are still intact and take us through the settlement of David Parker’s estate as well as confirming the approximate date of his death, and the fact that he left children not yet of legal age.

    Monday, 5 July 1824 – Benjamin Parker made guardian of David Parker’s children and administrator of his estate.
